Froyo
Hello, my name is Froyo . My animal id is #243520. I am a female merle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/12/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormFroyo is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Froyo arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon intake, Froyo was noted to be loose bodied, social, and allow all handling. However, Froyo has been showing concerning levels of on-leash reactivity. Froyo has been observed to pull hard toward occupied kennels, and vocalize towards dogs on walks. Additionally, Froyo has been noted to pull-hard, lunge, and vocalize towards people passing by on walks. When in play-yards, Froyo has been social with staff, highly treat motivated for basic commands, and is more easily redirected when showing reactivity. Medically, Froyo is apparently healthy.

Summary (6):: 12/20/25:(PM WALK) Froyo is at the front of the kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. She is easily leashed and turns towards her neighbor. Handler keeps her away and she is walked out to the yard. Handler places her on a drag leash and gives her a toy. She holds it in her mouth and runs around the pen. Handler trades the toy and plays fetch with her for a short while. She would approach the handler and jump on them. Handler will tell Froyo "down" and "sit" which she responds for treats. She takes treats firmly. Dogs and people enter the neighboring pens and she ignores them, looking to the handler for treats. After sometime, Froyo is re-leashed with treats and she is returned to her kennel without issue 12/19/25: For AM walk, Canine Behavior observes Froyo pulling hard towards MOPs, at one point lunging with a tense body. Leash pressure is used to redirect 12/16/25: Froyo is barking at the front of her kennel as handler enters the kennel room. She is soft bodied but barking as handler unlocks the kennel. As handler places the lock on the kennel bars, she jumps up and sniffs in that area. She is easily leashed using a treat as alure. in the hallway, Froyo bounces at the end of the leash and zig zags back and forth. She sits when handler offers her a treat and she sits. She randomly barks over her should towards a sound. She is walked on the street where she remains exuberant, zig zagging and bouncing on the end of her leash. She checks in frequently with handler receiving treats as a reward. She returned to kennel without issue
Summary (7):: 12/14/25: Froyo is laying down in her kennel as handler approaches. She stands up and comes forward to the front with a wiggly body as the handler unlocks the door. She begins hard barking at the handler and is able to be distracted with treats before being leashed. She then pulls hard towards the dogs in kennel on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, she continues to pull hard ahead as she explores around. She would hard bark, lunge and vocalize towards people that were nearby and that were across the street. She is able to be distracted when treats are tossed on the ground for a moment before she starts vocalizing again. She then pulls hard on the way to the behavior room for her assessment. In the room, she has a loose and wiggly body as she would jump up on the handlers. She is comfortable sitting to receive treats and would search around the room for more treats. During the jog, she began to jump up and tries to bite at the handler's leash. The second handler is able to grab the lead and take her away. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. She is then able to be leashed back onto a slip lead and she pulls hard on the way back to her kennel with no issues. 12/14/25: Froyo is reported to pull hard and vocalize towards dogs on walks. 12/12/25 (LATE ENTRY): Froyo is standing at the front of the kennel. She vocalizes with a bark while handler unlocks her kennel. She leash dodges mildly but when called - handler is able to keep her attention and leash her. Handler leads her out of the kennel room. She pulls mildly towards other dogs in kennels - but is able to be led out the room and brought out to the playyard. She does not yet have a martingale collar on, so handler keeps her on a slip lead while in the yard. She relieves herself immediately upon entering the yard. She sniffs her surroundings and begins running around the yard with a loose and wiggly body. Handler will call to her and she will redirect to handler. She jumps up towards handler, but treats are tossed and she redirects. Handler has her sit multiple times for treats - which she catches in her mouth when tossed. Handler is able to have her stay in a sit position for photos. After this she resumes her sniffing and running back and forth in the yard on the leash. Handler then leads her out of the yard and back inside. She pulls mildly when in the hallway, but is able to be muscled into the kennel room. She walks to the end of the kennel room - as her kennel is in the back, stepping over the hose and passing the floor fan that is currently on. She enters her kennel on her own. Her kennel is locked and treats are tossed inside her kennel for her. Interaction is ended

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Froyo so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity and rope reactivity we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: On Leash Reactivity: Froyo was obsvered to react to the other dogs in the kennel room when exiting. While in leash Froyo is obsvered to lunge and vocalize towards other people. Froyo will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Arousal/ Leash Biting: During the assessment Froyo was obsvered to jump up high in an attempt to bite the leash. This behavior was not able to be redirected easily. Froyo is quick to grab the leash in their mouth. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
