Beauregarde
Hello, my name is Beauregarde. My animal id is #242421. I am a male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 11/25/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormBeauregard is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Beauregard arrived as a stray with no known history. Initially noted to be fearful, Beauregard warmed up to staff at the Care Center, becoming social and treat motivated. Recently. Beauregard has been showing increasingly poor impulse control and signs of decreasing threshold for arousal. During walks Beauregard has been reported to frequently jump on handlers, mouthing hands, arms, and clothing of handlers with light pressure. Although he is able to be redirected with treats and squeaker sounds, he is often resumes jumping on handlers. Beauregard understands basic commands such as 'sit' and continues to be highly social with familiar staff. Medically, Beauregard is noted to have CIRDC but is otherwise apparently healthy.

Beauregarde arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. Initially when he arrived Beau was obsvered to be highly fearful. Noted to growl and lunge towards handlers with a tense body and tucked tail. Overtime Beau has been noted to warm up to handlers and have a loose and wiggly body. However, recently Beau has been obsvered to have a low threshold for arousal. Noted to jump up on handlers and mouth their arms. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only home. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary:: 12/13/25: Beauregarde greets another dog at the gate with a loose and wiggly body. He will disengage and seek handler attention before returning to the gate and sitting, soft body and wagging tail. Off leash, he remains soft and is tolerant of another dog who attempts to mount him.
Summary (2):: 12/24/25: Beauregarde is at the front with a very wiggly body and submissive grin. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. In the hallway, Beuaregarde presents a wiggly body to a familiar handler; they toss a treat on the ground and he eats it. Once outside, Beuaregarde attempts to jump on the handler a few times, but the handler turns their body away. The handler then gives him a toy; he repeatedly picks it up and drops it. After dropping the toy, Beauregarde mouths the handler's hand with some pressure. Continuing the walk, Beauregarde walks ahead with leash tension, pulling hard. He stops to relieve himself. He then jumps on the handler and mouth their hand repeatedly with light pressure. He does this a few more times. Walking back to the shelter, Beauregarde pulls much harder while walking in a zig-zag pattern. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Beauregarde to his kennel.
Summary (3):: 12/22/25: Beauregard is at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. He was easily leashed however once the leash tightens he begins to thrash and vocalize. The handler gives him a moment before taking him to the yard. In the yard, Beau mouths the handlers hands with mild pressure often. He also jumps up on the handler frequently. During one instance Beau jumps up and almost knocks the handler over. Other times he jumps up on the handler and wraps his paws around the handlers arm. When returning to kennel Beau is easily clipped and returned to kennel with no further issue. 12/21/25: Beauregarde is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he displays a loose wiggly body and taps his front paws as he is leashed. He is distracted with a treat and leashed before pulling hard out of kennel to the street. Outside Beauregarde continues to pull hard and will pull toward garbage on the floor and will sometimes jump up on handler but when asked to sit will listen and accept treats from handler. He is very exuberant and stops in front of handler frequently to solicit more treats, after walking for a while he is brought back inside and pulls hard while returning. 12/20/25: Beauregarde is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He approaches with a loose and wiggly body and wagging tail, he is leashed while distracted with a treat and walks with handler out to the street. Beauregarde pulls hard out of kennel and to the street, outside he slows to a more moderate pull but when pulling toward areas of interest or trash on the street he pulls hard toward it. He attempts to pick up food items off the floor, and will socially jump on handler occasionally but will sit when told to and waits eagerly for treats. He walks with handler for a while before being brought back inside, he pulls hard coming back in but returns to kennel without issue
Summary (4):: 12/19/25 (for PM walk): Beauregarde is sitting in kennel quietly as handler approaches. As kennel door is unlocked, Beauregarde is sitting but becomes wiggly and displays a submissive grin. He is easily leashed and exits kennel with moderate pulling. In hallway he is easily clipped to harness. On sidewalk Beauregarde is loose bodied, sits for treats and takes gently from hand. Beauregarde sees two LMBs on sidewalk, each time Beauregarde pulls toward, but is easily cued into a sit position with a treat. Beauregarde remains in seated position while the LMBs pass by, takes treats gently and recovers to walking with loose body. Beauregarde allows petting with loose body, is easily walked back to kennel without issue. 12/19/25: Beauregarde is laying at the back but comes forward loose wiggly body. He is easily leashed and removed from kennel. He steps out into the yard then quickly turns around to come back into the building due to rain. He is coaxed forward and brought to a pen with a cover. He is loose and wiggly with handler sitting close and accepting treats. He allows petting and is easily returned to kennel. 12/18/25: Beauregarde is lying down in kennel and then stands up with a wiggly body and submissive grin. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. Before exiting, Beauregarde turns around and jumps on the handler with a loose body, placing his paws on their chest; he allows pets from them. The handler then backs away and he jumps down. Once outside, Beauregarde jumps on the handler and lightly mouths their hand and arm. They clip their leash to his harness. During the walk, Beauregarde walks ahead with mild tension; he stops to relieve himself. He occasionally turn and sit in front of the handler to either jump on them or receive treats. Before crossing the street, Beauregarde spots a large dog across the street; he stares at them with a neutral body as they walk past, but he is redirectable as the handler calls his name and he looks at him. While crossing the street, Beauregarde begins to pull hard. He keeps the same leash tension when crossing back. When nearing the shelter, Beauregarde sees a volunteer and staff member across the street. A passerby speaks to him, and he presents a wiggly body. As the volunteer approaches, Beauregarde presents a neutral body; once they speak to him, Beauregarde presents a wiggly body. He sits on the volunteer's command and takes treats softly. He also attempts to jump on them but they back away. Beauregarde jumps on the handler twice more. Upon entry, the handler walks Beauregarde to kennel and unclips their leash with ease
Summary (5):: 12/17/25: Staff called for assistance by K9 Behavior. Beauregarde was reported to be jumping up towards the handler and mouthing their sleeves. He began to jump up on them initially and treats were offered to redirect. Beauregarde then began to jump towards their hands and mouth their arms. K9 behavior arrived as he was jumping up and grabbing the staff's arm. He was redirected with a squeaker and was double leashed with another K9 Behavior team member back into the building. He pulls hard but was able to be returned to kennel without issue. 12/15/25: Beauregarde is being walked in the driveway and he approaches the handler with a loose and wiggly body. The handler begins to pet Beau, he then jumps up and begins to mouth the handlers arms with moderate pressure. The handler who is holding the leash is able to pull him away and the interaction is ended. 12/13/25 (for playgroup): Beauregarde is at the front of his kennel with a wiggly body and submissive grin. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. During the elevator ride, Beauregarde receives pets from the handler. He is then brought to the play yard. There, he greets the second handler, maintaining a wiggly body and receiving pets from them. After the first dog-dog interaction, the handler places Beauregarde on the drag leash. He runs around, and jumps on both handlers with loose body. He sits without command and takes treats softly. Another two dogs are brought for interactions (please read dog-dog notes for a summary all interactions had). After the interactions, Beauregarde continues to interact with the handler with the same behaviors. After a few minutes, the handler switches their leash and brings Beauregarde inside. They clip their leash and return Beauregarde easily to kennel
Summary (6):: 12/9/25: Beauregarde is reported on whiteboard to be very friendly, gentle, and have great leash manners. 12/6/25: Beauregarde is at the front with a wiggly body and submissive grin. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. Beauregarde walks ahead with little to no leash tension. He shows slight interest with passersby; he would turn his head when people walk behind him. He also does not display dog reactivity; he sees a dog, but is easily redirectable when the handler calls him. Throughout the walk, Beauregarde presents a wiggly body. He also allows pets and takes treats softly. 11/28/25: Beauregarde is sitting at the front of his kennel loose body. As handler speaks to him he is wiggly while submissive grinning. He is easily leashed and removed from kennel. He is walked on the street where he walks ahead of handler sniffing around, slight pulls on leash. He approaches the second handler with a soft body and low wagging tail and accepts petting along the side and neck, leaning in. A little later the second handler reaches over his head and he flinches while lowering his body. He is easily returned to kennel. 11/27/25: Prior to the walk, the handler approaches Beauregarde while he's in kennel. Initially, he low growls while lying down, but when the handler speaks to him, Beauregarde stands up and presents a wiggly body and wagging tail. The handler approaches, and Beauregarde maintains a soft body. When leashing, Beauregarde jumps around in kennel, but once he's at the kennel door, the handler leashes him, and brings him out the room. He relieves himself before exiting the building. Once outside, Beauregarde sees another dog, but doesn't react. On the street, Beauregarde walks ahead with no leash tension, occasionally stops walking to sniff around and relieve himself a few more times. He then pulls forward, and walks in a zig-zag pattern. Beauregarde pulls hard for the remainder of the walk. Upon entering, the handler clips their leash and returns Beauregarde to his kennel with ease
Summary (7):: 11/26/25: Beauregarde is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body. The handler gives him a high value treat before leashing. They also use it as a lure to leash him. Beauregarde is then brought to the yard, where he relieves himself. He walks around the yard, until the handler sits down ; a second handler is also present and sits down. Beauregarde approaches the second handler and allows pets from them; he presents a soft body, and sits down while being petted. He also allows pets from the first handler at the same time. Both handlers give him treats, which he takes. Upon return, the handler clips their leash and brings him to kennel. At first, Beauregarde doesn't enter on his own, but after tossing treats in kennel, he goes in with ease. 11/26/25: Beauregarde is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body and a low wagging tail. The handler presents treats, and Beauregarde sniffs them, but he either spits them out or shows no interest. Then the handler shows a high value treat, which he takes softly. A second handler begins to feed the high values as the first handler unlocks the kennel and attempts to leash. Once the first handler gets their leash inside, Beauregarde stops taking treats. He then stares at the second handler with a tense body and low growls. When the first handler moves their leash away, Beauregarde begins to take treats again. When the handler attempts to leash him again, Beauregarde slowly retreats to the back of his kennel. Both handlers then use a squeaker, which he tilts his head to the sound of, but doesn't approach the front. As the second handler backs away from the kennel, Beauregarde slowly comes to the front. After a few attempts, the first handler is able to lasso their leash on Beauregarde and bring him out the room. Beauregarde immediately relieves himself once in the yard, and does so several times while in the pen. He also sniffs around. When seeing another dog in the adjacent pen, Beauregarde turns himself away; he shows slight interest in the second handler by sniffing them. Initially, Beauregarde show no interest to the high values, but then he sniffs the bag and takes the treats given by the first handler. He also follows the 'sit' command given by the first handler. As another dog is walked past the pen, Beauregarde watches them with a neutral body until they're out of sight. The first handler clips their leash and brings Beauregarde inside. Upon returning to kennel, Beauregarde refuses to enter; he walks past it and doesn't enter even as the handler attempts to muscle him in. Both handler toss low and high value treats into his kennel, but he shows no interest. Both handlers then muscle him in together, and the first handler is able to remove their leash.
Date of intake:: 11/25/2025
Summary:: Tucked tail, low head and growling, lip licks when offered treats, stares at handlers
Date of initial:: 11/25/2025
Summary:: Growling and lunging, given Trazodone & Gabapentin, tolerates handling/muzzling, baulks returning
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Beauregarde so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Beauregarde's fearful demeanor and need for contact on his own terms paired with his size and strength as well as his potential for defensive aggression, we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression: Beauregarde has been reported to display fearful tendencies in care, and has escalated to defensive aggression. He will display a tense body upon approach with a tucked tail and has growled/lunged at staff when especially frightened. Beauregarde should never be forced to interact, he should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people he finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Beauregarde. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Beauregarde's quality of life. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Strength/Leash Pulling: Beauregarde has been observed on walks to pull hard and can be difficult to redirect when he begins pulling. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Arousal: Beauregarde has been obsvered to quickly become over aroused and begin jumping up and mouthing handlers arms. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Beauregarde to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
