Animal Profile

Silver

Hello, my name is Silver. My animal id is #229771. I am a desexed female gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 13 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 7/22/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.

Silver is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. She is an elderly cat that, unfortunately, has contracted a viral infection in the shelter. She has stopped eating and is losing weight. She needs care and attention that we cannot provide.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Silver is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. She is an elderly cat that, unfortunately, has contracted a viral infection in the shelter. She has stopped eating and is losing weight. She needs care and attention that we cannot provide. What my friends at ACC say about me: I lived with children in my previous home. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I have lived with cats in my previous home. I have lived with dogs in my previous home. I have been known to shower my favorite people in love! I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. My adoption fee is waived! A volunteer writes: Silver isn't really sure what to make of the Care Center, but I really appreciate how she tries. She hopped up from her nap in a sparkly burst to say hello and walked herself right onto my lap. Cuddling for a moment, Silver suddenly realized that she actually didn't want to be on my lap at all. The shelter is big and, combined with all of the recent changes Silver's been through recently, can really make it quite confusing. Silver was brought to us with another cat when their guardian passed away and is hoping to find another chance with you.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 7/26/25 Vol. Was on top of den when approached and came to front. Offered squeeze up on scratcher tool. Ate a little bit. Allowed petting, leaned into cheek rubs. Ate a little bit of her food. Allowed petting but then meowed once. Continued eating wet food. Started to go into den and came back to front. Allowed petting through bars. Tossed in dry treats. Ignored. 7/30/25 Vol. Silver was sitting at front of kennel, pawing at kennel door. Her body was loose, with tail spread out behind her. She immediately head bunted and gently leaned into cheek rubs while purring. After a minute or so, she pulled back, gave a distressed meow, and raised her paw in warning. After giving her space for a few moments, she relaxed. She ignored treats and again solicited attention. She leaned into cheek rubs with scratcher tool for another minute, then stress meowed again and weakly swatted at the tool. Overall she was sweet but seemed to become overstimulated quickly, or possibly a spot that caused pain when touched. 8/1/25 Vol. In front of cage, relaxed, paws tucked, eyes normal. Came over to sniff as I was reading report. Opened door to put in treat bowl and Silver came forward to sniff and ignore - allowed a head pet with hand and then pulled back with a soft meow. She came forward again for pets until ducked her head and pulled back. Came forward again for pets, purring - then pulled back tail twitching a little to sit down, paws tucked watching. Ended interaction. 8/3/25 Vol. Curled up sleeping in cubby, facing backwards. Woke when spoken to and immediately turned around and came forward. Sniffed treats, but didn't eat, sneezing repeatedly. Allowed head scratches then leaned in, purring. Continued to enjoy attention for 5 minutes.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: No young children under 13 years old due to fearfulness; however, reported to be Friendly & Outgoing, plays gently with children in the previous home. Counselor discretion is advised.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Silver was hiding in the den curled up with her rear at the front of the den and her head at the back, turned around and facing forward when removing the den cover. When reaching close to offer treats on the scratcher tool, she softly hisses and begins to growl. When pet on the head, cheeks, and body, she whines and continues to hiss and growl. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. Silver tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
