Chance
Hello, my name is Chance. My animal id is #206224. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 4 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/29/2024.
Chance is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Chance arrived to the care center as a stray with no known history. During his time in care Chance was observed to be social jumping on handlers with a loose wiggly body and unable to be redirected with treats. While in foster, Chance redirected onto a handler after seeing a loose dog. Throughout his stay in the care center Chance has begun to kennel fight intensely with the other dogs in the room. Medically, Chance is apparently healthy.

He is a calm gentleman he likes to lay around and catch the sun rays through the window. He will listen to all your music and never judge you when you're singing out of tune. The best part of the guy is his leash skills. He is very good on a leash. He will wait for the light to change while waiting patiently for you to cross. He won't pull towards birds or squirrels. He will whine if he sees a cat. Maybe he lived with cats before if he could talk you then you could know. Chance is a quiet type who likes to lay around. He is also always game for a game of ball tossing or tug of war and he loves to walk and walk. A volunteer writes: This guy Chance is a very lovely dog. I have taken him out on several occasions. His preference seemed to be to sit with me on the bench and watch the scene. Pros: Very easy going, calm, dignified, sweet and gentle as can be, affectionate, house trained, handsome. Cons: None found Come meet this charmer at Manhattan ACC. My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: Chance is just a gentleman. He carries his size with grace and is so curious - he wanted to meet every person or dog that we passed, greeting everyone with a wiggly body and a wagging tail! He was energetic at the beginning of our time out and got more chill as we went along. He was friendly to everyone we met (and many people stopped to pet him :), and greeted the other dogs with delight. No barking; no jumping. Just sweetness. Hoping this sweetheart finds his forever home soon!

Other Notes:: Chance's foster parent call the emergency line stating he redirected onto them after seeing a loose dog. Chance knocked the foster parent to the ground and began mouthing their head and hands. Chance then bit their right elbow. This bite did not break skin. The foster was able to restrain Chance to stop this behavior. A clarification of the incident was received. The foster parent was walking Chance and they witnessed a loose dog run up to a pedestrian and bite them. The foster began running with Chance to get away from the situation which they were successfully able to do. Chance didn't push her over, the foster stopped abruptly and bent down to tie their shoe which is when Chance started mouthing them (The foster stated that in hindsight they should not have used the word bite, and they knew Chance was not trying to hurt them). The foster believes that Chance become over excited when they started running. First stay 7/29/24: Stray, No known history Previous assessments can be given upon request.

Summary:: 8/13/24: Chance greets another dog at the gate with a tense body and hard eyes. He begins whining as the other dog moves away.
Summary (4):: 12/13/24: Chance is reported to cage fight intensely and tries to pull ahead of handler to get to the other dogs. 12/12/24:Chance is standing at the front of the kennel barking as handler approaches. Chance jumps on the door as handler begins unlocking. He is easily leash and as soon as he exits kennel pulling hard towards the dogs lip licking, handler had to straight arm him out the kennel room. Chance is taken out on a street walk where he jumps persistently on the handler. Chance is redirected with treats and the sit command. Throughout the walk Chance checked in with the handler frequently and did not pull outside. Chance took treats gently and learned to "wait" while sitting. Chance is returned to kennel where he displays the same behavior of when he was exiting handler had to straight arm him and hold him against the wall going back to kennel. 12/1/24: Chance is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins to whine as handler unlocks his kennel door and is distracted with treats while leashing. Once leashed he pulls very hard out of kennel and attempts to cage fight intensely with the dog in the front kennel, he is kept away and brought to the street for a walk. Once outside handler places Chance on a slip lead harness and is walked out the driveway to the street. He uses the bathroom almost as soon as he reaches the street and begins walking alongside handler. He pulls when crossing the street and begins intensely jumping onto and off handler. Handler tosses treats on the ground to redirect Chance which works. He continues walking with handler and does not pull when walking. He walks past people on the street without issue and allows handler to pet him during his walk. He stops and accepts pets around the head/neck area. While petting, two small dogs walk past Chance. Handler stops petting Chance and observes him briefly staring at them but breaking focus without need for redirection by handler. However when spotting a larger dog across the street he stops and stares at the dog for a while. He walks for a while more and finishes using the bathroom before being brought back to the building. When heading back Chance again begins jumping on handler and pulling forward seemingly out of nowhere. He is again redirected with treats and is clipped before being brought back to kennel. When returning he pulls hard and needs to be kept towards the wall away from the kennels.
Summary (5):: 11/18/24- Chance is at the front of his kennel with a wiggly body, he is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He moderately pulls towards various spots to sniff, he walks on a loose leash when not sniffing any spots. Handler calls to him and he focuses on handler, taking treats gently from their hand. There is another dog on the block, Chance looks at them briefly and handler calls to him, he is refocused and given treats. Handler moves between 2 cars and lets other dog pass, Chance watches them pass with a high tail and neutral body. Handler again is able to refocus when calling and reward. When handler waits for a car to pass, another dog, smaller comes walking by. Chance turns and looks at them with an alert body, and starts to whine. Handler applies pressure to leash, he slowly starts to walk keeping an eye on the smaller dog. Once across the sit, Chance stops fixating on the small dog and follows command to sit, he is rewarded again. He is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 11/17/24 (PM): Chance is in the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he begins to whine and paw at the kennel door. Handler leashes him with treats and takes him out to the street for his walk. Chance stops to sniff often and walks alongside handler without pulling at all. Chance does not react to people passing by on the street and passes a dog but does not turn to notice them. Chance uses the bathroom outside and after a bit is brought back to kennel, he pulls hard going back to kennel but returns without issue.
Summary (6):: 11/17/24: An ACS reported that Chance was very mouthy on their morning walk but could be briefly distracted using treats, however during their next walk they reported Chance was jumping at their face with an open mouth, treats were not able to redirect him. 11/8/24: Chance is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed with the help of some treats and is brought out and into the street. Chance pulls hard on his walk and exuberantly jogs forward throughout most of it. He stops often to sniff spots on the street and uses the bathroom when outside. He walks past people without issue but will stop, stare and pull towards dogs he sees outside. Chance is brought back inside after a while and is returned to kennel without issue. 10/29/24: Chance (Jobie) is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body and barking as handler approaches. He is leashed and he pulls very hard as he is taken out to the play yard. He remains neutral throughout the walk, but he continuously marked, and would huff loudly after sniffing a urine spot. He was kept on leash, did not accept pets, and handler did not attempt to pet. He sniffed around his surroundings. When returning to kennel he pulled very hard and was secured without issue. 9/13/24: Chance is laying down on his kuranda bed. He comes forward and has a soft body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and taken out. While walking to the street he starts jumping up exuberantly towards handler with front legs stretched out. Handler is unable to toss treats to redirect him. When on the street he pulls moderately to hard. He relieves himself and at times he will begin to run forward but is stopped. At the end of the walk he walks and pulls mildly and is returned to kennel without issue. 9/11/24: Chance is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed without issue and brought to the play yard. Along the way Chance hops loosely alongside handler occasionally hopping into handler with a loose and wiggly body and wagging tail. Once inside the play yard Chance begins jumping on handler excitedly, handler offers treats and does a sit command with Chance to allow handler to place him on a drag leash. Once placed on drag leash handler sits on bench an Chance follows, accepting treats and pets and remaining loose and wiggly. Chance begins jumping on handler attempting to lick their neck and face excitedly, handler stands and calls Chance over. Chance follows and handler begins playing pattern games with Chance. The first game handler incorporates is "Touch" where Chance touches handlers hand with nose and is given a treat. Chance picks this game up quickly and handler then incorporates "Up Down" on the bench with Chance which he again picks up quickly and enjoys. He takes treats softly and remains focused with handler throughout these games. Handler returns Chance to a slip lead and returns him to kennel without issue.
Summary (7):: 8/31/24: Chance is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. Chance begins barking and jumping up at kennel door as handler begins unlocking to leash. He is leashed without issue and upon exiting kennel pulls hard out the room to the elevator. Chance briefly jumps on handler when inside the elevator but stops and exits the elevator to the street. When on the street Chance walks near handler and does not pull. He uses the bathroom outside and walks past people on the street without issue. After walking for a while Chance is returned to the building and once inside begins pulling hard again. He goes up stairs without issue and begins pulling hard back into kennel, besides that he is returned without further issue. 8/13/24: Chance is laying in his crate when handler approaches. He stands immediately when he notices the handler standing there. Chance readily exits the crate and pulls moderately to the playyard. When outside he relieves himself immediately. He is taken to greet another dog at the gate. He becomes tense and hard barked at them with raised hackles. After reacting to the dog Chance turns and jumps up on the handler whining and vocalizing. Chance readily returns to his crate. 7/31/24: Chance is laying in the kennel when the handler approaches. He comes forwards with a soft body, wagging tail, and stretches. He is leashed using a treat lure and whines as the handler gets him out of the kennel. He is taken for a street walk where he pulls moderately, does not react to people or dogs, and takes treats. He relieves himself on the street and sniffs frequently. He is taken for his assessment where he is exuberantly social, wiggly, jumps up socially, allows all handling, and continues to take treats. He is jumpy as the handler releashes him and whines sporadically. On return to kennel he hesitates slightly but enters with light directional leash pressure.
Date of initial:: 10/28/2024
Summary:: Allowed all handling, wagging tail
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Chance so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to social hyperarousal we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Chance has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Social Hyperarousal: Chance has been observed to being over aroused with handlers, especially when running with them. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Chance to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. Chance should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping up on handlers, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Chance. Please see handout on Arousal. On Leash Reactivity: Chance has been observed to pull hard towards the other dogs in the kennel room. Chance will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
