Animal Profile

Anubis

Hello, my name is Anubis. My animal id is #221240. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 months 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/12/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Anubis is at risk due to behavioral reasons. While out with handlers Anubis has been observed to have a loose and wiggly body and will offer a sit for treats. Despite our best efforts at making him comfortable Anubis has been showing high levels of stress while in kennel. He has been observed to stred his linens, jump up high, scale the kennel door while bouncing off and spinning in kennel. He is also observed to be hard barking and heavily panting while jumping. Medically Anubis has a fractured tooth and is underweight.

A Volunteer Wrote: Anubis is the MOST beautiful, MOST tender-hearted smoosh-face who is so very, very scared to find himself in the shelter-and was likely scared before he found himself here, judging from his worried demeaner. However-and here is where you can save the day, and a life, and make yours so much better in one fell swoop: He adores people. The second his walker took him out to the back and sat, Anubis was pressed up against him, so eager for affection and love, burying his head in his arms and then gazing up with what sure looked like gratitude. Please, won't you show Anubis what a beautiful life might look like? What a gift to you both!

Summary (6):: 4/23/25: Anubis has been observed to bark loudly in kennel then to jump up high, push off the top of the kennel door and then spin and land in his kennel. This behaviors occurs rapidly and repeatedly. 4/21/25: Anubis is observed t be hard barking, heavy panting, and jumping up very high in his kennel. 04/20/25: Anubis is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats which he gently accepts, he is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the street for his walk. During Anubis' walk he stays near handler and walks on a loose leash. He passes people on the street without issue and when seeing dogs from across the street or when passing them, he will stop and briefly stare at them. He is redirected when called and offered treats. Anubis responds to handler when offered treats and checks in with handler throughout his walk. Anubis uses the bathroom outside and will stop at times to sniff spots on the street. Anubis is walked for a bit more before being brought back to the shelter. He follows treats back to kennel and enters without issue. 4/13/25: Anubis is observed to jump up almost to the top of the kennel, and proceeds to attempt and scale/climb the kennel door whilst bouncing off and spinning towards the back of kennel. Summary (7):: 4/5/25: Anubis is jumping and barking at his kennel door as handler approaches. The handler is able to distract him with treats to be leashed. He is then taken downstairs for a walk outside. On the walk, he would prance ahead with a loose wiggly body and wagging tail. He would sit in front of the handler to receive treats. He would look at dogs that were across the street, and is able to be redirected with a squeaky toy sound and treats. On the way back to his kennel, he was hesitant to go up the stairs, and was able to be guided with a few treats. Once he was up the stairs, he walks back to kennel with no issue. 4/4/25: Anubis is observed to refuse to go back into his kennel by stopping in front of his kennel room and pulling backwards. When handler gets him inside, he bolts back out of his kennel. The handler is able to get him in again and quickly close the door. He then begins to jump up and bark at the door as the handler unleashes him and fully locks the door and walks away. Handler reports that he gives no issues while on the walk. 3/29/25: Anubis is jumping and barking at her kennel door as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease and walked slowly on the way downstairs for a walk. On the walk, she would walk slowly next to the handler with a tense body frame and low tail. She would continuously stop walking to look behind her when she heard other people walking on the same block behind her from a distance. She had no reaction to anything and continued to walk slowly next to the handler as she looked around. She is able to return back to her kennel with no issues. 3/13/25: Anubis is at the front of his kennel laying down as handler approaches. He is offered multiple treats and is presented the leash to sniff, handler then begins slowly leashing. He allows leashing after a slow approach and walks out of kennel to the street. He walks with a tucked tail and does not pull while outside, he also accepts treats gently from handler while walking. He stops to sniff occasionally and use the bathroom. Anubis does not react to people or dogs he sees while outside and is subsequently brought to the behavior office after his walk. He enters the room for his assessment, tail still tucked and no longer accepting treats. He allows collaring and leashing without issue and leans his head into handlers lap when pet. He is brought back to kennel once finished with his assessment and stops at the front. He is tossed treats and further approaches but needs slight pressure to fully enter kennel. Interaction is ended when handler returns Anubis.

Date of intake:: 3/12/2025

Summary:: Tucked tail

Date of initial:: 3/12/2025

Summary:: Tense but allows handling with slow approach

ENERGY LEVEL:: Anubis is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Anubis.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to resource guarding, and fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. Recommend no dog parks: Due to hard barking, growling, and lunging towards unfamiliar dogs, we recommend no trips to the dog park.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Anubis' previous owners state that he will very rarely have accidents in the home. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Resource Guarding: Anubis' previous owners state that he will become tense and hover over toys, food, and treats that are in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Anubis' mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Anubis' previous owners state that he will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: Anubis' previous owners state that he will hard bark and growl towards strangers. During his stay in the care center Anubis has also been observed to be fearful. Noted to have a tense body and tucked tail. It is important to move slowly with Anubis, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression Separation Anxiety: Anubis' previous owners state that he will become anxious when left alone. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Anubis' previous owners state that he will hard bark, growl, and lunge towards dogs while on leash. They also state he will bare teeth, lift his lip, lunge, growl, and hard bark towards strangers that approach. Anubis will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
