Animal Profile

Spotty

Hello, my name is Spotty . My animal id is #83388. I am a desexed male bronze dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/7/2019.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Spotty is at risk for behavioral reasons. Spotty has displayed fearful behavior while at the care center and has allowed for minimal handling. Spotty would be best suited for placement with a new hope partner that can provide the necessary behavior modification. Medically, Spotty had a condition of the ear which may need further care.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A staff member writes: It's a big scary world out there! Or at least, that's what Spotty tells us at this time. Every now and then we see a curious side to him, especially outdoors where he seems more curious and in tune with his environment. Each day, we take the time to try and figure out a way to get through to our friend Spotty, but at this point, he tells us that he would prefer to leave the shelter environment, into a patient home that can give him the time and space he needs.

My medical notes are...

Weight: 65 lbs

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

Date of intake:: 12/7/2019

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray

Date of assessment:: 12/10/2019

Summary:: Spotty has been very fearful at the care center, reluctant to leave the kennel and avoiding handlers. When a handling assessment is attempted, Spotty freezes, is tense with his tail tucked, lip licks and is whale eyed. Out of concern for the safety of the handlers as well as Spotty's stress level, an assessment is not completed.

Summary:: Follow up on Spotty's behavior dogs should be conducted at a slow pace. He has appeared extremely fearful of other dogs in the care center at this time. 12/8: Attempt was made to remove Spotty from kennel for dog-dog assessment. He was fearful and reluctant to leave the kennel at this time. Further attempt will be made when Spotty has had time to decompress. 12/10: Spotty is introduced to the helper dog off leash. He is fearful and keeps only to himself.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Spotty so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. At the care center, he displays a medium-high level of activity.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 12/12/19: Spotty is easily leashed and leaves the kennel. He is fearful for most of the interaction, trembling with his tail tucked and panting, avoiding handlers and uncomfortable with touch. After several minutes, Spotty approaches and sits next to the handler, sniffing the handler and allowing for gentle touch. He returns to his kennel with no issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Spotty has been very fearful at the care center, allowing for minimal handling since intake. We recommend an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Spotty has been very fearful at the care center, reluctant to leave the kennel and avoiding handlers. When a handling assessment is attempted, Spotty freezes, is tense with his tail tucked, lip licks and is whale eyed. Due to this behavior, we recommend Spotty be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow him to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Spotty to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior he presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges: : Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Spotty has been very fearful at the care center, reluctant to leave the kennel and avoiding handlers. When a handling assessment is attempted, Spotty freezes, is tense with his tail tucked, lip licks and is whale eyed. He will need a slow approach and time to adjust in a new home. See handout on Decompression Period.
