Waffles
Hello, my name is Waffles. My animal id is #221910. I am a female gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 10 months old.
I came into the shelter as a returns on 5/9/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- owner elderly.
Waffles is at risk due to behavioral concerns in care. She has exhibited signs of kennel stress and deterioration, including breaking the bars of her kennel door. When relocated to a new kennel, she was seen chewing on the metal siding of the door. Waffles recently ripped that panel out of the wall of her kennel. Despite these concerns, Waffles displays a loose, wiggly body and actively participates in training exercises. Medically waffles has recurrent CIRDC.

I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. A volunteer writes: Waffles initially made her way to us when she hopped in someone's car after a night out at the club. Waffles is a gem of a girl, she is social, wiggly, sweet and irresistible. We know immediately she's a girl made to wear pajamas, and her cuddly self looks ready for the best sleepover of your life. Waffles spent time in a foster home and briefly in an adopted home as well, but was returned to the care center. Waffles does not like to spend time around other dogs, which makes the shelter especially stressful. She is trying her best not to let it get her down, and enjoys every minute she can get with her volunteer friends. She shows off her sit and paw. Waffles needs a home without other animals and time to decompress from all the changes in the past few months.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Waffles' bite history, we recommend she be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-pet home/ Recommend no do parks: Due to Waffles reactivity shown while in and out of care, we recommend that she not only be the only pet in the home but also avoid all dog parks as well.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control- In the care center, Waffles is noted to jump up non-stop.The foster noted that Waffles will mount their leg and their friend's leg they will push her off when she does that. Training should focus on teaching Waffles appropriate ways to seek attention through consistent redirection, reinforcing calm behavior, and using basic obedience cues like “sit” or “off” to manage her impulses. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Handling/touch sensitivity: It is noted during the waffles handling assessment that she began to head whip and jump away from the handlers when touched on her neck and back/lower back.Training should involve gradual desensitization to touch in these areas, paired with positive reinforcement, to help her feel more comfortable and reduce defensive reactions. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Waffles Foster noted that on walks, she will growl at other dogs in the street. She noted to friendly with strangers. Training should focus on reducing her reactivity through controlled exposure to other dogs, using counter-conditioning and rewarding calm behavior to improve her focus and response on leash. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Bite history (human)/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Low threshold for arousal: The adoptor was reading on a chair in the living room. They stated that Waffles had free roam in the home and had their bed in the living room. Waffles began to hump them on the chair, so they pushed Waffles off. This is when Waffles began to mouth on their legs. Waffles' teeth scraped on their legs, leaving scrapes and drawing blood. They did not seek medical attention.
