Animal Profile

Aleman

Hello, my name is Aleman. My animal id is #228756. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 6/4/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Aleman is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. Aleman has been reactive towards both humans and dogs since arriving in our care. He will bark and lunge towards dogs and people with a tense body. He can only be walked by select staff members as he can not be redirected from this behavior. In once instance he was in an empty yard with a handler and when another staff member came out, Aleman focused on the staff member, tense pulling forward and head whipping towards handler. Aleman has allowed some interaction with handlers when in an empty yard and during his assessment. Medically, Aleman is receiving treatment for CIRDC.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process!

Summary (6):: 6/21/25: Aleman is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and he pulls hard to the yard for a walk. In the yard, he would explore around with sniffing and would jump up high on the handler with a loose body. He was comfortable approaching the handler and would sit for treats. He would catch the treats in the air and liked to chase after them when the handler tossed them on the ground. He would launch towards birds that were in the pen with heavy panting. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and enters with ease. 06/20/25: Aleman is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted by treats and taken to the yard for his walk. He pulls moderately exiting to the yard and begins frantically pulling forward, jumping around and quickly stopping at random. Once in the play yard he uses the bathroom and hops around, at one point jumping toward handler however handler steps away. He is walked around other play yards and around their perimeter. He is somewhat treat motivated and follows simple commands such as sit, down, wait and paw. He is brought back outside after a while and barks while jumping intensely at the door leading back inside. Handler asks Aleman to sit and wait, which he does and allows handler to clip. He pulls moderately while returning and enters kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 6/19/25: Aleman is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He begins to demand bark as the door is unlocked but is easily leashed using treats as a lure. He is taken to the closed yard for a walk and kept on leash. He moves in a frantic manner outside, darting back and forth. He jumps on handler displaying displacement behavior but is easily redirected and cued into a sit. He knows the 'sit,' 'down,' and 'paw' cue. When a handler comes out to the yard, Aleman begins to hard bark and lunge, even head whipping towards handler holding the leash. Handler keeps him straight armed. He ceases after handler returns back inside. He is returned to kennel without issue. 6/19/25: Aleman is reported to be reactive towards dogs outside and in the hallway. As well as, reactive and lunging towards handlers in the hallway and outside. 6/14/25: It is reported that Aleman is extremely dog reactive and goes after dogs in the yard. 06/13/25: Aleman is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats and exits kennel quickly, Aleman is tense when exiting kennel and cautious when walking down the hall. He follows treats tossed out to the yard for his walk. While outside there are no other dogs and Aleman sniffs around the perimeter of the yard. He pulls moderately and investigates smells he finds for a bit, using the bathroom along the way. His posture loosens as he spends more time outside and becomes more comfortable. After a while he is brought back inside, he reacts to a dog at the other end of the hall and is somewhat redirected with treats but it is difficult to gain his attention. He is brought back to kennel and returns to kennel, interaction is ended shortly after. 6/12/25: Aleman is reported to jump away and flip onto his back when a handler stepped out of a kennel room while he was passing by. He is also observed to bark and lunge towards dogs while on leash. When in the yard Aleman saw a dog through the back gate and began to react to them. 6/8/25: Aleman is standing in his kennel as handler approaches. He is comfortable taking treats and is leashed with ease. He pulls hard out of his kennel and is taken for a walk outside. He has a tense body and starts lunging and barking at a dog in the hallway. He is able to be redirected with treats. He then starts to lunge and bark towards another dog in the drive way. He is able to be taken away and he then sits for treats. He would explore around before being taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he would take treats and was nervous of being petted and reacted to the door when the handler knocked. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He was taken back to his kennel with no issues.

Date of intake:: 6/4/2025

Summary:: Reactive to people and dogs, approaches handler and licks their hand

Date of initial:: 6/5/2025

Summary:: Fearful, avoidant of medical staff, sedated

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Aleman so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and on leash reactivity we recommend an adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Aleman has been observed to headwhip towards handlers during contact. t is important to always go slow and give Aleman the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Aleman would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash reactivity: Aleman has been observed to hard bark and lunge towards dogs while on leash. During knock Aleman also hard barked and lunged. Throughout his stay at the care center Aleman has been observed to be highly on leash reactive to dogs and people while on leash. Aleman will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
