Animal Profile

Tesla

Hello, my name is Tesla. My animal id is #229333. I am a male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 6/12/2025.

Tesla is on at the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Tesla in care is struggling to acclimate to his kennel environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Tesla has began to display poor kennel presence, lunging and hard barking at his kennel door when approached and is observed to rebound off his kennel walls throughout the day. Medically, Tesla has a heart murmur.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. What my friends at ACC say about me: I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. A volunteer writes: A handsome red dog is sitting in the overflow room in a back kennel. This boy is underweight, his skin too big for his bony body. He is 56 pounds but would probably wear 70 pounds well. He is tall and jowly, a head turner despite his poor condition. His name is Tesla. Tesla was brought to a police precinct in the Bronx after his owner felt she could not care for him. He had lived with 2 adults and 2 children, ages 4 and 9. He is friendly with strangers, but prefers to keep his space from children. He had some doggy friends, but had minimal experience with novel dogs. He had been soft bodied when meeting both male and female dogs at the shelter. He was said to be athletic, independent. He enjoys baths time and water, and is crate trained for up to 10 hours. He loves car rides, playing fetch, and knows a bunch of basic cues. In the yard, Tesla quickly finds himself a lap to prop up on, making the best of his time outside with us.

My medical notes are...

Weight: 58.4 lbs

Tesla’s behavior remains consistent throughout the interactions remains with a loose posture and wagging tail, consistently attempting to solicit attention. Tesla will tolerate being licked on the muzzle through the gate, but when interacting with the final female, whose ears are back, while whining and toe-tapping, Tesla becomes stiff and escalates with a low growl, followed by snarling and lunging at the gate. Both dogs are immediately separated, and the interaction is concluded. 06/16/25 Tesla is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off-leash at the care center. Tesla approaches the gate with a soft frame and a swaying tail. The novel male dog approaches the gate, appearing aloof, sitting right in front of the gate adjacent to Tesla. Summary (4):: 08/30/25 (Trainer Note): Tesla is on the opposite side of his kennel as the handler approaches, but rushes over and jumps on the door upon noticing the handler. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately outside. Tesla stares at dogs, but disengages without prompting. He leans into contact with a soft body. Handler works with him on opting into the 123 game and he does so readily, walking with a loose leash past dogs and orienting towards the handler to begin the sequence. He is returned to kennel without issue. 08/23/25 (Trainer Note): Tesla is jumping repeatedly off of the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls mildly outside. He engages and disengages from dogs without prompting, turning towards the handler. Summary (5):: 08/16/25 (Trainer Note): Tesla is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls mildly outside. When outside Tesla will relieve himself immediately. Tesla and the trainer begin to play some engage/disengage, after several repetitions at level one, tesla was automatically orienting to the handler after seeing dogs on the street. When walking back to the care center, a dog passed Tesla on the sidewalk. Tesla and the handler created space by standing in-between parked cars and Tesla stiffened briefly, but was able to orient back to the handler after a few seconds. Tesla was easily returned back to his kennel. 08/08/25 (Trainer Note): Tesla is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the Live Room. When inside, Tesla is clipped to a drag leash and is free to explore the space. He will approach the handler and sit down to be marked and rewarded with a treat. Tesla is taking treats roughly, so the handler engages Tesla with a couple of rounds of LATTE. Tesla can sit and TAB between enrichment items. The handler then begins the doggie zen protocol with Tesla, After some sniffing and licking, Tesla can leave a closed palm of beef treats to be reinforced with those treats. Tesla is also able to leave an open palm of beef treats. The handler then attempts the doggie zen protocol with a higher value treat (string cheese). Tesla will sniff and lick a closed palm of string cheese, but will quickly learn that leaving it alone will earn him a treat. Tesla is quickly able to leave an open palm of string cheese to earn reinforcement. Tesla leans into affection with the handler, but will look away from them. The handler takes a consent check and Tesla will briefly pull away to shake and then return for more pets. Tesla is easily leashed and will pull strongly back to his kennel. 08/01/2025 (Trainer Note) Tesla is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the Live Room. When inside he is clipped to a drag leash and begins to engage in multiple rounds of LATTE with the handler, orienting to them each time and beginning to automatically sit between items. The handler is filming for a shelter scholars video and then works on the 123 game. Tesla orients to the handler when they say the word three, from close by and across the room. The handler then tales Tesla outside for some E/D and he pulls strongly outside. He immediately relives himself and then has diarrhea (not has been made on the board). Tesla can engage/disengage with multiple dogs when leaving the building and when walking outside, even those on the sidewalk passing around 6ft away. Tesla is returned to his kennel without issue.

Summary (6):: 07/27/25: Tesla is showing on his transfer door cover panel upon the handler’s arrival and will run to the front of his kennel, jumping up on his hind legs and pawing at the glass. He allows the handler to leash him with ease and is then brought out of his kennel. Tesla pulls so hard that he walks on his hind legs only. Once outside, he immediately relieves himself. While on his walk, Tesla fixates on other dogs, attempting to pull in their direction while maintaining a neutral frame. He is taken for an enrichment walk around the neighborhood, and when the session is complete, Tesla is escorted back to the care center and returned to his kennel safely without any issues. 07/24/25 (Trainer Note): Tesla is jumping repeatedly up onto the door as the handler approaches. He follows a treat lure through the leash. Tesla lunges towards the other kennels as they exit the room. He pulls hard to the canine training room. He pulls to the point that his feet are coming off of the ground outside. Once outside, Tesla relaxes some though he maintains his moderate pant and dilated pupils. He is able to play engage/ disengage with dogs from a distance, turning when the handler marks him. He is also able to focus on treats as dogs are walking past at a close distance. Tesla pulls hard back to kennel and attempts to lunge towards other kennels, but is prevented by the handler. 07/14/25 Tesla is is jumping onto his kennel door as the handler approaches. Handler throws a handful of treats onto the snuffle mat and Tesla engages readily. He is better able to engage with the handler following this. Handler begins to ask for a sit and then a breath before throwing the treats on the mat. Tesla engages with interest, continuing to play the game as another handler enters and then exits the room. Handler then transitions him to the 123 game. Tesla is able to follow the handler and turn away from mild distractions by the end of the session. He is easily leashed and pulls mildly back to kennel. 6/24/25: Tesla greeted handler at front of kennel with a neutral frame, standing on all fours. He was leashed with ease and walked to the yard. Tesla appeared highly housetrained as he relieved himself upon exiting the building and had apparently been holding his bladder for some time. Once in the yard, Tesla was clipped to a drag leash. He spent time marking and calmly observed a staff member hosing down the pavement. Tesla seemed to lack strength in his hind legs as he would squat almost to the ground when urinating. Tesla was returned to kennel with ease. Handler tossed a handful of treats over top of kennel. 6/16/25: Tesla was leashed with ease and walked to the yard for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) Tesla had an episode of bloody diarrhea (FS 6-7) and had a small amount of frank blood dripping from rear afterwards. Tesla seemed low energy and was neutral throughout interaction.
