Animal Profile

Bailey

Hello, my name is Bailey. My animal id is #152660. I am a desexed female torbie cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 5 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 2/2/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Bailey is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically, Bailey is healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Medically, Bailey is healthy. A volunteer writes: Bailey is our new bubble theater director. Sitting down to watch and share notes on bubble shows with her treats close at paw, Bailey's open minded and has a few things she likes and a lot she's good at. Along with watching bubbles, she likes treats. Bailey even likes them enough to come out of her den and up to the front where we patiently wait to build a friendship with her. Yes, Bailey usually often chooses to bide her time until we leave to enjoy her snacks, but everyday is a new chance for us to try and she's encouraged us to get creative like her, especially since she hasn't been very interested in the standard pets or neck scritches. Though we're slowly learning and trying more, I don't know the Care Center will make it to her likes list. Bailey's been with us before and isn't thrilled to be back, but is hopeful for another chance. She's hoping that chance will be with you.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/7/22 Hiding in den, when i approach she begins to low growl. She hisses when scratcher tool is introduced with dry treats but when they are dropped in front of her she sniffs them and does not eat them. Chicken is also offered and she hisses again before sniffing it when it is dropped in front of den door. She continues to low growl throughout interaction. 9/12/22 Sitting on top of den with a relaxed body and face. When I offer her squeeze ups on scratcher tool she begins to lean in and rub against the tool ignoring the treat. There is some huffing and puffing as she rubs along the tool but otherwise she remains relaxed. As the interaction progresses, she eats puree treat and rubs along scratcher tool again with her tail high and vibrating. When the door is closed she begins to grumble. 9/13/22 Hunched on den, body and face tense. She grumbles and growls when I lift the cage cover and although she chases and sniffs each treat offered she does not commit fully to eating them during our interaction. She is sometimes more curious of interaction but today she might be feeling stressed due to there being a lot of movements in the room at this time. I leave her some scent enrichment, speak to her softly and end the session. 9/14/22 At the front scratching on in her litter box, initially shows alert eyes and neutral face and body- when cover is lifted again she begins to hiss and low growl/ grumbles loudly. She jumps back up on top of her den and I offer her squeeze ups on a scratcher through the door. She leans down while grumbling and begins to eat the treat while still grumbling. Very wary of fast movements as well, and swats at tool when it is slowly pull back out of the cage. 9/20/22 Standing on top of cat den today, back arched, ears forward and tail raised as she watches me with an alert expression. I try clicker training today but she shows no interest in the treats. I use the scratcher tool to pet her and she leans in with energy while swirling her tail around and rubbing her cheeks all over the scratcher. She is appreciative of petting but appears to have a high energy level with the potential to become overstimulated. Was sweet today, but I did not actively try to test her tolerance. Will continue to monitor. 9/21/22 Comes to the front and vocalizes when I approach with ears forward and neutral body with a low tail. She follows me over to the other side of her double with a high tail and alert eyes and continues to vocalize. When I introduce the scratcher tool she beings to lean in and rub her cheeks against it and I opt to leave it in place for a second to let her rub against it. She is appreciative of petting but exhibits the same high energy level as yesterday. She allows me to then pet her body with her ears slightly turned to the side and her tail alternating between up high and rainbow. She will turn her head quickly to look at the tool but then just rub her cheeks along it. Continued in GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Noted by behavior team during her previous stay to display signs of overstimulation after short interactions: tail swishing, fur rippling, turning to look at scratcher tool while being pet. Noted to have a previous bite/scratch with with both a person and another animal, further details on these incidents were not provided. Incident with the person happened on 12/18/24 and with the other animal was on 11/8/24. She is noted to dislike dogs and to hiss and both dogs and cats. Bailey is showing consistent signs of overstimulation at this time. They do not need socialization, these behaviors are likely to continue in a home environment and this is not an indication that this cat is under socialized. They are a cat who may be sensitive to physical or environmental stimuli. They will benefit from plenty of non-contact, interactive playtime and mental stimulation in their new home. Adopters/Rescues should be counselled on respecting their new pet's boundaries and educated on warning signs of overstimulation in order for them to be able to identify when Bailey is beginning to reach her threshold for pets and the interaction can be ended before escalation occurs. The Feline Behavior Team would recommend that Bailey continues on gabapentin once she leaves the shelter and future adopters/rescues discuss gabapentin/behavior medication with their personal vets as an option.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Single-pet home,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: She is noted to hiss at both dogs and cats and is noted specifically to dislike dogs. she has a previous bite/scratch with limited details to another animal that occurred on 11/8/24. Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Bailey would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Bailey was hiding in her cate den as the assessor approached, body and head completely hidden from view. Bailey did not respond when spoken to or as the kennel door opened. Bailey tolerated petting from within her den with the assessor's hand while remaining still, tense and hidden. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 02/05/25 Upon returning to the shelter, Bailey is sitting on her shelf with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. When the scratcher tool is introduced through the food slot, she tenses even more and hisses as she pulls back from the tool with a low body. She begins to low growl and continues to hiss as she raises a paw and swats at the tool as she avoids touch. When the assessor is able to pet along her side with the tool 1-2 times, she turns quickly to look at the tool and hisses loudly before she turns and runs into the den. When the assessor uses the Asses-A-Hand and slowly offers it out, holding it near the entrance to the den, she again hisses and low growls. When the hand is just barely introduced into the den, she begins to yowl and swats at the tool repeatedly. The interaction is ended to prevent her from continuing to yowl and to limit FAS. Pick up is not attempted. Bailey is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He/she has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. She may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
