Nutella
Hello, my name is Nutella. My animal id is #226671. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 5/8/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormNutella is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Nutella arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During her stay at the care center, she has displayed a tense body, tucked tail and lip licking with staff and volunteers. She has escalated to muzzle punching handler's hands. Nutella has been observed to become tense with raised hackles when seeing another dog. She has a bite incident of lunging and bite and release of a person's leg as she was walking by them with no broken skin. She was also observed to snarl, hard bark and lunge at a cart and the person pulling the cart. Staff have reported she is treat motivated with handlers. Medically Nutella is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Nutella so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Nutella was observed to be fearful during handling. Noted to have a tense body, tucked tail and lip licking. During her stay at the care center Nutella has escalated to muzzle punching handlers hands. It is important to move slowly with Nutella, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Nutella has been observed to become tense with raised hackles when seeing another dog. During one instance Nutella was observed to lunge and bite a person on the leg as she was walking by. This bite did not break skin. Nutella will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
