Mr. Wiggles
Hello, my name is Mr. Wiggles. My animal id is #254604. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/16/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormMr Wiggles is at risk due to behavioral reasons. He has been observed to be rope reactive and dog reactive while in care. During his assessment Mr Wiggles was observed to jump up and bite the leash. This behavior has continued to be observed throughout his stay. Mr Wiggles has also been observed to charge at other dogs while on leash. This behavior is difficult to redirect. While in the kennel room, it is reported that he is jumping off the walls in an attempt to get closer to the other dogs. While on street walks, Mr Wiggles is noted to have a soft body and wagging tail. Medically, Mr Wiggles is apparently healthy.

Summary (6):: 5/26/26 (AM walk): Mr Wiggles is at front of kennel with loose body, mildly panting. He sniffs but does not take treats offered through kennel bars, he is easily leashed. He pulls hard out of kennel and immediately starts pulling towards kennels as he passes. He is short-leashed out but begins pushing of walls. Once out of the kennel he is neutral bodied and maintains a moderate pull. He shows no interest in treats but is somewhat social, approaches for petting on his torso and is loose bodied. Mr. Wiggles is brought to office to discuss moving his kennel placement. While in office he is loose bodied while being pet and tries to exuberantly socialize with staff. Mr. Wiggles is walked back to kennel, he re-enters without issue.
Summary (7):: 5/25/26 (midday walk): It is reported that when Mr Wiggles was returned to kennel he lunged at the handlers while they were removing the leash. 5/25/26: It is reported that Mr. Wiggles is jumping off the walls while cage fighting. In the yard, when he sees another dog, Mr Wiggles will charge at them and then begin digging at the fence. This behavior is not easy to redirect, but he is receptive to treats. It was also reported that Mr Wiggly was jumping up and attempting to bite the leash after seeing another dog. 5/24/26: Mr Wiggles is reported to be charging at every dog that he passes in the yard and fixates on them. 5/21/26: Mr. Wiggles is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. The handler brings Wiggles to the yard for playgroup (see dog-dog notes); before the interaction, Wiggles approaches unfamiliar handlers. As one of them attempts to pet him, Wiggles ducks his head, but then he exuberantly jumps on them. After the dog interaction, Wiggles continues to fixate and pull hard towards the other dog with a tense body; the handler pulls him away and brings him inside. The handler clips their leash and walks Wiggles to his kennel; he looks at the dogs in the kennels he passes, but enters his own with ease. 5/20/26: Mr. Wiggles is at the front of the kennel with a soft body and slow wagging tail, he is looking towards the handler with a neutral expression. Wiggles is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the room to the street. The handler puts him in a leash harness and he head whips towards the leash when tension is applied from pulling. Handler continues walking and Mr. Wiggles walks besides them with a loose leash. He stops and sniffs his surroundings as he relieves himself a few times. A member of the public says hi to him and he looks to them with a soft body and wagging tail. Mr. Wiggles is then taken to the assessment office. He is collared with ease and handlers try to put a harness on him. He dodges the handlers as they try to clip the harness and jumps around, attempting to mouth the assessor. He then begins to growl after a few attempts. The handlers stop attempting. He does not take treats or cheese. During the arousal jog portion of the assessment, Mr. Wiggles begins to jump up and leash bite and growl while doing so, the assistant handler quickly leashes Wiggles and the assessment is ended. Handler tries to return him to kennel and he baulks. Handler applies some leash pressure and he bucks and thrashes. Handler then runs wiggles back into kennel, he makes attempts to thrash and buck but he is returned to kennel by muscling him in. 5/19/26: It is observed that Mr Wiggles is not eating his meds. 5/18/26: It was noted on the whiteboard that Mr. Wiggles is leash biting.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Mr. Wiggles so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to rope reactivity, we recommend an adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Handling Sensitivity: Mr Wiggles is observed to head whip when handlers attempt to collar him, when he's on a leash harness, and when handlers initiate contact. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Mr Wiggles to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful: Mr Wiggles has been observed to thrash when going back to kennel. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Mr Wiggles would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Mr Wiggles has been observed to charge towards other dogs when seeing them on leash. While in the kennel room it is reported that he jumps off the wall while cage fighting. Mr Wiggles will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: While in care and during his medical exam, Mr. Wiggles has been observed to jump up and bite the leash. During his assessment Mr Wiggles began jumping up and biting the leash intensely. This behavior was only able to be redirected using pet corrector. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
