Noir
Hello, my name is Noir . My animal id is #207482. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/13/2024.

Noir is at risk due to deterioration from length of stay. Despite attempts to keep Noir comfortable, he has displayed chronic kennel stress and anxiety, hypervigilance, inability to focus, panting heavily, mouthiness, jumping incessantly, with a flushed face and dilated pupils. He has begun to hypersalivate, soaking his chin and neck in saliva. Noir has demonstrated on-leash reactivity towards small dogs, barking and lunging and has been noted to hover over toys. He allows contact from staff and engages readily with enrichment items. Medically, Noir is apparently healthy.

He sleeps adorable curled up in his kennel, waiting for his turn outside. Once he gets outside, he's all about making the most of it - Noir is all about fun. He finds himself a basketball and trots down the street with it in his mouth, delighted at his new found prize. Noir was found as a stray near JFK airport. Perhaps he was trying to hop on a plane to plan a vacation, but he never made it there and instead is waiting in Queens. We really don't know anything else about his life before, but Noir would love a comfy, relaxing home where he can decompress from his shelter stress and feel loved and safe. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home.

Summary:: Due to Noir entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 09/30/24 Noir is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Noir doesn't greet the novel female dog, Noir lunges at the gate in which she is behind, snaping and snarling. Noir is moved away and taken back to kennel.
Summary (4):: 11/08/24 (Trainer Note): Noir is standing at the front of his kennel door with a neutral body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls hard to the canine training room. He allows the handler to place a drag leash and explores the room with a neutral body. He engages readily with the various enrichment items and responds to the "sit" cue. Noir picks up toys and runs around the room with them. He begins to become aroused, panting with a flush around his eyes. Handler redirects him back onto the enrichment and he settles some before returning to kennel without issue.
Summary (5):: 11/01/24: Noir is standing at the front of his kennel door panting as the handler approaches. He begins to jump repeatedly onto the kennel door. The handler attempts to lure him down with treats but he shows no interest. Handler is able to leash him and he pulls hard to the canine training room. Noir allows the handler to attach a drag leash. His neck and chest are soaked in saliva. Noir begins to run frenetically around the room, occasionally pausing to interact with the various enrichment items. He picks up a snuffle mat and begins to run around the room with it, pausing regularly to shake it or throw it into the air. He eventually ceases, panting heavily, and begins to engage in the enrichment items. Handler places a lick mat that Noir intently engages with. He apparently relaxes, releasing tension from his musculature, but returns to throwing and shaking the snuffle mat once he moves away from the lick mat. He then engages in the enrichment again, but when the handler attempts to leash him, he grabs up the snuffle mat a third time. Handler is eventually able to lure him away from the mat and onto a different enrichment item. Handler leashes him and removes the drag leash. Noir then walks over to the lick mat and engages with it with intent, leaning away from pressure when the handler attempts to move him away. Handler allows him to engage and Noir eventually lays down as he continues licking. He eventually moves away from the mat and is walked back to kennel without issue. 11/01/24: Noir is observed to be covered in saliva, panting heavily in kennel while jumping on his kennel door. 10/26/24: Noir is standing at the front of the kennel door panting with dilated pupils and a flushed face. He pulls hard to the canine training room. Noir has difficulty focusing on the enrichment items, running around the room and attempting to jump up onto handlers and surfaces. He improves over time, decreasing the intensity of his panting and engaging for longer periods in the enrichment items. He pulls hard back to kennel. 10/17/24: Noir is standing at the front of the kennel panting with dilated pupils and a flushed face. As he notices the handler, he begins jumping repeatedly up onto the kennel door. He pulls hard to the canine live room where he engages readily in the various enrichment items. Noir relaxes visibly, releasing tension and able to momentarily cease panting. Handler reinforces him for taking deep breaths and Noir engages for a few moments before walking away. He begins attempting to shred the soft bed present in the room. Handler picks up the leash and moves him away but Noir continues to lunge back towards it, beginning to pant heavily again. He pulls hard back to kennel but enters without issue.
Summary (6):: 10/13/24: Noir is standing at the front of kennel with a loose body as handler approaches. He jumps up excitedly as handler unlocks the kennel door. Handler tosses treats to redirect him away from the door and he is leashed with ease. Noir pulls moderately out to the street for a walk. He relieves himself in a grass patch and slows his pace, walking slightly ahead of handler. Noir takes treats roughly from hand so handler will toss them to him instead. Noir maintains a neutral frame throughout his walk and will spend time marking along the sidewalk. He is walked back to Care Center and returns to kennel safely. 10/10/23: Noir is sitting in his kennel as the handler approaches. He comes to the front and is easily leashed. Noir pulls moderately to the canine training room. Handler attempts to engage him in the LATTE enrichment items but Noir is unable to focus, attempting to lunge for the other handlers and the toy chest. He seeks out a toy and lays down to chew on it. Handler allows him to chew for a few minutes before returning him to kennel and offering him the toy. 10/04/24: Noir is at the front of his kennel panting as the handler approaches. He attempts to push out past the handler, but handler prevents him. He is leashed and pulls moderately to the canine behavior office. He walks frenetically back and forth. Handler places him on a drag leash and he moves rapidly around the room, panting heavily with wide, red eyes. Noir engages with the enrichment items and his panting decreases slightly. He is easily re-leashed, but jumps repeatedly up onto the handler as they attempt to clip his leash. Another handler makes a sound and Noir is distracted. Handler clips the leash and Noir pulls moderately back to kennel, moving back and forth. He balks in front of the kennel, but enters when the handler throws a handful of treats in. 9/29/24 Noir is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. Noir is still, waiting patiently to be leashed. Noir is leashed and taken for a walk. Noir will display a still, neutral body as he trots moderately beside the hander as they exit the building. Upon exiting the building, Noir will begin to pull on lead. Noir appears anxious, hyper-vigilant of his surroundings, while panting excessively. Noir will catch treats as they are tossed. Noir and the handler will commence their walk as Noir continues to pull. Noir is returned to the facility where he enters the building quickly. While walking through small dog adoptions, Noir will muzzle punch a kennel as they begin reacting to him. Noir is easily redirected will a name call, and they proceed to Noir kennel. Noir enters his kennel with no issue.
Summary (7):: 09/27/24: Noir is standing at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the canine behavior office. Noir allows the handler to clip the drag leash and engages readily with the various enrichment items. Noir visibly relaxes as he does so. He is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 09/01/24: Noir is initially lying down in his kennel, displaying a relaxed posture. When handler approaches, he slowly rises and walks to the front of the kennel, showing no signs of stress as he is easily leashed. Once outside, Noir will hard pull but maintains a neutral body posture, walking calmly on a loose leash with the handler. However, while walking uphill, Noir becomes alarmed by the bark of a small dog across the street. His demeanor changes as he becomes reactive, hyper-focusing on the small dog and pulling in its direction. As handler, recognizing this shift in behavior, he walks further down, then takes a seat on a ledge by the cemetery gate. Noir responds by seeking proximity, sitting underneath the handler’s legs and pressing his back into the handler’s body, displaying a need for reassurance. As he settles, the handler rewards him by scattering treats on the ground, which Noir gently collects. After this, Noir is calmly escorted back to the care center and returned to his kennel without issues. 08/20/2024: Noir is standing in the middle of the kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches. He was easily leashed and pulled hard towards the BA room. He sniffed around the room first and urinated in a couple spots before becoming interested in the enrichment laid out in the room. He started to engage with the snuffle matt and maintained a neutral body with a relaxed tail as he ate. He did not approach handlers and he was kept on a kennel rope since it was handlers first time interacting with him. He was brought back to kennel with ease , walked right into his kennel. 08/14/24: Noir is standing at the front of his kennel upon handler's arrival and will be leashed with ease. Noir will be brought to the assessment room where a drag leash will be placed on him and he's free to roam the room. Noir will play with soft toys, mouth handler's arm, and will hard/demand bark when handler is trying to take a picture. Noir will settle down with a toy laying down and chew on his soft toy, and will hard bark when secondary handlers comes into the room. Noir is brought back to his kennel safely.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Noir behavior challenges we recommend he is placed in an adult-only home at this time. SINGLE-PET HOME/RECOMMEND NO DOG PARKS: Due to Noir's dog-reactivity displayed in care, we recommend he is the only pet in the home along with avoiding all dog parks.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding- During the assessment Noir began to hover and bite the dummy hand. It is essential to work on desensitizing him to having his possessions handled by using techniques like trading up for higher-value items and practicing "drop it" and "leave it". Please see handout on Resource guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control- To address Noirs excessive jumping and improve his impulse control, it's essential to teach him basic manners. Begin by consistently teaching commands like "sit" and "stay" using high-value treats as rewards. Encourage Noir to sit and stay calmly before receiving attention, treats, or toys. When he jumps, turn away and ignore him until he has all four paws on the ground, then immediately reward him for the desired behavior. Consistency is key, so ensure all family members respond to jumping in the same way to prevent mixed signals. Rewarding calm behavior and reinforcing these commands in various settings will help Noir learn to control his impulses effectively. Please the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition- To reduce Noirs mouthy behavior and improve his bite inhibition, redirect his attention to appropriate chew toys whenever he becomes mouthy. Encourage him to play with toys instead of mouthing people. If he does mouth a person, let out a high-pitched "ouch" and briefly stop interaction to signal that mouthing is not acceptable. Over time, he will learn that gentle interactions are more rewarding. Reinforce gentle behavior with treats and praise, and consistently practice these techniques to help Noir develop better bite inhibition and reduce mouthiness. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition Anxiety- Noir began to display heavy panting, whining and barking during his assessment. Managing his anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety. Low threshold for arousal- Noir has a low threshold for arousal, becoming overly excited quickly, especially when stimulated by the environment or interactions with handlers. Training to help him manage his arousal levels and teaching him to remain calm in various situations will be essential for her well-being.
