Sargent Hansen
Hello, my name is Sargent Hansen. My animal id is #179404. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/1/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- owner elderly.
Sargent Hansen is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. He is a sweet, senior dog who is not eating despite supportive care for pneumonia. He needs continued care in a hospital setting to recover.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary (7):: 5/20/25: Sargent Hanson is at the front of his kennel when the handler approached wagging his tail as he waits to be leashed. He is easily leashed and taken out of his kennel without a problem. Once outside, Sargent Hanson immediately relieves himself and explores the sidewalk. Sargent Hanson finds a stuff toy and immediately grabs it and lays down on the sidewalk to play with it for a couple minutes and then drops it and continues walking. After a couple minutes, he is easily brought back into the building and into his kennel with ease. 5/17/25: Sargent is barking at the front of his kennel when approached and begins wagging his tail when he notices the leash. He is easily removed from his kennel and taken to the street for his walk. Sargent walks at a slow pace at the handlers side but occasionally walks ahead to relieve himself. During the walk Sargent accepts head scratches and slightly leans in. When the walk is over Sargent is brought back to his kennel and goes in without issue. 5/14/25: Sargent Hanson is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. He is easily leashed and walks slowly out of the kennel and the building beside the handler. He is walked to the street where he continues to walk slowly. He relieves himself and sniffs for a bit before being walked back to the shelter. Sargent Hansen stops at the front of the kennel. Handler applies a bit of leash pressure and walked into kennel and the leash is removed without issue. 5/2/25- Sargent Hansen is laying down in his kennel with a soft body, he is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He pulls hard to various spots to sniff. He is aloof with handler and shows no interest in treats. He has no reaction to any stimuli. Summary:: Hesitant to allow leashing, not accepting treats, muscled into kennel
Date of initial:: 5/2/2025
Summary:: Tense but allows all handling
ENERGY LEVEL:: Hansen is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Hansen.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to handling sensitivity we recommend a home with no young children.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Sargent Hansen's former owners report he will guard valuable resources such as toys and food. We recommend that Hansen be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Hansen's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Handling Sensitivity: Sargent's previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl when startled or when pushed off furniture. They also state he is fearful when his paws are touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Sargent to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Sargent's previous owner states he will hard bark and growl when startled. When first arriving at the care centers Hansen was reported to be somewhat fearful, he would baulk and pancake when being walked into kennel. It should always be Hansen’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Hansen would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Sargent's previous owner states that he will hard bark, growl, and lunge at small animals, and dogs. Sargent will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
