Pre-Screener Form

Bleu is at risk due to his behavior concerns. In the kennel environment, he frequently hard barks, fixates on other dogs. He has been reluctant to be leashed and avoidant of touch, requiring handlers to use food distraction to manage him safely. During his reassessment, Bleu gripped the assessment tool, readjusted his bite, and escalated to jumping and leash-biting.While he has shown improvement with training sessions and has shown social behavior with familair handlers. Medically, Bleu is Apparently Healthy.

In the care center in lower-stress settings, he has shown the ability to engage in training games such as LATTE and 123, readily participating and taking treats softly. He has also demonstrated success in engage/disengage exercises with other dogs, showing that with space and food motivation he can relax and redirect. Bleu enjoys enrichment items like tennis balls, will trade readily, and leans into handler contact when comfortable. However, Bleu is sensitive to handling and has shown avoidance of touch and collaring with selective handlers. Bleu has shown and increase in resouce guarding behavior, which was displayed during one of his reassessments where Bleu gripped the assessment tool, readjusted his bite, and escalated to jumping and leash-biting. While he has shown improvement with training sessions and can succeed in structured environments. Will need placement with a New Hope partner that can provide experienced handling, a structured decompression plan, and continued positive reinforcement training.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Bleu is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. No cats: In the prior home Bleu is noted to lunge at cats we reccomend he is placed in a home with not cats. Place with a New Hope partner: Bleu has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and during his reassessment, Bamboo began he Quickly grips the dummy's hand arm when the hand touches the plush toy. Bleu bites his way up and readjusts his bite. The Helper is about to regain his focus which he begins to jump up on the lead and the helper has to stiff-arm the lead. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based).

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal,Other

Potential challenges comments:: Low threshold for arousal/Resource guarding:In Bleu’s previous home, he was noted to guard food; however, the owners reported that he never attempted to touch or take valuable items such as food. During Bleu reassessment he Quickly grips the dummy's hand arm when the hand touches the plush toy. Bleu bites his way up and readjusts bite. The Helper is about to regain his focus which he begins to jump up on the lead and the helper has to stiff-arm the lead. Fearful: In the prior home Bleu is noted to become fearful when startled. Bleu/Bamboo has been highly fearful and avoidant of interaction during attempts to conduct his assessment and during his stay in care. It is important to always go slow and give him the option to walk away from any social interaction. Bleu/Bamboo should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Bleu/Bamboo’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Bleu/ Bamboo would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see the handout on the Decompression Period. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Bleu/Bamboo is noted in care to bark at kennels and kennel fight. Inn the prior home it is noted that Bleu will alert bark at dogs and will lunge at cats. Other: In the prior home it is noted that Bleu was bitten by a off leash dog in 8/6/2024.
