Lulu is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and will stay by the front and tries to swat at people and neighboring cats if she sees them. We believe this behavior is due to frustration, and due to her stress levels, she would benefit from getting out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

I lived with children in my previous home. I have been known to shower my favorite people in love! I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. Please check here for updated adoption hours. What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm a playful and cute lady who also enjoys her alone time. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I can be found napping and lounging around in my favorite spot; so if you invade my personal space, I'll show you who's boss...respectfully of course! My favorite pastime is eating, but my doctors said I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy. Will you be my new playmate?

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 5. Red
Upon intake, Lulu had tense body language. She did not want to come out of the carrier at first and wasn't interested in treats. After some time I moved her carrier's position and she decided to walk out and explore. I allowed her time and placed my hand so she could smell me if she wanted to. After awhile she decided she wanted to be pet on the head and down her spine. She allowed me to collar easily as well. I offered her a chicken flavored squeezer and she began to hiss at my hand then at me. I moved the food away and then placed the carrier which she willingly walked into. Unable to scan for MC due to hissing towards the end.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/8/22 On top of den asleep but wakes up, stares past me with normal sized pupils, follows the laser really well as I play it on the plastic shield of his kennel. Then he sniffs the scratcher tool, and allows brief petting before raising a paw and finally hissing once. 12/12/22 Screechy at the front, sniffs handle of scratcher tool, sniffs treats and allows touch on the head with the tool. Made to swat another staffer though the door after I had stepped aside. 12/13/22 Sitting up at front kennel, when opening the door, she climbs on the door and steps off after closing the door. I wait for her to calm down and open the door again. She sniffs treats offered on the tool and allows brief petting, but gets easily agitated and respectfully nips the tool when pet, then pushes the tool away with her paw. Frequently observed to hiss and reach her paw though the door to grab on people's arms passing by. 12/16/22 Resting by the front upon approach. Alert with neutral eyes. While opening the kennel door he sat upright looking around. He sniffed the scratcher tool and briefly accepted pets along the head followed by a hiss. He ate offered treats and seemed to be conflicted slightly head bunting the tool throughout the interaction. However, he continued to be wary with his surroundings and lifted paw to slowly swat at the tool. 12/19/22 She was surprisingly tolerant of petting and attention, maybe because she was distracted and looking through the door entrance of the cat holding room. Recorded video and she was head bunting for petting, calm and unbothered when receiving cheek rubs, and flicking tail when stroking her back. Despite how nice she was in the video, about an hour before recording, Lulu reached her paw through the door and swatted at my face, scratching my mask, when I was at ground level boxing up cat for transport in the kennel below. Lulu is frequently reported to reach and swat at staff passing by her kennel. 12/22/22 At front of kennel sitting up, focused on me with neutral body and eyes. Sniffs treats offered and my hand. Allows a brief pet on the hand but quickly short-stress meows and swats at my hand, does not scratch or make a mark. Displays softer body language but still conflicted with attention. 12/28/22 Approaches the front and seeks attention (rubs on the door when coaxed), but quickly swats if I move too quickly or if there is stimuli in the room. He seems to do well when the environment is calm but is quick to escalate when he feels uncomfortable. Still treat motivated but needs someone who understands his behavior and is willing to go slow with him.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Sweet,Playful,Curious,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Lulu was lying on top of the den, resting. She briefly looks up at the assessor when coaxed, but lowers her gaze afterwards and growls. She becomes alert when the door opens and sits upright, tense, but will sniff the scratcher tool when slowly extended. She shows interest in treats offered but takes a moment to eat, focusing on the assessor at times. She growls when the scratcher tool extends again to offer treats but she eats them, and then allows brief petting on the head and cheeks. She hisses once while being pet, but continues to tolerate it as long as the assessor is slow and gentle. She may need more time to adjust. Lulu tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She will likely need time to warm up to her new home and family. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
