Animal Profile

Cloudberry

Hello, my name is Cloudberry. My animal id is #266209. I am a male silver dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/23/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Cloudberry is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Cloudberry has shown high arousal and persistent leash biting, including grabbing and pulling leashes into his crate and becoming difficult to redirect once leashed. He has also shown resource guarding around food, including hovering over his food tray, baring his teeth, and muzzle punching the crate when approached for a walk. Cloudberry can disengage from leash biting once moved away from the kennel environment, can sometimes be redirected with treats, and is social with staff, but is struggling to acclimate. Medically, Cloudberry has CIRDC.

Medically, Cloudberry has CIRDC. Cloudberry was surrendered to the shelter as a stray and we have no history on his behavior in a home. Cloudberry has not acclimated well to the care center environment, and has shown a low threshold for arousal, particularly around his crate. He has shown leash biting behavior when being taken out of his crate that has been difficult to redirect, and has been observed to hover over food and muzzle punch the front bars when approached while eating. Due to these concerns, We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide decompression, any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based), and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Meet Cloudberry!Cloudberry is a sweet, sensitive boy who is still getting comfortable with all the changes around him. He was brought in as a stray, so we're still learning about his past, but he's shown us that he may just need a little time to find his footing. Give him a peaceful place to land and a person who will let him take things one paw at a time, and Cloudberry may surprise you with how much he blossoms. My Ideal HomeCloudberry would love a calm, quiet home where he can settle in at his own pace. His ideal person will be patient and understanding, giving him plenty of choice while using treats and positive reinforcement to help him feel more confident. Walks, enrichment, and cozy time together will give him a comfortable routine as he gets to know his new world. Good with Other Pets?Cloudberry's history with other dogs is unknown, and during a recent introduction he became a little unsure when the other dog wanted to play. He'll do best with slow, thoughtful introductions and plenty of time to get comfortable. For now, a quiet introduction is much more his speed than a busy dog park. Good with Kids?Cloudberry would do best in an adult-only home where things can stay calm and predictable while he settles in. He's a sensitive boy who will appreciate having the freedom to approach new people and experiences when he's ready. Things to KnowCloudberry can be reserved in new situations and may prefer to hang back while he takes everything in, but he tolerates gentle handling and follows along on walks with only mild pulling. His new family should let him set the pace and avoid rushing him into interactions before he's ready. He's a quiet little guy with a whole lot of potential, and we're hoping he finds the peaceful home where his true personality can finally shine.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

Date of intake:: 9/23/2026

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray; history unknown

Other Notes:: 10/22/26: Cloudberry displays intense leash biting behavior when being removed from his crate. He pulls several leashes into the crate when staff attempt to move him. He is then successfully leashed using treats, but continues to grab and hold the leash for several seconds, and cannot be redirected with treats, as the handler quickly moves him from the room and into the Behavior Office, where he disengages himself and begins to sniff the ground.

Date of assessment:: 9/27/2026

Summary:: Leash Walking Strength and pulling: mild pulling Reactivity to humans: did not pass Reactivity to dogs: did not pass Leash walking comments: Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): tense body, keeps to self as explores room Call over: no approach Sociability comments: Handling Soft handling: tense, tolerates contact, mouth closed Exuberant handling: tense, tolerates contact, mouth closed Handling comments: Arousal Jog: follows, distracted Arousal comments: Knock: no response Knock Comments: Toy: no respone Toy comments:

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-dog history recorded. 09/28/26 Cloudberry is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He readily approaches the gate with a neutral frame, becoming a bit forward as he sniffs the female. When meeting face to face, both engage in mutual sniffing but Cloudberry becomes increasingly tense as the female attempts to solicit play and does not disengage on his own. Eventually, handlers guide him away and he shakes off.

Summary (7):: 10/22/26: An ACS reports that Cloudberry has pulled several leashes into the crate while staff have attempted to leash him. He is at the front of the crate when the handler approaches and grabs for the leash, but is able to be leashed using a treat held against the door. Once removed from the crate he continues to grab the leash intently, and is unable to be redirected with treats. As Cloudberry grips the leash, the handler quickly moves him into the Behavior Office, where he disengages and begins to sniff the floor. 10/21/26: Cloudberry is observed to be intensely leash biting as he exits the kennel room. He is able to be redirected using treats. 10/11: A handler observed Cloudberry hovering over his food tray, baring his teeth, and then escalated to muzzle-punching the crate bars when an ACS went to try to leash him for a walk. Due to his behavior, Cloudberry is given some time to finish eating his food before making another attempt to take him out.

Date of intake:: 9/23/2026

Summary:: whale eyes, flinching, lip licking, drooling, jaw clicking

Date of initial:: 9/23/2026

Summary:: lip-licking and turning head on exam but tolerated all medical handling

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Cloudberry is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Cloudberry has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that he should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Cloudberry associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats. Place with a New Hope partner: Cloudberry has not acclimated well to the care center environment, and due to his low threshold for arousal we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful,Anxiety,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Potential resource guarding has been observed in care, as Cloudberry was observed to bare his teeth, muzzle-punch the crate bars, and hover over his food when approached by a staff member who was going to take him out for a walk. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from Cloudberry's possession without safely trading for an item of equal or greater value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful | Anxiety: Cloudberry has been fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give him the option to walk away from any social interaction. Cloudberry should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. We have no history on his behavior in a home environment. It should always be Cloudberry choice to approach a new person or thing. He would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period and Generalized. Low threshold for arousal | Leash biting: Cloudberry has displayed intense leash biting behavior when being removed from his crate. He needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel his energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and force-free, positive reinforcement-based training may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded. Please see handouts on Arousal and Leash Manners.
