Bite history:: Seven was reported to have engaged in an altercation with the resident dog. The finder's brother was reported to have been bitten when he was trying to separate the two dogs. Seven was reported to have bitten the brother on the right hand, the web between the thumb and pointer finger. The bite was reported to have drawn blood and broken skin.

Summary:: According to Seven's previous owner(s), he briefly lived with another dog and they frequently barked at each other. Seven has a bite incident as a result of owner attempting to separate the dogs when they were barking/fighting each other. 06/24/26 Seven is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He initially approaches with a forward frame, high-flagged tail and will loosen slightly as the female bounces along the gate. He continues to follow the female along the gate as she moves. Due to Seven's reported bite incident, the interaction is kept to a gate greet.

Summary (6):: 7/20/26: Seven is sitting at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leash with ease, and he then pulls hard on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he continues to pull hard ahead while heavy panting. He would launch towards pigeons that he was walking towards and is comfortable approaching the handler to receive treats. He has no reactions to dogs or people and pulls hard while heavy panting on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 07-20-26 : As the handler gets closer, Seven is lying in the center of his kennel. He is easily leashed but does not stand. He gets up and leaves the kennel by himself when the leash is on him. He is taken outside for a morning stroll while pulling mildly. Seven doesn't seem really interested in the handler. He is very energetic and very interested in his surroundings, sniffing and all. Without any problems, Seven is brought back inside and put back in his kennel. 7/13/26: Seven is at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly frame as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and will walk out to the play yard with the handler. They show him a ball and he is immediately focused on it, walking right beside the handler and occasionally bouncing high into the air but does not attempt to grab the ball. Once in the play yard, Seven's collar is clipped with a drag leash and he is free to roam around the room. He will then engage in a game of fetch with the handler and will even jump into the pool after a ball. He is returned to kennel with no issue and secured safely.

Summary (7):: 7/6/26: Seven is at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame. He is leashed with ease and will walk out of the kennel quickly and will pull moderately to the play yard, where his collar is clipped to a drag leash. He will then run around the yard chasing the pigeons out of it and then will approach the handler and jump up on them. They will redirect him with a treat. He chases it and will then jump over the bench a few times. The handler will then treat and trail him over the A-frame. He will then turn around and go up it again but stops at the top right in front of the handler. They give him some treats and then lure him off. He will then play a game of two-toy fetch with the handler for a while before he is returned to the kennel with no issue. 06/15/26: Seven is lying in the middle of his kennel as the handler approaches. He does not stand up, but is leashed with ease. When the leash is on him, he stands and exits the kennel on his own. He is brought outside to the play yard where he sniffs around. Seven shows very little interest in the handler. He doesn't always accept treats, but will occasionally take them. Seven is brought back inside and returned to his kennel with no issue. 06/09/26: Seven is lying in the middle of his kennel as the handler approaches. He does not get up, but he allows the handler to leash him. When the kennel door is fully opened, he stands up and hops out. In the office, Seven sniffs around. He maintains a somewhat tense body throughout the entire time that he is out. He shows some interest in treats, but does not interact much with the handler. The handler is able to clip the leash and return him to the kennel without issue.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Seven's bite history, resource guarding, and potential for defensive behaviors, we recommend an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment and during his handling assessment, the behavior department recommends that Seven be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Seven to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward-based training only is advised when introducing him to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Seven presents with outside of the care centers. Single-Pet Home/Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the bite incident that occurred between Seven and the resident dog, we feel that he should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until is behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Seven associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats.

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Seven was noted to be partially house trained. Due to only being in the finder's home for a short period of time, he is more than likely prone to having accidents once in another new environment. He will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Please see handout on House soiling. Resource guarding: During the toy portion of his assessment, Seven moved away, became tense and started body blocking when the prop hand approached while he had a toy. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Seven's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high-value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Seven would frequently jump on handlers during his assessment, including when seeking treats or attention. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Seven was noted to be fearful and a bit defensive during his pick up. During the initial part of his stay, he was tense and mostly avoidant. It is important to move slowly with Seven, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow him to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and does not want to solicit attention. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Bite history (human): Seven bit the finder's brother when he attempted to separate Seven and the resident dog during an altercation. The victim was bitten on the right hand, the web between the thumb and pointer finger. The bite was reported to have drawn blood and broken skin.
