Hello, my name is Bear. My animal id is #13068. I am a desexed male brown dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 11/19/2017.

Bear is at risk for medical reasons, having been diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, which is contagious to other dogs. Bear requires an adult only home.

A volunteer writes: A rising star, a young actor with a candid face every teen would fall in love with...this is how I see Bear, a young man we have right now within our walls. He is gorgeous, elegant, slender, and his beauty unravels as his wariness slowly fades away. Bear was initially at the back of his kennel. He likes treats, and that got him to his door and to accept my leash, as well as a caress on his head. He was hesitant out in the street, staying rather close to me. Darting bikes and honking cars do not care about sensitive dogs. A second tour around the block brought Bear's timid tail out, and I must say that our stroll felt much better to both of us. At first, hand shy, Bear started to look at me with a bruised puppy look and accepted my caresses all over. This young guy will win the heart of many once he completely comes out of his shell. Dry liver helping, Bear posed very naturally for pictures. He is a born model. He got quite a number of compliments while we were in the waiting room. Bear walked back nicely and willingly to his den, and when I came to say good night, he was at his door, took a rawhide from my hand and went to chew it on his bed. We all love progress, and Bear is certainly moving in the right direction. Now, this young man needs a home to call his own and a family to love. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center.

Summary:: Bear did not approach the assessor in the assessment room but allowed the assessor to approach him. He was tense and trembling throughout the assessment, but allowed all handling.
Summary:: Proximity Sensitive: These dogs have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs or could be extremely fearful in the shelter environment. They are socially shy and may exhibit fearful body posturing, defensive posturing, or physically avoid/ignore other dogs. Bear has had limited interaction with dogs in the care center due to fearful, uncomfortable behavior. The behavior department recommends allowing Hope a period of decompression before immediate introductions to other dogs. Future introductions should be conducted at a slow pace, to respectful dogs.
Summary (1):: 11/19: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Bear is highly fearful, trembling, lip curls and turns head away when approached.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Bear has been timid in the shelter environment but will warm up and become social with handlers while engaging outside the kennel. He continues to be fearful of novice items and people, but will engage after a slow introduction.

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Bear is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Bear is very fearful at the care center and appears shut down, remaining disconnected with handlers. It is important to always go slow and give Bear the option to walk away from any social interaction. Bear should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Bear’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Bear would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
