Date of assessment:: 3/15/2026

Summary:: Beauty has been observed to be highly fearful while in care. Noted to growl, bare teeth, and lunge towards handlers when they appraoach. Due to the high level of fear, stress, and anxiety Beauty is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: 3/22/26- Beauty gate greets another dog with a tense body with a high wagging tail going back and forth at the fence while whining.

Summary (5):: 3/17/26: Beauty is at the front, soft bodied. She is not interested in treats but easily leashed without them. She is walked in the yard where she is aloof, marking and looking out the back gate, not sniffing around. When returning to kennel, she baulks but with slight pressure on the leash and jogging in, she returns to kennel without issue. 3/16/26: Beauty is standing at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. The handler is easily able to leash her and she is taken to the yard. Beauty relieves herself quickly. When seeing another dog Beauty will pull hard towards them, this behavior is not easily redirected. When returning to kennel, the handler is easily able to clip their leash. In front of the kennel room Beauty begins to balk and thrash while on leash. The handler attempts to coax her forward however Beauty continues to walk backward and thrash. The handler uses leash pressure and is able to get her to walk forward and back into kennel. 3/14/26: Beauty is lying down in the middle of her kennel as the handler approaches. She looks up and slowly begins to growl. The handler tosses treats and she growls more. Beauty gets up and growls with an open mouth. The handler opens the kennel door and she ceases growling, but remains tense. She tries to push out the door with her head, and is moderately difficult to leash. Once leashed, she remains tense but follows the handler to the yard. She relieves herself and walks around slowly. She does not engage with the handler. She does not take treats. She jumps up on the bench repeatedly. She is lead back to her kennel and balks at the kennel room door. She eventually is jogged in and gets in her kennel. The handler offers her a treat again and she begins growling again. The handler leaves.

Summary (6):: 03/14/26: Beauty is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches, she is saying down but stands as handler unlocks the kennel door. She presses her head against the kennel door softly and allows leashing. She is walked out to the street where she is hypervigilant and walks with handler stopping frequently and pulling mildly. When seeing people she becomes a bit tense and will stare at them from afar and will baulk occasionally until they pass. Beauty is taken on a long walk and continues to turn around at certain points in the walk to look behind her. She is walked for a while before being brought back inside, she is brought to the behavior office while her kennel is being cleaned. Inside she greets handler and solicits social interaction, allowing petting from handler. She leans deeply into handler and lays her head on handlers lap, she approaches other staff in the room and allows petting but at one point she approaches a staff member she offers her a treat and she responds by low growling. She is kept near handler and continues to solicit social interaction, eventually she is brought back to kennel and baulks slightly outside the kennel. She is muscled in with mild leash pressure. 3/13/26: Beauty stands up with a neutral body, barking and growling at the handler. They drop a treat inside of her kennel, but instead of eating it, he growls louder and bares teeth. The handler opens the kennel door to leash her; Beauty then headbutts the kennel door a few times. After a few attempts, the handler is able to lasso Beauty and bring her out the room. They bring her to the yard; there, Beauty runs around and relieves herself. She notices a dog being walked past the pen; at first, Beauty doesn't mind, but then she continually looks at the dog (who doesn't notice her) and whines. She pulls towards the shared fence and climb up on the bench to look over. beauty also lean her body against the handler's. The handler then clips their leash and brings Beauty inside into the office. There, she attempts to pull towards the office door; she also alerts barks (boofs) at an unfamiliar K9 handler. Beauty also jumps on the handler as they're seated and allows pets. As an ACS knocks on the door and peaks their head inside, beauty har barks and attempts to lunge at them; the handler shortens the leash an waits for beauty to settle down, before exiting the room with her. The handler is able to return Beauty and remove their leash with ease.

Summary (7):: 03/12/26 (PM): Beauty is laying at the center of her kennel as handler approaches. As handler unlocks the kennel door she begins alert barking toward handler, once the door opens she becomes more tense and lunges forward. As she jumps forward handler lassoes the leash over her head, coming close to making contact with handlers hand in the process. Once leashed she is leashed she cowers for a moment before handler opens the door, she exits kennel and walks out with handler pulling moderately along the way. Beauty stops to sniff spots on the street and walks forward with her ears pinned back. She becomes slightly tense when passing people and will sometimes pull towards passing people in an attempt to sniff them. After a bit she is brought back inside and handler carefully clips her leash. She returns to kennel with moderate leash pressure. 3/12/26: Beauty is laying in the middle of the kennel with a tense body and whale eye when the handler approaches. As the handler is unlocking the kennel Beauty begins growling. Treats and sliced cheese are tosses, Beauty is not receptive and begins growling loudly. The secondary handler attempts to leash Beauty, she begins to retreat while lip curling, barking, and growling. The primary handler is able to lasso Beauty and they attempt to coax her out of kennel, squeaky sounds are also used. Beauty is not receptive. The primary handler attempts mild leash pressure and Beauty is also not receptive. She remains laying down. The handler uses a hook to remove the old food trays (it is noted that Beauty had two full trays of food in her kennel and it appears to be uneaten). Beauty lunges to the front and begins hard barking, snarling, and snapping at the hook while hovering over the food trays. The handler is able to remove the food trays and the leash with the hook. They promptly end the interaction.

Summary:: Tense and growling in back of kennel. Opted to sedate

ENERGY LEVEL:: Beauty is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Beauty.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children. No Cats: Due to growling, hard barking, and lunging towards cats we recommend a home with no cats. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to growling, hard barking, and lunging towards dogs we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog parks. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Beauty's previous owner states that she will jump up often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: Beauty's previous owner states that she will snap, hard bark, and growl towards strangers. It is also noted that she is fearful when her collar is grabbed or touched. Beauty has been observed to growl, bare teeth, and lunge towards handlers when they approach while in kennel. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Beauty would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Beauty's previous owner states that she will growl, hard bark, and lunge at strangers, cats, small aniamls, and dogs. Beauty will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Beauty's previous owner states that she will pull hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
