Nagini
Hello, my name is Nagini. My animal id is #253318. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 4/29/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormNagini is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Nagini was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: Prior assessment 5/2/26: Nagini cautiously peeked out of the portal, wide-eyed and alert. He curiously sniffed and ate the squeeze-up treats but remained hesitant. When approached with the scratcher tool, he flinched, retreated, growled, and swatted at it. The session ended early to reduce his stress. 5/2/26 FB73 While handlers were sweet talking the neighboring cat, Nagini slowly exited his den, curiously approaching the front of the kennel. When the handler approaches, he steps back into the den. When the handlers gently toss him treats through the kennel bars, he exits the den to eat them. Although he remains tense throughout the interaction, he is able to be coaxed all the way to the front of the kennel with crunchy treats and soft talk. 5/3/26 FB09 Nagini was lying on top of his den, his ears and eyes neutral. He rose to a sitting position and leaned forward when being offered treats, eagerly licking them up. When the handler attempted to pet along his cheek with the click stick, he lightly swatted at the stick and backed away, only coming forward for treats. 5/7/26 He continues to show confidence when offered treats. Engages and eats while he avoids contact retreating watching from a distance. 5/8/26 Vol. Nagini was crouched on top of den with tail tucked around his body. His eyes and ears were neutral, and he returned slow blinks when approached. He watched a feather toy intently and played interactively for several minutes. He came down to front of kennel to eat treats, standing slightly crouched with his tail in the air. Darted away extremely fast to avoid petting with scratcher tool, appearing very startled. 5/20/26 FB73 Nagini is laying curled up on top of his den close to the front door, picking his head up as the handler approaches. When the kennel door is opened, he backs up slightly. He allows the handler to gently toss treats at him, hesitantly sniffing them before beginning to eat them. When petting is attempted with the tool, he leans away and swats at the tool with light pressure. Treats are left in the kennel with him and the interaction is ended. 5/29/26 FB09 Nagini was lying in his litter box with neutral eyes and ears. He quickly approached when offered treats and eagerly licking them up. He flinched back when any contact or petting is attempted, his eyes dilating and his tail lowering. He only proceeded to come forward for treats 6/3/26 FB73 Worked on clicker training with Nagini today! Handler loads the clicker by clicking and giving a treat, repeating this 15 times before working on targeting. The handler holds out a stick and when Nagini touches his nose to the stick, the handler immediately click and treats. This is repeated and after a few times Nagini quickly catches on, quicker to press his nose to the stick with the handler continuing to click and treat each time. Handler repeats this roughly 15 more times.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Calm,Curious,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Nagini was observed resting on top of his den, calmly watching from a distance. He appeared alert with neutral eyes and ears held erect and forward, indicating interest in his surroundings. While he avoided direct contact, he showed interest when treats were offered, slowly leaning forward to eat while remaining cautious and aware of his environment. During attempts to interact using a scratcher tool, he initially sniffed the tool and then gently patted at it. After squeeze-up treat was placed on the tool, he ate from it but remained hesitant and wary throughout the assessment. Overall, Nagini displayed cautious curiosity, showing food motivation while maintaining a reserved demeanor. Nagini is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is stressed in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
