Prosecco
Hello, my name is Prosecco. My animal id is #238102. I am a male gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/30/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.
Prosecco is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have lived with cats in my previous home. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Prosecco tolerates attention and some petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Prosecco was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. He lived in a home with 30+ cats. Upon intake, Prosecco allowed all handling.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/3/25 PREVIOUS ASSESSMENT: Prosecco was hiding in the den crouched down with a neutral body and wide eyes. When reaching close to offer treats, he steps back and ignores them. He lip licks when pet on the head and he remains calm when receiving cheek rubs and stroking his body but does not engage with the attention. When applying gentle upward pressure on his side and chest, lifting him up to the ceiling of the den, and he tenses up. After placing him back down, he continues to tolerate more petting and cheek rubs but lip licks again. 10/19/25 FB73 Prosecco is in his cubby, ears back, pupils dilated, and hissing repeatedly as I approach. Kennel door is opened, and he begins to spit and hiss, ears still back. I attempt to give him a squeeze up on the scratcher tool and he swats it hard, beginning to low growl. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS. 10/19/25 Vol. In cubby. Hissed, lying down tail wrapped around. Offered dry treats on scratcher tool approached from perch. Left treats nearby. And near portal opening. Looking forward, ppft sounds if approached with scratcher tool. Licked lips. Offered squeeze up and left on perch. When approached with scratcher tool in cubby, went onto perch. Licking lips. Crouched position on perch, occasional hiss. Left tray with small amount of soup. Left felt patch sprayed with Feliway. 10/21/25 FB47 In the back of the cubby with head down, ears diagonally forward. When approached he pulled back and his ears went more sideways. I gave treats. 10/22/25 FB20 Sitting in back of his cubby. Hissed at clicker with Squeeze-ups and then just sat there hissing with flattened ears. Backed away from cat dancer and laser toy. Did enjoy eating tuna added to his food. Still fearful. 10/24/25 Vol. In cubby, crouched close to front - eyes large, face set. Put treat bowl by cubby entry - he came to look out entry, staring. Approached with hard treats on scratcher tool - he pulled back into cubby. Opened cubby - Prosecco pulled to the back wall, erect, ears flattened, eyes narrow. Sweet talked and ended interaction. He came out of cubby to eat treats. 10/25/25 Vol. In the cubby when approached and spoken to. Hissed when cubby door opened. Then blinked at me. Offered dry treats left them in front of him and on perch. Came onto perch. Offered squeeze up on scratcher tool. Ignored. Left more dry treats and a tray with lickable treat on perch. Closed door. Came onto perch to eat lickable treat. Approached with scratcher tool to pet but will either lean away or walk along the perch to the front. Closed door again. End of interaction. -----CONTINUED IN GAN-----
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Prosecco is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, she does attempt to flee and avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization, but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
Recommendations comments:: No children under 13 due to observed behavior (see behavior summary for further information).
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Prosecco was in his cubby, with airplane ears, dilated pupils, and crouching low. When the assessor approaches the cubby door, he spits, low growls, hisses, and lunges. Treats are offered which he does not respond to. Petting is attempted with the scratcher tool and he is able to be briefly pet on the head and shoulders before he head whips and dodges away to avoid contact, swatting and hissing at the scratcher tool. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS. Prosecco tolerates attention and some petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children.
