Sofa

Hello, my name is Sofa. My animal id is #160537. I am a female tabby cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 8 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/14/2022.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Sofa is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and appears to be deteriorating. She started off nervous but was tolerant of gentle attention, but now she displays distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions and does not relax until she is left alone. She will only eat treats when she feels safe. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. Please check here for updated adoption hours. A staff member writes: "Sofa is a young kitty with the roundest head. She started off really nervous in the care center, but was tolerant of gentle attention and petting. Over time, we believe she's become more and more fearful due to the busy shelter environment, and will now hiss and swat to show her discomfort and increase distance from people. We are unsure if she's ever been socialized with humans but we believe she would do better once moved to a calmer environment with only a few caretakers who can be patient with her and help her adjust to her new home. She does well when you sweet talk her, but she isn't comfortable with too much contact or attention right now. If you don't mind helping a cat that really needs it, why don't you come to Manhattan ACC to meet her today?"

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/18/22 Sofa was conflicted. She was sitting at the front of the kennel on the ledge and meowed when I approached, but as soon as I opened the door, she went into the back of the bottom cubby and sat in loaf position. I opened the bottom cubby door, and put some dry treats down near the front of the cubby and after a few seconds, I put my finger out for her to sniff; and she immediately swatted at me, claws in. I removed my hand and just talked to her for a while. I got several slow blinks. I did not try to pet her again. 12/20/22 Sitting upright in the middle of the kennel, watching me with dilated eyes. She leans to focus on my movements and becomes alert when the door opens, hissing when I was slowly placing the catnip sock inside, and then swats at the toy. I spent time coaxing and blinking at her and she grumbles at me, her ears tilted sideways. Seem upset, I did not push the interaction more. 12/22/22 Sitting upright by the front upon approach but quickly ran into the cubby to hide. She hissed when opening the door to interact. However, when still she anxiously looks around and accepted brief pets with the scratcher tool. However, she walked away avoiding contact. Left her soft food close by and she began to eat it with caution. 12/27/22 Lying down inside the covered cubby, but becomes stiff and alert when the door opens. Her ears bend flat against her head and she watches me with dilated eyes. I did not open the door all the way and left a crack, just to blink and sweet talk her. She emits a few soft meows in return, but her posture remains tense. She makes to swat if there's any movement so I just spent time speaking with her. I wanted the interaction to end on a neutral note. 12/28/22 Lying down in loaf position at the front of the top cubby. When spoken to and opening the door, she tilts her ears, steps back, hisses, and lip licks. She sniffs dry and puree treats offered but only accepts them when left alone. When pet on the head and body with the tool, she growls, hisses, and lip licks. Kept interaction short to reduce stress. 12/29/22 Resting by the front of cubby but becomes stiff and alert when the door opens, her ears tilting sideways. She keeps a low gaze and sniffles, but emits a soft meow when coaxed. Did not try to pet or offer treats today, just focused on brief exposure with blinks and sweet talk before ending the interaction so it ends on a positive note. 1/3/22 Resting upon approach but slowly retreats when opening the cubby door. She slowly curls up at the back while accepting pets. Leans in after a few strokes and enjoys chin rubs. However, after a few strokes ears turn to the side and she began to low growl. She ignored offered treats and kept the interaction short to reduce stress. *Enrichment notes continued in GAN*

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent,Bold,Shy

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Kitten socialization

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Sofa has deteriorated behaviorally since her first assessment. In cubby at the back hunched, large pupils, downward face, on approach with treats immediately swats the treat bag and growls/hisses knocking treats everywhere outside the kennel. Sofa tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. She may be under socialized. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
