Animal Profile

Ship Captain

Hello, my name is Ship Captain. My animal id is #244990. I am a male white cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/5/2026.

Ship Captain is at risk due to medical reasons. He is an approximately 6 month old, very friendly male cat with a grade 5/6 systolic heart murmur. He was in respiratory distress on admission, which was then treated with furosemide. He has been stable since then in the shelter, but will need a cardiac workup (cardiac ultrasound and consult with cardiologist) and continued medications. Currently he is bright, eating well, allows all medical handling, and leans into every head and bum scratch.

A volunteer writes: Ship Captain is a cute and tiny munchkin with eyes bigger than his face which makes him look a little bit like an alien, one of the friendly type....Ship Captain seems always ready for a meet and greet. He is quite upbeat for his condition, cheery too and really enjoys all forms of attention, leaning into pets, head bunting and purring a storm. He is just a babe at six months of age and dreams to live his whole lifetime. Ship Captain was abandoned at a police precinct. He had a hard time to breathe when he was brought to the care center and was found to have a very loud heart murmur(5-6/6) He was in heart failure. Supportive care was started and sweet Ship Captain is for now stable. He needs a full cardiac work up and treatment that can not be provided in a shelter environment. Ship Captain is hoping that his lucky star will bring him safely to his final destination...a loving home. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I am a cat that is in need of a lap! I can't wait to be your new lap cat. My purr motor is always running!

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Shy ,Calm,Sweet,People oriented,Easy going,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: A little shy at the start, but then stays at the front for more petting and cheek rubs by the end of the interaction. Please note that this cat is being treated for a medical condition at the time of evaluation.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 1

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Ship Captain was lying down in the den with a soft body and eyes and gets up when removing the den cover. He sniffs treats offered and steps closer to the front of the den when the assessor raises the den front door. Ship Captain welcomes petting on the head and slightly leans in for cheek rubs. When stroking his body, he raises his hips and tail up. The assessor gently nudges him forward from the rear and he continues to tolerate more attention. During pick up, he is calm and relaxed, rests his front limbs on the assessor's arm, purrs, and allows petting all over when held and hugged for 15 seconds. After placing him back down, he continues to appreciate more petting and cheek rubs. Ship Captain interacts with the assessor, solicits attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is suitable for any level of adopter experience who demonstrates a basic understanding of typical cat behavior and can accommodate his medical needs.
