Animal Profile

Ms Colorado

Hello, my name is Ms Colorado. My animal id is #234194. I am a female gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 8/12/2025.

Ms Colorado is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Ms Colorado has not been acclimating well to the care center environment, and has began to rebound off her kennel walls and spin throughout the day. Ms Colorado is social with staff, but struggling to acclimate to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Medically, Ms Colorado is currently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I have been known to shower my favorite people in love! A volunteer writes: A moment that felt like Hozier's yell was meeting Ms Colorado. If you think I'm being hyperbolic it's only because you haven't met her yet! When I walked up to her kennel she followed me to the other side, curious and hopeful. I'm not sure if she wanted food to fill her emaciated 40lb frame, or reprieve from her kennel, but she got both. She waddled right out and I could see how thin her body was, and how sparse her coat. None of this stopped her from being the absolutely most delightful little creature. She propped right up on my lap and ate her treats eagerly but nicely. She was thrilled to try some peanut butter and stored some on her chin to eat later. Our little Ms Colorado could use some TLC and time away from the shelter. She's available to most homes, with the exception of one with kids under 5. Her dog to dog notes will be pinned in our Instagram comments. You can meet Ms Colorado by visiting the Queens ACC.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 08/13/25 Colorado is introduced at the gate to a male helper dog while off leash at the care center. Colorado will approach the gate, displaying a tense body and high stiff tail. The male helper dog is exuberant, standing on the gate with a loose, wiggly body and Colorado walks away to seek attention from one of the handlers present. This concludes the interaction.

Summary (7):: 09/15/25 Colorado is standing in front of their kennel door with a wagging tail. The handler will toss her treats and clip her harness before proceeding outside for a walk. Colorado walks with a toy in her mouth, maintaining it through out her walk. Colorado displays a neutral frame while trotting neutrally alongside the handler. Colorado will maintain her relaxed pace throughout the walk and little to no leash pressure is applied. Colorado relieves herself and will proceed to the facility. Colorado will pull towards other dogs are her way back to the facility, remaining still and maintaining the toy in her mouth. Colorado will enter the building as well as her kennel with no issue. 9/3: As a handler is setting up musical enrichment, they see Ms Colorado rebouncing and spinning off her kennel door while panting heavily. She pauses and stays standing on the kennel door when the handler approaches and jumps down for treats. 09/02/25 (Trainer Note): Ms Colorado is pacing back and forth at the front of her kennel as the handler approaches. The handler notes that her kennel is smeared with feces, particularly the front by the door. Ms Colorado is easily leashed and pulls hard outside, becoming faint and falling after just a few seconds. The handler walks her carefully to the canine training room. She allows the handler to place and fit a harness while another handler feeds her spray cheese. She engages readily with the various enrichment items, spending longer on each as time progresses and starting to orient towards the handler. She moves away from the enrichment to explore the room with a softened body, slower pace, and decreased pant. She is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 08/29/25: ACS Staff report that Ms Colorado is spinning in kennel. 08/26/25Colorado is at the front of her kennel with a soft frame, remaining present as the handler leashes her. Colorado maintains her soft frame as she trots alongside the handler. She is taken to the play yard where she will engage with a ball and play fetch with the handler. She is highly treat motivated, being rewarded when she returns the ball. Colorado will begin to fatigue from constant motion and is returned to the facility, entering the building as well as her kennel with no issue. 8/13/25: Ms Colorado is standing at the front of her kennel and will push her head through as the handler leashes her. She is brought out to the yard to meet a playmate. Once inside, she allows the handler to call her over and place a drag leash on her. Ms Colorado then walks to the greeting gate for a nose-to-nose greeting with her playmate, slowly stiffening, raising a high tail, and displaying lip licks. She then walks off and begins displacement sniffing around the yard. Ms Colorado is brought back to her kennel safely with no issues.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 1

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): we reccomend Ms Colorado is placed in a home with no young children under 5.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Ms Colorado jumps up non-stop, indicating a need for training to improve her impulse control and basic manners. Consistent training to teach her to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: During the assessment treats are tossed due to her taking treats roughly. Teaching her to take treats gently by rewarding calm behavior and using a clicker or marker word can help. Please see handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
