Marmalade
Hello, my name is Marmalade . My animal id is #238867. I am a desexed female orange cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 10/9/2025.
Marmalade is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Marmalade is stunning ginger and white beauty, whose golden eyes tell a story of recent loss and transition. At 7 years old and a petite 8 pounds (though her fluffy coat makes her appear larger), this sweet girl came to the shelter with her two companions, Marsala and Marshmallow, after their owner passed away. For several months, the trio survived thanks to a kind neighbor who made sure they were fed in their empty apartment. Now in the shelter, she's having a tough time adjusting to her new surroundings. You'll often find her tucked away at the back of her kennel, where she seeks comfort in quiet corners. While she's never aggressive, she's currently quite shy, flinching when approached and keeping to herself. She hasn't yet shown interest in treats or playtime, preferring to process her changed circumstances in her own time. Her gorgeous orange coat and white bib are well-maintained despite her challenges, showing her naturally fastidious nature. Like her housemates, she does have some dental issues that will need attention in her new home. This beautiful girl needs a patient, understanding adopter who can give her the time and space to blossom at her own pace. Could you be the one to offer her a safe and loving home? What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them.

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
KNOWN HISTORY:: Marmalade was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/12/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Marmalade is in the back of her den, squinting her eyes closed and scrunching her face as I lift the den cover. She does not show interest in treats. She allows all petting with the scratcher tool. Assessor attempts petting with their hands and she initially flinches when petting is attempted but allows petting on the head, cheeks, and shoulders, remaining tense throughout the duration of the interaction. 10/14/25 Vol Sitting in her den with eyes partially closed. Had no interest in eating Squeeze-ups. Was able to scratch her head with the tool for a few minutes. Not interested in playing with the laser toy or the cat dancer. Had some eye discharge which I indicated on the white board. Never came out of her den. 10/16/25 Resting inside the den slowly retreating when attempting to pet. He allows petting with the scratcher tool through the side portal door but remains immobile in position tolerating attention. Shows no interest for offered treats and ended to help reduce stress. 10/17/25 Vol. In hidey box, paws tucked, eyes closed, neck right by box entry (clear wall in box) Put in treat bowl, no reaction, eyes remained closed. Approached with scratcher tool, she immediately opened her eyes wide and turned face to entry - just far enough back not to touch tool. Approached with squeeze treat on clicker tool - same reaction. Approached with scratcher tool, she went into crouch deeper in the box. Let tool rest, removed and ended interaction. 10/18/25 Vol. In den when approached, door opened and spoken to. Looking forward. I offered squeeze up on scratcher tool. Looked at then ignored. Slowly approached with a scratcher tool. Slowly backing up into a sitting position. End of interaction. Lying down again. 10/21/25 FB47 Marmalade was in the cubby and not responsive, remained hunched and couldn't be interested in treats or catnip. 10/23/25 FB32 Curled up at back of bottom cubby. When opening the door, she retreats to the main kennel area and climbs on top of the shelf. When reaching close to offer treats by hand, she continues to avoid attention and softly hisses. Kept interaction short to reduce stress. 10/24/25 Vol. Crouched in bottom cubby behind privacy paper - eyes scrunched Opened cubby and put in treat bowl - pushing it close to her. She ran out, paused for a second and then ran into top cubby. Open top cubby, approach with scratcher tool - she allows one touch before running out to shelf and back into bottom cubby. Crouched, eyes scrunched 1/2 closed and tail wrapped. Approached with scratcher tool, allowed head scratches but no movement when stopped. Gave scratches and sweet talk. Removed and ended interaction. Eyes flicked open and then closed. *Enrichment Notes continued in GAN*
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Calm,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Marmalade has displayed some fearful behavior during their stay in the care center. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
Recommendations comments:: Marmalade has displayed some fearful behavior during her time at the care center and may be intimidated by young children. No children under 13 years old. Counselor discretion advised.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Marmalade's behavior has been consistently fearful in the shelter since her initial assessment (see Enrichment Notes from 10/12/25 for more details). During the re-evaluation, she was lying down curled up at the back of the bottom cubby with a tense body and wide eyes. She ignores treats offered by hand and retreats to the main kennel area when reaching close to pet. When the assessor pulls their hand away, Marmalade retreats back into the bottom cubby, hisses, and sits up with her tail wrapped tight around her body. When pet on the head, cheeks, and body with the scratcher tool, she lip licks, sinks her head into her shoulders, and remains focused on the tool. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. Marmalade tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. She will likely need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that she go to a home with some cat experience preferred or at least be well counseled in fearful cat behavior. Due to the behavior shown, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
