Animal Profile

Little Loaf

Hello, my name is Little Loaf. My animal id is #221231. I am a female gray tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 2/25/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Little Loaf is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center. She displays signs of overstimulation which has escalated to bite and scratch incidents while in shelter. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. The staff think I would do best in a home where there are no other cats. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I am a cat that is in need of a lap! I can't wait to be your new lap cat. A volunteer writes: Winning the award for the world's cutest name, Little Loaf is here and trying to make the most of things with admittedly mixed results. She was found outside and brought to the precinct without a lot of information. Now that she's here, she's trying to learn, which is easier said than done. Little Loaf acts very much like she wants us to please pay attention to her by sitting right at the front with a soft body and leaning herself into pets or simply reaching her paws out to say hi. Little Loaf is every bit the social lady but then things get too much and she instantly decides that was one pet too many and she can't possibly have so much attention right now. I love the decisiveness and it's understandable that shelter life doesn't seem to be her cup of tea. Little Loaf's a curious girl who seems a bit bored at times and reactive to her neighbors at others. We know there's a forever family out there for Little Loaf, which is why we hope you'll consider making room in your heart and home for her.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Little Loaf was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/5/25 ACFR During cleaning and feeding, she takes a few steps out of the kennel to explore with neutral body and eyes. Easily picked up and returned to the kennel but when I was tidying up the kennel and removing/giving food bowl, Little Loaf attempted to bite my hand. Did not show signs of getting overwhelmed. She continues to solicit attention by reaching her paw through the door, but has also been observed to stress meow. Possible signs of boredom and frustration.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Calm,Sweet,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: During the medical exam, Little Loaf was very food motivated, allowed all handling, and was tense for some part but later relaxed; however, when attempting to put her in the adoptions room, she became very reactive to other cats, stress meowing, and started hissing and swatting at her kennel door. She appeared to have calmed down in the presence of neighboring cats in the cat holding room by the time of her initial behavior assessment. Little Loaf displays signs of overstimulation such as a swishing her tail sideways when stroking her body and during pick up; however, she is easily distracted/rewarded with treats for remaining calm, quivers her tail in excitement, and did not escalate any further during the initial evaluation. Bite/scratch history: On 02.28.2025 at approximately 6:45 pm, a volunteer was interacting with Little Loaf. Little Loaf jumped up socially and put their forelegs on the volunteer's chest; she pet her and then lifted her back in the kennel and closed it. Volunteer left briefly to do something else and then came back, and Little Loaf was at the front of the kennel with a loose body and leaning into Volunteer's hands as she was petting her. Little Loaf looked down from the kennel and Volunteer lifted her left knee to prevent her from jumping out and started to close the kennel door. At that point, Little Loaf bit and latched onto Volunteer's left forearm, biting and scratching several times. Volunteer stepped back and Little Loaf jumped to the floor. Volunteer tried to walk away but Little Loaf pursued her, biting and scratching both her left and right knees and lower legs several times. Volunteer was able to exit the cat holding room and shut the door behind, leaving Little Loaf loose in the room. Two staff members were called to assist and were able to get Little Loaf into a net and then into the den without further incident. Volunteer sustained several punctures and deep scratches to her left forearm, lower left leg and knee, and lower right leg and knee. She cleaned her wounds and applied topical antibiotic, and will be seeking medical attention at urgent care. On 3/2/25, ACS staff went to clean the Little Loaf's kennel. Food was given to the Little Loaf to keep her distracted. ACS stated Little Loaf gave no warning signs and just jumped out the kennel onto her face, resulting in multiple scratch to the ACS face. Little Loaf bit and latched onto handler's left forearm, biting and scratching several times. Handler stepped back and Little Loaf jumped to the floor. Handler tried to walk away but Little Loaf pursued her, biting and scratching both her left and right knees and lower legs several times.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Observed to be reactive to other cats during initial transport to the adoption room. Counselor discretion is advised if this cat is being adopted into a home with other cats. Adult only home due to severity of bite/scratch incidents.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 02/28/25: Little Loaf is a social, calm, and sweet cat. She was lying down curled up and resting on top of the den. When spoken to and opening the door, she wakes up and crouches down, hovering over the edge of the den with a soft body and eyes. She eagerly sniffs and accepts treats out of the assessor's hand and is easily coaxed to climb down to the front of the kennel. She welcomes petting on the head and slightly leans in for cheek rubs. When stroking her body, she swishes her tail sideways. She is easily distracted/rewarded with treats for remaining calm and quivers her tail in excitement. During pick up, she is calm and tenses up a little bit as her tail continues to swish sideway when pet all over and held for 5 seconds. After placing her back down, Little Loaf continues to appreciate more treats and petting at the front. 03/09/25: Little Loaf appears to display similar behaviors from her previous evaluation; however, due to the 2 bite/scratch incidents that occurred in shelter, she there may be some additional complexities to her potential behavior challenges. She was lying down in loaf position at the back of the kennel with a soft body and alert eyes. She sniffs treats offered and allows petting on the head with the scratcher tool. She leans in for petting and then looks back and swishes her tail sideways when stroking her body. She steps forward to stretch her body and head bunts for petting. During handling, she is calm when lifted, placed on the floor outside of the kennel, and picked up and held for 5 seconds. After placing her back down, she continues to appreciate more petting on the head and curiously scans the environment. Little Loaf interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, and occasionally tolerates petting and handling but has displayed behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, scratch, bite, and may or may not tolerate petting or handling depending on how overwhelmed she becomes during interactions. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
