Other Notes:: Papa was attacked by a dog in the past, this is why he is easily triggered by unfamiliar dogs. He is used to at least 3 walks a day. Papa is very affectionate with his family. He enjoys quality time and is very intelligent. He knows commands "sit, paw, stay, and leave it". He is not picky and will eat most food/treats. Papa allows all handling and is very outgoing, he loves car rides and long days at the park. 8/2/26: Papa redirected onto an ACS as a result of kennel fighting when being returned to his kennel. He bit their leg but the bite did not break skin or draw blood.

Summary:: According to Papa's previous owner(s), he does not get along with other new dogs. He is reported to lunge and hard bark while on walks but is known to be easily redirected. 07/25/26 Papa is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He approaches the gate with a slightly tense frame and will raise his paw as he stares at the female through the gate. Papa becomes increasingly tense and will bark before walking away, but when reapproaching remains tense.

Summary (7):: 8/6/26: Papa is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose body as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he would pull ahead and pull towards trees and towards the fence to sniff and mark his territory. He is comfortable approaching the handler to receive treats and is comfortable receiving a few pets. He has no reactions to dogs or people nearby. He begins to pull hard on the way back to the building and attempts to pull towards the dogs in the kennel room that he used to be in. He is able to be quickly walked past that room and then returned back to his kennel with no issues. 8/3/26 (AM): Papa is barking at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be distracted with treats and is able to be quickly leashed when he quickly attempts to try to bite at the leash. Once leashed, he then launches out of kennel and then muzzle punches the kennel door with a tense body while vocalizing towards the dog in kennel next to him. He is able to be quickly taken out out of the room and he is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, he instantly relieves himself and is able to shake off. He is comfortable exploring around and would take a few treats from the handler. He would then constantly approach the door to seek exit. He pulls hard while exiting the room and is then taken and placed into his kennel with no issues. 08/02/26: An ACS reported Papa kennel fighting intensely with the dog next to him while returning. When the handler attempted to move him away from the door, Papa turned around and redirected on the handler's leg. The ACS also reported that Papa digs at the corner of his kennel towards the one select dog he kennel-fights with. No skin was broken and a Behaviour Walks tag was placed. 7/25/26 (playgroup): Papa is at the front of the kennel barking as the handle approaches. He is leashed with ease and brought out to the play yard for a gate greet. He is tense and will bark during the greeting. He is returned to kennel with no issue. (see dog-dog for more information) 07/15/26(BA Note): Papa is lying at the front of his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is brought to the assessment room, where he eats treats while allowing the handlers to place a collar and drag leash on him. Papa allows all handling and completes the run portion without becoming aroused. He does not respond to the knock stimulus. During the toy portion, he sniffs the toy before disengaging and walking away. For more information, see Behavioral Assessment.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Papa is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Papa has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that he should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Papa associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the concerns observed in the previous home and during his stay in care, we recommmend for Papa to be placed with a new hope partner.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Papa has been fearful at the care center. It is important always to go slow and give him the option to walk away from any social interaction. Papa should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Papa's choice to approach a new person or thing. Papa would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Papa is reported to hard bark and lunge at unfamiliar dogs on walks, but his owner reported that he is easily redirected. He may need positive reinforcement and reward-based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Bite History (human): Papa bit a staff member due to redirecting due to kennel fighting with a neighboring dog. The bite did not break skin or draw blood.
