Animal Profile

Herbie

Hello, my name is Herbie. My animal id is #243025. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/5/2025.

Herbie is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Herbie came into our care center as a stray. During his stay in our care center, it has been observed that Herbie will bang his water bowl on his kennel door and throwing his body against the walls of his kennel while the room is active. Herbie is dog reactive becoming tense, growl and hard bark when seeing other dogs. It was also observed that Herbie will bark in his kennel when the room isn't active. Herbie is social with handlers on walks and takes treats. He enjoys playing with various toys. Medically, Herbie is currently healthy at this time.

Check out what my favoirte volunteer says about me - If you're looking for a dog who is equal parts handsome, hilarious, and high-energy, Herbie is your guy! This "wild child" is a lovable tangle of long legs and puppy exuberance, and he's ready to find his forever team. He is incredibly food-motivated and already knows "sit." Volunteers note he is a quick learner who is becoming more attentive and manageable every day. Herbie is still working on his "city manners." As he can get a little vocal and "tense" when other dogs get too close, and gets excited if he gets up close to pigeons. Beneath that energetic exterior is a sweet boy who loves being petted and giving love to his human friends. My Ideal Home Herbie would do best with an experienced, calm adopter who can provide structure, consistency, and positive, force-free training. He's enthusiastic and can jump up or get grabby when excited, so he'll benefit from working on impulse control and polite greetings. A quieter home, predictable routines, and plenty of mental enrichment-like food puzzles, chews, sniffy walks, and training games-will help him settle and succeed. Other Fun Facts Herbie loves being close to his people, happily leans in for affection, and is highly food motivated-making him a great candidate for training. Herbie's absolute favorite thing in the world is a big bouncy plastic ball. He'll entertain himself (and you!) for hours with his goofy antics.

He jumps on handler and they present a treat which they hold down, he jumps down and takes the treat hard. He continues to jump on handler when walking to the elevator seeking treats, he grabs handler's treat pouch. Handler spins away from him and zips up their treat pouch. While in the elevator he follows the command to sit and handler scratches his head/ neck. He pulls hard going to the street and relieves himself once outside. He has a moderate pull and occasionally jumps on handle seeking treats. Handler has him sit and is rewarded. Once Herbie sits, is rewarded then pulls forward being bouncy, He has a moderate pull towards spots to sniff and is social with handler. He has no reaction to people walking by. Herbie is easily clipped and pulls hard back into the kennel, he readily goes back into kennel without issue. 2/10/26: Herbie is at the front of the kennel. He gets back in his kennel willingly and without incident. 01/18/26: Herbie is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he is easily leashed with treats as a distraction and taken to the street for his walk. With the first gate greet, Herbie presents a tense body and low growls at the dog. After the first dog leaves, Herbie presents a loose body and runs around. He jumps on the second handler present, high enough to almost touch their face. They also jump on the first handler and nudge their treat pouch. A second dog is brought in for the gate greet. Again, Herbie presents a tense body and growls at the dog. (Please refer to Dog-Dog notes). The handler clips their leash and returns Herbie to kennel. 12/15/25: When a staff member walked up to Herbie's kennel he was facing away from the kennel door barking. Date of intake:: 12/5/2025

Summary:: Whining and scratching crate door, friendly when leashed, fearful of dogs barking

Date of initial:: 12/5/2025

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Herbie so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)

Recommendations comments:: No Young Children: Due to Herbie's fearful demeanor paired with his exuberance and lack of impulse control, we recommend a home with no young children.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: During his assessment, Herbie was observed to jump exuberantly on handlers and table surf. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Fearful: During his intake it was reported that Herbie was fearful when entering the dog kennel room and needed to be ran into kennel on a double leash. It is important to always go slow and give Herbie the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Herbie would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: During his assessment, Herbie entered the behavior office whining and crying, he was also reported to whine on walks when seeing dogs outside. We recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
