Vermilion
Hello, my name is Vermilion . My animal id is #249974. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 3/18/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormVermilion is at risk due to behavioral reasons. While in care Vermilion has been observed to have a low threshold for arousal. Observed to jump up on handlers exuberantly and mouth them. During an adoption interaction, Vermilion began persistently jumping at the potential adopter and then began mouthing their hand. This resulted in broken skin and bleeding. Recently Vermilion has become increasingly kennel reactive. Noted to lunge and snap at the other dogs in the kennel room and in pop up crates. This behavior is not easily redirected. With handlers Vermilion is receptive to treats. Medically, Vermilion is apparently healthy.

Due to the detailed behavior we recommend an experienced adult only home. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy!

Bite history:: On 3/25 at 12:30pm, an adoption counselor was doing an interaction with Vermilion and a potential adopter. Vermilion was jumping during the interaction, the counselor was attempting to pull him away, but he was persistently jumping and began mouthing the potential adopter's hand. Vermilion soon jumped and mouthed the adopter and broke skin on the adopter's left hand, at the bottom of their first finger above the knuckle. The bite was a bite and release that resulted in a small circular superficial cut, and a small amount of blood. The potential adopter washed the cut with soap and water and did not seek medical attention.

Summary (6):: 4/13/26: Vermillion is at the front of the kennel jumping up and down, barking towards the handlers. Handler unlocks the kennel and places the lock on the kennel door. Vermillion snaps towards the lock a few times. Handler leashes Vermillion with a treat lure and he is taken out of the kennel. He is kept on a short leash as he pulls hard out of the kennel room towards the passing pop ups. He pulls to the point where he begins to stand on his hind legs. He approaches pop ups back and forth trying to find opens. He is muscled away and is taken downstairs. Vermillion is brought to the street where he walks with moderate pulling. He keeps stopping to choke as he continues to pull. Handler calls him over and Vermillion approaches exuberantly, bouncing around and bowing towards the handler before jumping forward and nipping the handler's arms. Handler tosses a treat and turns away and Vermillion stops. He walks with the handler back towards the shelter and relieves himself. He pulls hard back inside up the stairs. He continues to pull towards the passing pop-up crates, heavily panting. He pulls hard forward towards a pop up crate outside the kennel room. Handler goes to return him to kennel but his kennel is not ready. Handler exits the room and Vermillion turns around and kennel fights intensely with the passing kennel, growling and barking while snapping towards the bars. He is muscled away out of the room. Vermillion is breathing heavily and handler can see that his tongue is a dark purple. He continues to pull towards the pop-ups as he is brought downstairs again. Handler and Vermillion pace around the driveway. He is neutral bodied and relieves himself. When his kennel is ready he pulls very hard back upstairs, pulls towards the passing pop-up crates and is returned to his kennel without further issue.

He will quiet and sit when treats are presented and is easily leashed using a treat as a lure. He is walked in the yard, where he pulls hard, causing himself to choke. He is very energetic, jumping onto the bench and onto handler at times. He can be refocused with treats and engage in pattern games. He pulls towards other dogs but can be called away with a treat. He barks once towards a small dog. He is easily returned to kennel. 3/26/26: Vermilion is at the front of his kennel with a loose body, barking at the handler. They feed him a treat, leash, and brings him out the room; Vermilion immediately darts towards the dog in the crate outside the room, but the handler quickly pulls him back and continues the walk. The handler brings him to the yard; while walking past an occupied pen, Vermilion pulls towards it with a neutral body, looking at a dog, but the handler pulls him away. In the pen, Vermilion sniffs around, and as the handler sits, he approaches them with a loose body. He walks back and forth and jumps on the handler a few times; he also looks at their hand. The handler gives Vermilion treats, but he shows no interest. the handler then brings Vermilion into a large pen. There, he barks at dogs being walk past. He sniffs around as well. Upon entry, Vermilion alert barks at a familiar handler who looks at him. The handler clips their leash and returns Vermilion to his kennel. 3/20/26: Vermilion is at the front of his kennel with a loose body. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Vermilion walks ahead with mild leash tension; he doesn't react to passersby, and with dogs, he pulls towards them with a loose body. Vermilion looks back at the handler; when the handler speaks to him, he immediately jumps onto them with a loose body. The handler then brings Vermilion inside for his assessment (see notes). Afterwards, the handler returns him to his kennel with ease.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Vermillion so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Vermilions exuberance and lack of impulse control, we recommend a home with no children. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to his on leash reactivity we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: During his assessment Vermilion was observed to frequently jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Poor Impulse Control. Bite History (Human): During an interaction with a potential adopter Vermilion became aroused and mouthed the adoptions councilor assisting with their interaction breaking skin. Please see Bite History for more information. On Leash Reactivity: Vermilion has been observed to lunge and snap towards the dogs in the kennel room and in pop up crates. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. Vermilion will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Low Threshold for Arousal/Mouthiness: During his assessment it was observed that Vermilion would jump exuberantly on handler and would spin and mouth handler when attempting to handle him. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Vermilion to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Vermilion. Please see handouts on Arousal and Mouthiness.
