Summary:: When brought into the assessment room, Charly was observed to be tense and fearful. Noted to maintain her distance from the handler and stretch her body in order to get a treat. When the handler reached towards Charly to clip a dragline to her collar, Charly retreated quickly and hid behind the secondary handler. Charly is receptive to treats but will not step closer to the handler to get them. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Charly is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: According to Charly's previous owner(s), Charly is friendly and outgoing with other dogs. She has lived with dogs in her previous home. 8/27/26: Charly is introduced to a novel neutered male and is loose at the fence with hackles minimally raised, digging with her back legs. She toe taps and play bows along the fence line, the other dog does not reciprocate play and Charly is redirected without issue. She is then introduced to a novel intact male and digs with her back legs and toe taps along the fence. The other dog is let into the yard and she begins start stop play. She bumps into the dog often and overwhelms him so the two are given a break. The other dog reapproaches but when she bumps him and begins exuberant play, the other dog stops reciprocating play and the meet is ended. 8/26/26: Charly is introduced to a novel intact male and is loose at the gate with high wags, sniffing nose to nose through the gate and stretching out her neck to continue sniffing. The other dog alarm barks and Charly toe taps backwards, then play bows. Charly is then introduced to a novel intact male and is forward leaning at the fence, digging with her back legs. She play bows and bounces towards the fence, then bounces along the fence line while the other dog is reactive towards her. 8/22/26: Charly is introduced to a novel neutered male and is loose with high wags at the fence, following the other dog along the fence line to sniff. She toe taps as she waits to be let into the yard and stands up on the fence briefly. When face to face, Charly initiates start stop play but the other dog immediately attempts to mount her and is pulled off. She toe taps and bounces, the other dog stands on his hind legs and she does the same but is overwhelmed by the other dog's playstyle, raising her hackles and attempting to retreat. The dogs are separated and Charly shakes off, not reapproaching. She is then introduced to a novel intact male and is loose at the fence with high wags and hackles raised. When face to face, she begins play bowing and bouncing, spinning frequently. The other dog does a lot of leaping on and standing on his hind legs so the two are given a break. Charly shakes off and sniffs briefly in the yard before reapproaching, pulling towards the other dog while play bowing. The other dog play bows and licks her face before disengaging and exploring the yard. They have short spurts of play but the other dog will frequently shake off and independently explore. Charly is let off leash and zooms across the yard, reapproaching the other dog often. The two engage in play bowing and knocking, the other dog does some tackling as well. They are given another break and Charly shakes off. The other dog doesn't reapproach and the meet is ended.

Summary (2):: 8/15/26: Charly is introduced to a novel intact male and is loose with mid level wags at the fence, toe tapping. When face to face, Charly begins start stop play, bouncing and spinning. The other dog attempts to chin over/mount and she spins while bouncing to be face to face each time. The other dog growls when unable to mount and Charly is non reactive and continues to attempt play. The dog growls another time before the two are separated and Charly remains loose and wiggly. Charly is then introduced to a novel neutered male and is loose at the gate. The other dog is let in and Charly begins play bowing and spinning. She bumps him moderately and is in his face, the other dog disengages and she follows him around the yard soliciting play before being separated. 8/13/26: Charly is introduced to a novel intact male and approaches the fence with a loose wiggly body. The other dog is reactive and Charly retreats, looking at the other dog but not reacting back. She is then introduced to a novel intact male and is loose and wiggly at the gate. The two sniff nose to nose and play bow at the fence. When face to face, Charly attempts start stop play but is overwhelmed by the other dog's exuberant play, giving appropriate corrections before separation. 8/12/26: Charly is introduced to a familiar intact female and is loose and wiggly at the gate. She is let into the yard and bounces with the other dog and runs laps across the yard. She leaps over the other dog often and is tolerant of moderate bumping and the other dog being in her face. She takes appropriate breaks and remains loose while interacting with the other dog. 8/8/26: Charly is introduced to a novel intact female and approaches the fence with a loose wiggly body and mid level wagging tail, toe tapping. She play bows along the fence line following the other dog and once let into the yard immediately runs over and begins play bowing. She sprints around the yard with the dog while engaging in start stop play, often leaping on/over the other dog as they are on the ground. She has hackles minimally raised but remains loose and continues to bounce, play slap, and sprint back and forth with a relaxed open panting mouth. *Previous dog-dog notes can be given upon request*

Summary (5):: 8/29/26: Charly is at the front of her kennel, jumping up on the kennel door; she is easily leashed and brought out the room. During the elevator ride, the handler attempts to pet Charly, but she moves away she is brought to the yard for playgroup (see D2D notes). After the interaction, the handler brings Charly inside. The handler tosses treats into her kennel, and Charly enters to eat them. 8/22/26: Charly is at the front of her kennel with a soft body; she is easily leashed and brought out the room. The handler tosses treats into her kennel, and Charly enters to eat them. 8/13/26: On the whiteboard, Charly is noted to be scared of loud noises; she also refused to walk during the midday (in the previous day). Additionally, Charly is reported to vocalize, frequently jump, paint his kennel with feces, and toss her water bowl around. 8/13/26: Charly is at the front of her kennel with a soft body; she is easily leashed and brought out the room. During the elevator ride, the handler pets Charly which she allows with a neutral body. She is brought to the yard for playgroup (see D2D notes). Before the interaction, Charly allows pets from the other handlers; after the interaction, the handler brings Charly inside. The handler tosses treats into her kennel, and Charly enters to eat them. 8/12: Volunter Note - Gentle, sweet, fearful. Easy to leash and exit the ISO kennels but, once outside, did not really want to walk much beyond the big gate. So, we returned to her kennel. I hope to walk her again on another day, at a different time.

Summary (6):: 8/12/26: Charly is at the front of her kennel with a loose body, jumping around; she is easily leashed and brought out the room. Charly is brought to the yard for playgroup (see D2D notes); afterwards she is returned to her kennel with ease. 8/8/26: Charly is at the front of the kennel jumping up and down barking. She is pawing at the kennel door as the handler unlocks it. Charly is easily leashed and she pulls moderately out of the kennel, she bounces down the hall and downstairs where she is taken to the backyard. Charly does an interaction with another dog (see dog-dog notes). After sometime, Charly is easily re-leashed and returned to her kennel without issue. 7/29/26: Charly is at the front of her kennel with a loose body and wagging tail. She is leashed with a treat and brought to the street. She is hypervigilant and moderately tense. She ignores passersby. She relieves herself then begins pulling back to the shelter. She is brought to the assessment room (see notes) then returned to kennel with a tossed treat. 7/25/26: Charly is at the front of her kennel with a loose body, jumping on the kennel door repeatedly; is easily leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Charly walks with mild leash tension; she doesn't react to dogs or people. Charly looks at the handler with soft eyes; she allows pets and sits on command. While walking back to the shelter, Charly begins to pull hard but eventually settles. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and walks Charly to his kennel; he doesn't enter on hrt own, so the handler tosses treats into it and she climbs right in. 07/20/26: Charly is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, she jumps up and accepts treats from handler. While distracted she is leashed and taken to the street for her walk. Outside she is aloof but pulls forward moderately sniffing spots on the street and looking to people inquisitively. Charly walks for a while and stops to sniff spots on the street, she accepts treats as well as pets under the chin with a soft body. She is eventually brought back inside and returns to her kennel following tossed treats.

Summary (7):: 7/14/26: Charly is at the front of the kennel jumping on the door with a loose body and wagging tail when the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately out of the kennel room. She is lead to the driveway and walked briefly due to the heat. She allows petting and takes treats with a soft mouth. She returns to her kennel but it is not ready yet so she sits outside the room and waits while taking more treats. Once her kennel is ready, she returns willingly. 7/14/26: Charly's kennel is observed to be in disarray - water bowl overturned with other items torn up or scattered about. 7/5/26: Charly is at the front of her pop-up crate with a soft body and wagging tail. She is easily leashed and pulls mildly down the hall. Charly is taken downstairs to the street. She has a lowered body and is walking slowly looking around, with a lowered tail pressed against her rear. Charly eventually turns around and pulls hard back to the shelter. She is brought to the backyard and placed on a drag leash. Charly runs around the yard, sniffing her surroundings. She is taking treats that are tossed on the ground. Charly approaches another dog sitting by the neighboring pen. She looks towards them with a neutral body and perked ears. Handler keeps her away and redirects her with treats. After sometime, Charly is easily re-leashed and taken back to her crate without issue. 6/26/26: Charly is sitting in the corner of her crate as the handler approaches; they lasso and bring her out the room. Right before going down the steps, Charly baulks. The handler presents her treats, and she eats them with mild pressure; they place a couple treats on the next step, below Charly. Charly slowly inches forward and places one paw on the bottom step to reach it; the handler gently applies leash pressure, and she goes down the first flight of stairs. Charly baulks at the top of the second flight of stairs; the handler repeats the same process and she goes down with ease. On the street, Charly walks with mild leash tension; she doesn't react to passersby. Charly frequently looks back at the handler; when they present their hand, she shies away, but when they show her a treat, Charly approaches and eats it. The handler brings Charly inside for her assessment (see notes); after the assessment, the handler pets Charly, and she leans into it. The handler then brings Charly to her crate; as they clean the crate while holding onto the leash, Charly remains neutral body. After cleaning, Charly walks into her crate, and the handler removes their leash.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Charly is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Charly.

We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Charly is reported by her former owners to be shy and prefers contact on her own terms, she has displayed fearful behavior with staff on intake, during medical exams, and other general interactions. It is important to always go slow and give Charly the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Charly would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Charly is reported by her former owners to be anxious at times. We recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
