Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: Colby jumps up often out of excitement when his owner or family comes home. Training should focus on teaching him basic manners and impulse control through positive reinforcement, such as rewarding calm behavior and using consistent cues to reduce jumping. Please see the handout on Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression:Colby is noted to hard bark , growl and lunging, when handlers are in front of his kennel or walk by. Colby is fearful of loud noises such as fireworks, thunderstorms, and passing ambulances, which causes him to pee on himself. Training should aim to desensitize him to these sounds through gradual exposure and positive reinforcement, creating a safe and calm environment to help reduce his fear. Please see the handout on the decompression period. Separation Anxiety/Anxiety: In his prior home, Colby is noted to be anxious when left alone, often whining. Training should focus on reducing his separation anxiety by gradually increasing his comfort with being alone, using techniques such as counter-conditioning, providing engaging toys or activities, and creating a secure environment to help him feel more at ease. Please see the handout on Separation Anxiety and Generalized Anxiety. Kennel presence: Barrier frustration: It is reported that Colby will engage in kennel fighting with neighboring dogs when leaving his kennel for walks. Colby is noted to hard bark , growl and lunging, when handlers are in front of his kennel or walk by. Other: In the prior home it is noted that he loves car rides but sometimes get nervous. He hides underneath the car seat or steering wheel.
