Bella
Hello, my name is Bella. My animal id is #251468. I am a female gray dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/7/2026.
Bella is at risk for behavior reasons. Bella has quickly deteriorated in care, biting at the leash, and reacting to neighboring kennels. She was initially sweet and social with staff, but more recently has become alert and aloof. Medically, she is apparently healthy.

Bella has quickly deteriorated in care, biting at the leash, and reacting to neighboring kennels. She was initially sweet and social with staff, but more recently has become alert and aloof. Medically, she is apparently healthy. Meet Bella! Bella is a loving, energetic girl who is very people-focused and happiest when she is close to her humans. She has been described as a true family dog who loves attention, affection, and connection. Personality Bella is full of enthusiasm and wears her heart on her sleeve. She is friendly and loving, but she does need help learning how to keep her excitement a bit more controlled. Walks and Energy Bella has a lot of energy and really enjoys her walks and outdoor time. She does pull strongly on leash, so she will need continued leash training and consistency. She is not reactive toward people while walking, but she can become very focused on other dogs and may pull hard toward them, which will need ongoing management and training support. Home Life Bella is crate trained and does well settling in her crate for a few hours at a time. She knows basic cues like sit and takes treats gently, which shows how willing she is to engage and learn. She enjoys a routine with multiple short walks throughout the day and settles well once she has had some exercise. She also loves car rides and is happy to join for outings. Play and Favorites Bella loves to chew, especially durable toys and peanut butter filled bones. She also enjoys bacon treats and is food motivated, which makes training fun and rewarding for her. Social Behavior Bella is very social with people and enjoys attention and interaction. She can be very excited when meeting new people and may jump up or get a bit mouthy with her leash when she is highly aroused. She is not fearful, just very enthusiastic, and she benefits from calm structure and guidance to help her settle into more polite greetings and calmer behavior. My Ideal Home Bella would do best with an adopter who understands high energy, people-loving dogs and is ready to continue her training. She will need consistency with leash work and help learning calmer ways to express her excitement. In the right home, she will be an incredibly loving and loyal companion who brings a lot of joy and personality to everyday life. Fun Fact Bella loves bath time and water and thinks it is all part of the fun. She is also a big fan of vegetables, just not tomatoes.

Summary (1):: Bella is a social and affectionate dog who loves being where people are. She enjoys bath time and water and is full of energy on walks, though she tends to pull strongly on the leash and can be somewhat difficult to manage. She typically goes for walks 3–4 times a day, lasting 10–15 minutes each. Bella is crate trained, doing very well in a large metal crate with two doors, where she spends about four hours at a time. She loves car rides and knows how to sit on command. Her previous owner adored her for being friendly, affectionate, and always ready to cuddle, describing her as a true family dog who thrives on love, attention, treats, and praise. Bella’s favorite activities include chewing on aggressive toys, enjoying peanut butter-filled bones, and savoring bacon treats, fruits, and vegetables (but skip the tomatoes!). She is gentle and kind when receiving food, making her a joyful and loving companion.
Summary (6):: 4/19 Bella is leashed with the help of a jerky treat and brought out to the yard, pulling hard on the leash the whole way. In the yard, she is panting and alert, looking for a large mixed-breed dog, Hamlet, in the neighboring yard. She goes under the tarp on the fence in and stands up against the back of the bench, trying to look into the other yard. When the other dog is taken in she runs around the yard and then comes over to the handler and accepts pets while standing on the handler's lap. Bella watches the leash when it's time to go in to bite, but ultimately runs over to the gate and sits and allows the handler to loop the slip lead over her. She pulls back to the kennel and easily goes in.
Summary (7):: 4/14 Bella is at the front of her kennel, panting and jumping excitedly. She is easily leashed and taken for a walk around the building. She pulls hard at the end of her leash until staff takes her to the yard. Bella was placed on a drag leash and explored the yard and looking for pets from staff. Bella was taken back to her kennel, where she pulled the whole way back and was placed in kennel with no issues. 4.12 Bella was at the front of her kennel barking and jumping upon approach. She continued to jump when staff went to loop her. It took the staff two times to get the leash on. Bella pulled hard through the halls. Staff member took her to the yard where she explored and relieved herself. She got the zoomies and would jump on the staff occasionally or bounce off staff. Staff were able to get her to calm down for a few minutes and sit and were able to pet her all over and keep her relaxed momentarily. When going to leash her to go back inside, she allowed staff to get the loop over, but then began leash biting. Staff tried to hold the leash away from her until she stopped. She bit the leash for a few seconds. Walking through the halls, she pulled very hard and was trying to kennel fight. Staff were able to keep her away from the other kennels and get her back in hers without issue. 4/9 Bella is at the front of her kennel, panting and jumping excitedly. She is easily leashed and taken for a walk around the building. She pulls hard at the end of her leash until she smells something interesting, immediately relaxing and loosening up on the leash. She is then taken to the yard where she is exuberant, running around and jumping into staff's arms while they sit on the bench. She is given a few treats to chase after, which she does and intermittently comes back to staff, jumping up on their legs and soliciting attention. When returning, she is easily leashed but pulls very hard back into the building. She balks slightly at the kennel entrance but staff gently ushers her inside. The interaction ends there.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to social hyperarousal, we recommend a home with no children Recommend no dog parks: Bella is tense and fixated on other dogs when attempting a gate greet. We recommend she does no visit the dog park.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manner/Impulse Control: Bella lacks basic manners and impulse control. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see the handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Social Hyperarousal: Bella becomes easily aroused when interacting with people, lacking basic manners and impulse control, jumping up, biting at the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Bella to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. She should be rewarded with treats when calm. If she escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Bella. Please see the handout on Arousal. Anxiety: Bella appears anxious at the care center, often panting, pacing the yard. If Bella displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Bella has been observed to fixate on other dogs. She will pace the yard when they pass and can be difficult to interrupt. During a gate greet she has tense forward facing posture and dilated pupils. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Bella is quick to grab the leash in her mouth. We recommend walking her with treats or a toy to dissuade her from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see the handout on Leash Manners.
