Animal Profile

Luna

Hello, my name is Luna. My animal id is #251209. I am a female tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/3/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Luna is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful/stressed cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: Luna is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat and scratch and is very fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. She was owner surrendered but other than saying she is aggressive the former owner gave us no additional information. A volunteer writes: We're determined to meet Luna halfway as working through the shelter days stretching before her seems to be written all across her face. She could be charmingly indifferent to our efforts, but it could also be that we haven't quite been able to catch her interest just yet. We don't really have much to go by as Luna was abandoned in the shelter vestibule with no information. Loafing on top of her den, she may be considering the stream of variables or perhaps her current and unenviable job of telling us everything about who she is now. It's a big job and we'd love to be helpful, but each time we've tried to get started on the right foot with her, we've promptly been told it isn't the right time. I imagine her sighing to herself as she returns to her thoughts. Luna may not be sure how to ask for the second chance she needs, which may be where meeting her halfway comes in, because we're asking you to please give her one.

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

KNOWN HISTORY:: Luna was brought in without information on her behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/7/26 Luna was resting on top of the den and initially appeared alert but calm. When approached and spoken to softly, she became defensive leaning forward, hissing, and swatting the air. The interaction was ended, and calming measures were taken, including placing a Feliway-sprayed felt square and adding a privacy cover to her second kennel to help her acclimate. 4/11/26 She was observed resting on top while watching. She slowly retreated from the scratcher tool, then began to low growl and quickly struck while avoiding contact. The interaction was ended, and dried treats were offered, which she slowly ate with caution. 4/14/26 She sat upright at the front, calmly observing the room. When offered treats, she accepted them without escalating and stayed focused on her surroundings. However, when petting was attempted with the scratcher tool, she quickly retreated and hissed, showing discomfort. The interaction ended with additional treats to help build a more positive association with the human. 4/18/26 By the front seems under the weather sniffling. She continues to avoid contact and bats at the scratcher tool. Curious with the laser pointer watching it while eating treats.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Luna was on top of the den, appearing fearful with large pupils and an alert face. She was unresponsive when spoken to but sniffed treats out of the treat bag, and continued to do intermittent hissing when presented with the treats. When petting was attempted with a scratcher tool, she pulled back significantly and then started swatting the tool hard. After the kennel door was shut, and when the kennel card was being put back in place, she attempted swatting and partial lunging. Luna is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat and scratch and is very fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling.
