Animal Profile

Domino

Hello, my name is Domino. My animal id is #158751. I am a desexed female black cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 10 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/18/2022, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Domino is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She spends most of her time hiding inside her den and will swat hard to increase distance and keep staff away. She will only eat some treats when given space but other times will not eat at all. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. My favorite pastime is being visually admired! Pet me with your eyes! I am playful and cute! A staff member writes: "Domino is such a cute girl with a sweet face, but we believe she hasn't had much experience with humans outside of her previous family. She was reported to be fearful and defensive with strangers, escalating to hissing and biting. She may re-direct onto the nearest thing due to fear. She will need someone patient who will work with her and help her develop a positive association with new people. The shelter environment makes it really hard for staff to do this. She will sometimes accept squeeze ups (a kitty treat) if you give her space but other times is too nervous and wary to eat. If you consider yourself a kitty whisperer and don't mind allowing a cat to warm up at her own pace, would you consider helping this little girl?"

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/20/22 Inside den, completely hidden from view. I tried coaxing, making purring sounds, and shining a light inside but she remains frozen. Unsure if she is sleeping, but I place treats inside and there is no movements. Didn't want to startle her awake if she is resting so I just sprayed feliway and left alone. 11/22/22 In den completely hidden from view but pokes her nose out when I offer her chicken but doesn't eat it and hisses before she backs up into the den. I leave the chicken for her and spray some feliway. 11/27/22 Lying in cat den upon approach, body and face initially hidden from view. I am unable to coax her out with treats and she does not respond when spoken to softly. I leave her some treats through the den's peepholes and end the session. 12/01/22 Lying in cat den upon approach, body and face hidden initially. She hisses and swats her den when I open the kennel door to speak to her and I leave her some treats to try and coax her out. She pokes her head out halfway to watch me when I leave more treats but she won't eat them as I'm watching. She pokes her head out all the way to sniff the catnip toy offered, and she freezes to stare at me as I speak to her softly and slow-blink. I end the session at this point so she can enjoy her toy. Will continue to try to build positive associations. 12/2/22 In den, pokes head out with pupils dilated and ears forward. She watches me and hisses and as I lightly toss treats into her cage she watches with a tense face and hisses occasionally and does not eat any of the treats. She goes back into her den after. 12/04/22 Hiding in cat den upon approach, body and face initially hidden from view. She pokes her head out when offered some treaties, and although she won't eat them as I'm watching, she does curiously keep her head out of her den and continues to watch me for the duration of our session. I slow-blink and speak to her softly before ending the session with a catnip toy. She grumbles and returns slow-blinks. 12/5/22 Becomes alert when cage cover is lifted and will hiss and swat the front of the den really hard. She continues to hiss and strike several times when seeing the scratcher but I don't remove it because I don't want to reinforce the behavior. She will swat it when I slowly place it by the opening as well, but eventually goes to sniff it. When she did, I removed it and offered squeeze ups. She still seems wary of it and does not eat in my presence so I gave her some space, but she doesn't and presses against the far end of the den. 12/06/22 Lying in cat den upon approach, initially completely hidden from view. I lift the towel covering her den opening and she begins hissing at me with dilated pupils and a tense expression. I place some treaties into her den & some outside of it to see if I can lure her out. I walk away & when I stepped back to her cage her head is poking out of her den. I speak to her softly and slow-blink before ending the session.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Playful,Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: New home adjustment period,Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Domino is reported to be fearful and not do well with new people/ strangers. She can become defensive and attempt to scratch or bite.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Domino is hiding in her den, and begins to low growl as she feels the assessor begin to approach and hisses when they stand at the front of the cage. When the scratcher tool is introduced and slowly moved closer to the opening of the den, she lunges forward towards the opening and swats hard at the tool while hissing and rips the glove on the tool. The assessor tries one more time and she repeats this behavior and lunges from inside the den towards the front of the cage and the assessor. The assessor ends the interaction due to the level of FAS. During her re-assessment, Domino displayed similar NHO behaviors. However, during her stay in the care center at this time she has begun to show more curious and potentially social behaviors. Domino will step towards the assessor with her ears forward while vocalizing softly, and when spoken to she will rub her cheeks on her kennel and continue to meow. Domino tolerates touch with the scratcher tool briefly before hissing, retreating on her den with her tail raised and swatting the tool. Domino is currently displaying some conflicted behavior at this time. Domino is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat and scratch and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment. she does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. She she has a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
