Saffron
Hello, my name is Saffron. My animal id is #224237. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 4/9/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.
Saffron is on the at-risk list for medical concerns. Saffron is a young cat that has a significant URI causing prolonged anorexia and severe weight loss. She has not improved on the supportive care administered and available in shelter. Saffron should be hospitalized and would ideally have an e-tube placed until she begins eating on her own.

Saffron is a young cat that has a significant URI causing prolonged anorexia and severe weight loss. She has not improved on the supportive care administered and available in shelter. Saffron should be hospitalized and would ideally have an e-tube placed until she begins eating on her own. What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. Saffron is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, he does attempt to flee or avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: When I first met Saffron, it seemed like he had already made up his mind about the Care Center except this wasn't quite the case. Yes, a well intentioned offer of treats and snacks led Saffron to retreat even further into his cubby but he will accept pets, he's just not one to seek them out. Saffron's making sense of the shelter and is doing so, as he should, on his own time. He investigates new snacks with the practiced nosey of a connoisseur and loves to play, just usually when we're not around. Saffron gets adorably excited and grateful for the things we bring him. Recognizing new crinkle toys as the tokens of love that they are, he puffs his cheeks and gently pounces after them. Saffron came to us from a home with many other cats and while he might be going at his own pace, he's hoping to find a patient family who will welcome him for just that.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
KNOWN HISTORY:: Saffron was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/16/25 FB61 In hidey box upon a reproach, body and face neutral rears forward and pupils dilated. He sniffs the treats offered before eating them and he tolerates petting while turning to watch the scratcher tool curiously. When I check on him later I see that he’s playing with the catnip toy offered. Has potential! 4/19/25 FB58 In his hidey box when I approach and shows no interest in the dry treats or squeeze up I offer. When I slowly introduce the scratcher tool, he tenses and backs away even further into the hide. I leave the treats for him to eat on his own later. 4/23/25 FB61 He is crouched in his cat bed as I approach, body and face neutral as he sniffles and sneezes. He does not show interest in treats or the toy offered… but I notice that his collar is too long and too tight. He gives me absolutely no trouble when I cut it off. Very tolerant… very handsome. 5/01/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, head resting on linens and face/body neutral. He tolerates petting from within his den while flinching, tilting his ears and leaning away from me. He does not eat the treats offered today - his appetite may be lower than usual due to his URI.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Saffron came from a home with about 20+ other cats, it is likely that he was not appropriately socialized to humans.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Saffron would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Saffron is sitting at the back of the shelf with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. He is tolerant of some pets along his head and body before he moves to jump off the shelf with a low body. He then moves into the cubby with a low and tense body, eyes wide and ears tilted. Pick up is not attempted and the interaction is ended to prevent further FAS. Saffron is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age.
