Pre-Screener Form

Scooby is at risk due to behavioral reasons. During his stay in the care center he has been observed to be fearful. Initially when Scooby first arrived at was noted to growl and show whale eye when approached. Recently Scooby has allowed more handling however, when handlers initiate contact Scooby begins to scramble away from the handler and show displacement behaviors such as sniffing around the room intensely. Scooby then maintains his distance from the handler and remains aloof for the rest of the interaction. Medically Scooby is apparently healthy.

Summary:: 10/21/25: Scooby greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body and soft wagging tail. He then demand barks, once at the other dog.

Summary (6):: 11/3/25- Scooby was at the front of his kennel with a soft body, he is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He walks on a loose leash, doing check ins with handler and is rewarded. He sees another dog down the block and has a mild pull towards them with a neutral body. Handler presents a treat and he follows the handler. When they hold a treat for too long Scooby starts to jump up, handler signals for him to sit. He does and is rewarded. He has no reaction to people passing him and only had a moderate pull towards spots to sniff. He is taken for his assessment where he is placed on a drag leash. He explores the room and is social with handlers. He is leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 10/28/25: Scooby is lying down in kennel, and then stands up with a neutral body as the handler approaches. The handler leashes him and brings him out the kennel with ease. While on the street, Scooby walks ahead of the handler with little to no tension on leash. When he sees other dogs, Scooby stops walking and looks and/or attempts to pull in their direction until they are out of sight. The handler gives him pets and treats. Scooby is then brought to the yard and placed on the drag leash. Scooby then approaches a fence where another dog is present. When the other dog approaches Scooby, they both sniff each other; Scooby play bows, but the other dog walks away. Scooby whines, and as the handler calls him over, he approaches them. He again allows treats and pet. The handler is able to switch leashes. Scooby is allows the leash to be clipped and returns to kennel with ease. 10/22/25: Scooby is reported to be scared of the fan in the hallway. 10/22/25: Scooby is at the back of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with a treat and taken to the street for his walk. Scooby walks with handler and will stop frequently to sniff spots on the street for a long time. Scooby pulls mild to moderately and walks past people without issue, when seeing dogs he pancakes on the floor and stares at them but shows no further reaction and once they pass he stands and continues walking. Scooby accepts treats and walks with handler for a while before being brought back inside. He allows handler to clip his leash before being brought back to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 10/18/25: Scooby is sitting towards the back of his kennel as handler approaches. Handler would present a treat through the bars and Scooby would slowly approach and take with a soft mouth and neutral body. He is then easily leashed, removed from his kennel and taken out for a street walk. Scooby would remain hypervigilant on his walk by occasionally walking in a zig zag pattern with his ears being pinned. Scooby would then also walk on a loose leash ahead of the handler, relieving himself and not reacting towards any passing stimuli. Shortly after, Scooby is then returned to kennel with no further issue. 10/16/25: Scooby is at the back of his kennel as handler approaches and begins low growling once Scooby sees handler. He is offered high value treats and approaches slowly but does not accept any, he is leashed using a pole leash but becomes slightly tangled so a hook is used to remove the leash and reset which Scooby is tolerant of. He is successfully leashed the second time and taken to the street for his walk. Outside Scooby is tense and flinches when hearing a loud noise. He settles over time and relieves himself outside, he passes people on the street without issue and walks with handler pulling mildly and stopping often to sniff spots on the street. After walking for a while he is brought back to kennel and returns without issue, a hook is used to remove his leash and interaction is ended. 10/15/25: Scooby is at the back of the kennel with a tense body and wide eyes. Handler offers him some high value chicken and he takes them gently. The kennel is unlocked and he retreats to the back while low growling with a tense body. Handler makes several attempts to coax him to the front of the kennel to be leashed but he whale eyes the leash and retreats. Handler gets a fishing pole-like leash and leans in slowly to leash him. Scooby is sitting on his kuranda bed and whale eyes the leash as it approaches him. He turns away his head as the leash is placed on. The kennel door is fully open and Scooby steps out and is brought to the back yard. He is slowly transferred to a standard slip lead. His body becomes tense as this is done. Scooby is walked around the pens, he does not take treats or high value. He is walked back to his kennel and returned without issue. 10/15/25: ACS report that Scooby is at the back of the kennel trembling, growling and highly reluctant to exit kennel. When ACS attempt to leash Scooby he is also noted to growl.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Scooby is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Scooby.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Scooby's previous owner states that he will become tense and hovers around toys and food. During his assessment Scooby was obsvered to become tense and move away with the toy. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Scooby's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Scooby's previous owner states that he will jump up on people. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: Scooby has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to growl and show whale eye when approached. It is important to move slowly with Scooby, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Scooby's previous owner states that he will whine when seeing another dog. Scooby will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Other: Scooby's previous owner states that he will flee the house when the door is open.
