Jamal 2.0
Hello, my name is Jamal 2.0. My animal id is #221188. I am a desexed male orange tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/24/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.
Jamal 2.0 is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. Jamal 2.0 tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/28/25 FB79 On the top part of his kennel, Jamal has his tail tightly wrapped with forward ears and slightly wide eyes; he slow blinks when i speak to him but flinches when i bring my hand in close to place down treats which he has no interest in. He tenses up with a hunched back and start to back away from the tool when i bring it closer to pet. Jamal's eyes dilate when i use the tool to pet on his head and cheeks as he continues to back away from any contact. 3/4/25 FB58 Sitting on top of his den with a tense face and body, ears tilted and hunched with his tail curled tightly around his body. He begins to low growl and hisses when I move his Gaba treatment tray up onto the den in front of him. He is tolerant of some touch with the scratcher tool but continues to low growl and hiss, and remains tense and hunched throughout. Definitely more stressed than I would like him to be at this point and displaying some defensive aggression. 3/7/25 FB79 Sitting on top of his den, Jamal has his paws tucked away with his tail tightly wrapped and wide/dilated eyes when i open his kennel door. His ears immediately flatten to his head and his harshly hisses when i get closer and speak to him - he continues to hiss and does not tolerate petting with the tool as he backs away from it with his shoulder hunched and the harsh hissing continues. 3/10/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, little round head poking out with a tense expression. He retreats completely into his den when offered treats.. I do not push petting at this time. Not interested in interaction. Hopefully he eats the treats later when he's feeling more safe.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination,Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: In the previous home, Jamal 2.0 has access to one litterbox that is located in the bedroom. The litterbox is uncovered, has a plastic litterbox liner, and has unscented litter. Jamal would rarely have litterbox accidents and the litterbox would be scooped weekly. It seems that Jamal 2.0 would at times have litter box accidents but it would happen rarely. His litter box was cleaned weekly which may have been the cause of some of these accidents.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Jamal 2.0 would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Jamal 2.0 is in his den and completely hidden from view - he cannot be coaxed out when spoken to softly or when offered treats. When the den cover is lifted, he is sitting with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, and pressed against the back of the den. When the scratcher tool is slowly introduced into the den, he tenses but is tolerant of touch as he remains tense and frozen. When the tool is removed, he comes out of the den and quickly moves up onto the shelf where he sits curled up with a tense face and body.
