Daisy
Hello, my name is Daisy. My animal id is #221587. I am a desexed female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/2/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormDaisy is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. When she first arrived at the care center, Daisy would remain tense and hard stare towards handlers during interactions. This type of behavior is reported by her previous owner as well, reporting that she will hard bark and growl at strangers. Daisy has since warmed up to staff, seeking petting at times and greeting with a soft body and wagging tail. Medically, Daisy has allergies but is overall healthy.

Date of assessment:: 3/6/2025
Summary:: Daisy arrived at MACC as an owner surrender. During intake Daisy was observed to hard stare towards handlers with a tense body. Throughout her stay in the care center Daisy is noted to have a stiff body and high flagging tail. When a handler attempts to clip their leash Daisy head whips towards them. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time.
Summary:: 3/12/25: Daisy greet another dog at the gate with a loose and wiggly body. She jumps up onto the fence to greet handler remaining soft and wiggly.
Summary (7):: 3/30/25: When returning the room, Daisy approached an unfamiliar person with a wiggly body. She jumped on to the person to solicit pets and the person gave her pets on her head. Daisy’s body quickly tensed up and she barked at the person. The handler pulled Daisy away immediately after her reaction. 3/27/25: Daisy is laying down at the front of kennel with a neutral body and soft eyes. She is easily leashed and taken outside for a walk. She remains aloof and soft bodied throughout walk, occasionally checking in with handler. She flinches and retreats quickly when she hears a loud sound, but she's easily coaxed with baby voice. Daisy remains alert throughout walk, and rarely responds to toys and treats. Daisy sniffs around her surroundings and relieves herself. She is returned to care centers without issue. 3/12/25: It is reported on the behavior board that while out in the yard with a staff member, Daisy was playful and allowed for and sought petting. 3/11/25: Daisy is observed to hard bark bark at people while they pass by the driveway. Daisy was not receptive to treats, however she was able to be distracted when the handler used a squeaker. 3/3/2025: Daisy is standing in the middle of her kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. She slightly stiffens and is hard staring as handler opens the door. She does not come forward for treats, but takes a step forward using baby voice. She is double leashed and removed from kennel. In the pen she remains neutral bodied, occasionally flagging with her tail. She becomes stiff and stares at the neighboring dog, handlers keep her away from fence. Treats are tossed and she eats them off the ground. As she is returned, handler goes to clip her but Daisy head-whips towards handlers hand. Handler aborts and returns her to kennel without pre-clipping. A hook was used to remove the leashes. 3/3/25: Vet staff report that Daisy attempted to bite them "Hard" when going down during sedation. 3/2/25: K9 behavior was asked to assist in bringing in Daisy. Daisy is hard barking and growling with a tense body when handlers approach. Handlers give the leashes to the owner and they are able to place them on her easily. The leashes are handed back to the handlers and they begin coaxing Daisy forward. Daisy rushes towards the secondary handler with a tense body and hard stares at them. The primary handler keeps her away with a short leash. Handlers continue to coax Daisy and she continues walking with a tense body. When handlers reach the kennel Daisy freezes, handlers use leash pressure to guide her into kennel.

We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Daisy.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Daisy's previous owner states that she will hard bark, growl, lunge, and bare teeth toward strangers. During her stay in the care center Daisy has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to have a tense body and head whip towards handlers when they attempt to clip their leash. During her medical exam Daisy was observed to attempt to bite handlers. It is important to move slowly with Daisy, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
