Animal Profile

Daba

Hello, my name is Daba. My animal id is #251389. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/6/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Daba is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I have lived with cats in my previous home. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. A volunteer writes: Daba makes an adorable first impression, if not an entirely welcoming one and that's ok. I admired how he stretched his little paw out on his box like he was in mid-knead and he decided to leave it as is. Really, so cute. I said songs could be written about that paw and Daba surreptitiously rolled his eyes and tried to explain that he was busy by pretending to nap. I know very well that snuggles (and compliments) aren't always the way to someone's heart, so I quietly closed Daba's condo door to sit and read for a little bit. The Daba I met before reading and the Daba I met afterwards are almost two different cats. The next time I held my hand out, he nuzzled into me and looked for more pets. This makes a little sense because in his previous home Daba was friendly and outgoing with people and other cats. There are times he likes to take a moment or so to warm up, which we see at the shelter, but we're so sure that after a little time, a lot of patience and love, Daba will become the sparkly young cat he's meant to become.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: Prior assessment 04/09/26: Daba was resting in the den and appeared alert with wide eyes and forward ears. He showed signs of stress, retreating slightly and lip licking, and hissed throughout the assessment. Despite this, he remained curious—hesitantly accepting squeeze-up treats and briefly allowing head pets with the scratcher tool. 4/11/26 Vol. At back of kennel, in litterbox curled up, mostly facing forward, slightly to the side when approached. Hissed when door opened and spoken to. Offered dry treats on scratcher tool. Ignored.  Offered lickable treat on scratcher tool.  Slow approach and close to wall. Ate a little bit. Tensed up and curled up more, head/face lowered and pressed into wall id pet by scratcher tool. Left tray with lickable treats nearby.   4/16/26 Vol. Daba was resting on his side on the floor of the main kennel. No reaction to the opening of the kennel door. Whiskers back, ears up, and he sneezes. Uninterested in puree and his food and crunchy treats are untouched. He remains still while pet by hand on his forehead and down his neck, flinching a little when pet on the cheek. He sneezes, gets up and turns 180° and lies back down, closes his eyes. Seems subdued, possibly ill (noted for medical). 4/17/26 Vol. In main cage, paws tucked, head up, ears front, whiskers a little back, eyes slightly closed. Put in treat bowl, no movement or reaction. Approached with hard treat on scratcher tool, no reaction. Dropped treat and approached with tool, Daba started to lip lick and raised head further to turn away, squeezing eyes shut - allowed head scratches with tool but no reaction when stopped or started. Daba then moved head to sneeze and readjust paws and a few more lip licks. Gave one more head scratch with tool and ended interaction 4/18/26 Allows petting along the head and body with the scratcher tool. Seems under the weather but when showing him the laser light he immediately perked up looking for the light. Ended with offered treats.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Curious,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Daba should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water, either because prior owner notes [stress meowing] or because of behaviors seen at the Care Center [fearful, hissing] strongly suggest that he will hide if allowed. Interact with him in this room until he seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce him to the next part of the home without running the risk that he will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: No young children under 13 years old. Counselor discretion.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Daba was sitting in his cubby, eyes wide and dilated, letting out a hiss as the door opened. When offering him treats, his eyes softened and he leaned forward to lick them up, now returning slow blinks. When attempting to pet along his cheek and head with the scratcher tool, he flinched back at first, but after giving him the rest of the treats, he allowed some of the brief petting. When transitioning to pets along his back, his ears started to flattened as he squirmed a bit. Daba tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
