What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary (5):: 1/27/26: Mr. Bando is observed to bang on the transfer door. 1/27/26: ACS report that Mr. Bando is banging on the transfer door. 1/26/26: Mr. Bando is at the front of the kennel hark barking and air snapping when the handler approaches. He is also observed to press his face against the kennel bars towards his neighboring dog while hard barking. As the handler unlocks the kennel door Bando jumps up on the kennel door while barking loudly. He bites at the lock when the handler tries to place it on his door. The handler attempts to leash Bando using treats. He is mildly interested, but quickly begins biting and tugging the leash into kennel. On the second attempt the handler uses spray cheese. Bando is highly receptive however once he sees the leash he jumps up and snaps at it. He then begins biting and tugging the leash into kennel. On the third attempt the handler is able to leash Bando. When on the street Bando pulls moderately and relieves himself quickly. He does not react to people. When returning to kennel Bando begin pulling very hard towards the dog in the first kennel before he even enters the kennel room. The handler has to straight arm him to keep Bando away. The handler tosses treats into kennel however, Bando is not receptive. He continues to attempt to cage fight with the neighboring dog. The handler has to muscle Bando into kennel.
Summary (6):: 1/23/26: Mr.Bando is at the front of his kennel with dilated pupils, a tense body, and hard barking towards the handler upon approach. Handler begins to unlock his kennel, and he jumps onto the bars with his front paws, continuing to bark towards handler. As handler attempts to leash him, Mr.Bando pulls the leash in and begins to tug on it while growling. Handler attempts to use a treat and different sounds to redirect his attention, which doesn't work. Handler then tugs the rope out of Bando's mouth, which he releases, and the handler is able to receive their rope back. Handler then uses a copious amount of spray cheese on the bars, which he would continue to lick and allow the handler to easily leash him. As he's removed from his kennel, he would begin to intensely kennel fight with the neighboring dog. While he is kennel fighting, he is air-snapping and pulling very hard towards the neighboring kennels. Handler has to muscle Bando away from their ankle due to his mouth being very close. Mr.Bando would then begin to kennel fight with the hallway pop-ups and is kept on a very short and tight leash as they wait for the elevator. Once Mr.Bando is taken to the driveway, he is taken out for a street walk, where he would remain neutral-bodied and a mild pull ahead of the handler. He would relieve himself in multiple spots and would continue the walk with ease. Handler then begins to return him back to the shelter; he is then clipped in the elevator and is then returned back to his kennel while handler keeps him on a short and tight leash, as he would attempt to kennel fight again. Handler is able to safely remove the leash, and the interaction was then ended. 1/22/26: Reported on the behavior board that Mr. Bando redirected onto his handlers knee. Upon further investigation, Mr. Bando lunged toward pop up crates by elevator, catching the leg of an ACS, leaving bruising but no broken skin. 1/22/26: Reported on behavior board that Mr. Bando was leashed with the help of treats, was easy to walk on the street, and was soliciting physical touch from his handler. 1/22/26: Reported on behavior board to be leash biting when being leashed. 1/17/26 (Playgroup): Mr. Bando is at the front of his kennel barking. The handler uses a squeaker and leashes him. As they walk Bando out, the handler tosses treats in the ground; Bando eats some of it, but he begins to pull towards the remaining kennels while exiting. When waiting for the elevator, he jumps on the handler and solicits pets. Bando is then brought to the yard for playgroup (see dog-dog notes). In between interactions, he sniffs around and relieves; he also allows pets from the other handlers. Afterwards, the handler brings Bando inside. While walking him in, he looks at the kennels and pulls hard, but enters his kennel with ease. 1/16/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Mr. Bando is kennel reactive, "might try to redirect"
Summary (7):: 1/6/25 (Assessment Walks): Mr. Bando is at the front of his kennel with a soft body. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Bando walks ahead with little to no leash tension. A few times, he looks back at the handler and jumps on them with a soft, wiggly body, and softly takes treats from them. Mr. Bando also shows no interest in passersby and dogs. He is then brought in for his assessment (see assessment notes); afterwards, the handler returns Mr. Bando to his kennel with ease. 1/4/26- Mr. Bando is at the front of his kennel with a soft body, he gently takes treat through his door. He is easily leashed and taken to the play yard. He sniffs around the pen and sniff at toys. He relieves himself, he is aloof with handler at first. They present treats which he takes with moderate pressure and handler gives them to him with an open palm. He sees another dog in a neighboring pen, he just looks at them with a neutral body. Handler presents treats in front of him and he follows them. Handler lightly scratches his back, he aches his back and tenses with a tucked tail. Handler stops petting him. He relieves himself and walks around the pen sniffing. He is walked around the perimeter of the yard, a small dog on the other side of the fence hard barks at him. He has no reaction and just stares in the general direction with a neutral body. Handler calls to him and he follows. He follows the command to sit and he slowly gives paw. He then jumps on handler with a soft body, soliciting pets. He allows handler to scratch his head, neck and his back. He jumps down, is given treats and walks with a loose and wiggly body. He is easily clipped, at his kennel he plants momentarily. Handler tosses in treats and he jumps into kennel without further issue. 1/3/26: Mr Bando is sitting at the front of the kennel soft body and wagging tail. He jumps on the door twice as handler unlocks it and is leashed using treats as a lure. Once out he pulls to the yard where he remains soft bodied. He is hypervigilant not stopping to sniff or explore. He will turn to handler when called and gently jumps up at one point seeking attention. He is lured down with treats. A second handler is present and he will turn to them as the walk behind him. He is easily called away by main handler. He stands outside his kennel and pulls away. He does not follow treats in. Handle muscles him into kennel. HE sits at the front whining as handler locks the door

ENERGY LEVEL:: Mr. Bando is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Mr. Bando.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and handling sensitivity we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: During his medical exam Mr. Bando was obsvered to become tense when food was presented. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Mr. Bando's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Mr. Bando's previous owner states that he will jump non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: Mr. Bando's previous owner states that he is mouthy with treats. Mr. Bando has been observed to take treats with a hard mouth. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach DOG to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Handling Sensitivity: Mr. Bando was obsvered to growl during his medical exam while tasks were occurring. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Mr. Bando to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Mr. Bando's previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl at strangers. It is important to move slowly with Mr. Bando, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Separation Anxiety: Mr. Bando's previous owner states that he will become anxious when left alone. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Mr. Bando's previous owner states that he reacts to other dogs outside. However, they did not specify the reaction besides stating that he will growl at dogs that react towards him and may lunge in a "curious" manner. Mr. Bando will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Mr. Bando is obsvered to bite the leash when handlers are attempting to leash him. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
