Jaeger
Hello, my name is Jaeger. My animal id is #238437. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 5 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/10/2025, with the surrender reason stated as other.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormJaeger is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Jaeger arrived at the Care Center as an owner surrender. Upon his arrival, Jaeger was noted to be a bit fearful but allowed handling and was social with staff. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable at the Care Center, Jaeger is becoming increasingly difficult to handle safely when being leashed in and out of kennel. At times, Jaeger has been noted to growl and snap toward staff members when attempting to leash and when returning to kennel. Outside of the kennel, Jaeger is noted to be social with select staff and walk well on leash. Medically, Jaeger is noted to have periodontal disease and have a mass.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary (4):: 10/30/25 (PM): Jaeger is at the center of his kennel as handler approaches. He is tossed treats and accepts them, handler cranes the leash into kennel and is able to leash him while offering more treats. Jaeger exits kennel and walks with handler out to the street for his walk, while outside he pulls mildly into the street and passes people without issue. Jaeger stops occasionally to scent mark and spins on leash at times, Jaeger passes a dog exiting a building and shows no reaction. Even after the dog begins barking and reacting to Jaeger he shows no reaction and keeps walking. After a bit he is brought back inside and treats are tossed to return him, interaction is ended once kennel is secured. 10/30/25: Jaeger is laying down at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins barking and is able to be distracted when treats are tossed inside. He is then leashed with ease and is taken to the yard for a walk. On the walk, he would pull in and out of the play pens and tries to pull back towards the building after relieving himself. He has no interest in treats and would drink rain drops as they dripped off a tent. He is then taken back to his kennel with no issues.
Summary (5):: 10/26/25: Jaeger is at the front of the kennel upon approach, as handler removes the kennel covers he would begin to hard bark, snarl and muzzle punch the door. He is fed a treat, which he is receptive to. He is quickly leashed while being distracted easily and removed from the kennel. Jaeger is then taken out for a street walk, where he would walk along side the handler on a loose leash. He wouldn't react towards any dogs that were also on the street and would remain focused on the handler and walking forward. He would easily relieve himself and pull harder towards spots he was interested in sniffing. Shortly after, Jaeger would spot a MOP and would watch them walk by with a neutral body. He is then returned back to his kennel with no further issues. 10/24/25: Jaeger is at the front of the kennel when handler approaches. Treats are tossed in as handler removes the kennel cover. When the treats are all gone, Jaeger hard barks at handler. More treats are tossed in and spray cheese sprayed on the bars as handler unlocks the door. He is then easily leashed using treats as a lure. Jaeger is walked on the street where he walks ahead of handler, loose leash, sniffing and marking. He will come when called and sit for treats. He pulls hard when returning to the building but is clipped using treats as a distraction and are tossed into kennel. He goes in without issue. 10/22/25: Jaeger is hard-barking as handler approaches kennel. Kennel cover is removed, handler offers treats through kennel door. Jaeger takes treats but resumes hard-barking at handler through kennel door. Handler slowly opens kennel door, uses treat lure to leash, Jaeger briefly leash bites, pulls leash in and releases. Jaeger takes treat offered but begins to immediately hard-bark, growl and bare teeth with handler. A secondary handler approaches kennel, Jaeger takes treats offered but resumes hard-barking at secondary handler. Primary handler attempts to approach and leash again, same result as previous attempt. Both handlers end interaction
Summary (6):: 10/20/25: Jaeger is noted on whiteboard to "Attack the Lock" making it difficult to unlock. 10/19/25: Staff is walking down the room. Jaeger is at the front muzzle punching the kennel while baring teeth and barking. Staff offers him treats and he takes them gently through the kennel bars. Staff says "hi!" in a high pitched tone and Jaeger will bare teeth briefly. Interaction is later ended. 10/16/25: Jaeger is quiet, neutral bodied as handler approaches kennel. Jaeger takes a treat, is easily leashed. Jaeger walks with loose leash, neutral body out of MACC. On sidewalk Jaeger walks somewhat slowly, but steadily, becomes more soft body. Jaeger takes treats gently from handler. On walk Jaeger stops frequently to stop and sniff areas of interest (trees, street posts, etc). Jaeger allows gentle petting with soft neutral frame. Jaeger checks in with handler for verbal cues. Jaeger briefly fixates visually on a LMB when re-entering MACC but loses interest quickly, recovers to walking with loose leash. Upon re-entry to kennel, Jaeger is pre-clipped, and leash is removed without issue. When the handler begins to re-lock the kennel, Jaeger growls, snaps toward the hand of handler, keeps growling baring teeth until handler steps away.
Summary (7):: 10/16/25: ACS reports upon re-entering kennel, Jaeger will turn and snap toward handlers while removing leash. 10/13/25: Staff was offering treats to dogs in the kennels. A treat was given to the neighboring dog and Jaeger begins hard barking and baring teeth at the staff member. A treat is offered to him and he stops and eats the treat. The behavior stops as the handler ends the interaction. 10/12/25: Jaeger is lying down in his kennel as handler approaches. He doesn't stand up until the handler leashes him and he comes out of kennel with ease. He is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he has a loose body and has no reactions to dogs or people as he would sniff around to explore. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he was comfortable approaching the handlers and would sit for treats and allowed petting. Please see behavior assessment notes for details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 10/11/25- Jaeger is laying down at the back of his kennel sleeping with a soft body, handler unlocks his door. He slowly gets up and comes to the front. He is easily leashed and slowly exits his kennel. He is taken to the back yard. He sniffs around and relieves himself. Handler offers him treats, he gently takes it from their hands. Handler presents a collar and Jaeger sniffs it, they slowly are able to collar him. He is placed on a drag leash. He explores around the pen sniffing more and relieving himself. Handler goes to sit on the bench, Jaeger slowly makes his way over to the handler. Handler pats the bench and Jaeger jumps up, one of his back legs miss the bench and he allows handler to pull him his leg. He sits by the handler and he allows them to scratch his head, leg, back and rub their belly. He leans into handler's side and looks around. When he sees a dog walk past his pen, he perks his ears up and watches them walk by. Once out of sight he goes back to looking around the pen. He gently takes treats and handler scratches his neck. Jaeger was easily releashed, when handler patted their thigh Jaeger was hesitant to jump down. He allowed handler to pick him up and place him on the ground. He is easily clipped and returned to his kennel without issue

ENERGY LEVEL:: Jaeger is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Jaeger.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No young Children: Due to Jaeger's need for contact on his own terms and capacity for defensively aggressive behavior, we recommend a home with no young children. Place with a New Hope Partner: Jaeger has shown concerning kennel presence during his stay at the Care Center, at times growling and snapping toward staff when trying to leash/un-leash Jaeger when being moved in and out of kennel. We recommend placement with with an experienced New hope partner.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Jaegers former owners report he will resource guard and hover over toys and valuable resources. We advise against ever removing items from Jaeger's possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression/Kennel Presence: During intake Jaeger was reported to hard bark and lunge at staff in kennel when attempting to adjust his kennel card. Jaeger should never be forced to interact, he should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people he finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Bella. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Jaeger's quality of life. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Kennel Presence: At the Care Center Jaeger has shown concerning kennel presence. At times, Jaeger is been observed to growl and snap towards staff member's hands when unlocking and locking his kennel. This behavior will need to be carefully managed with force-free positive re-enforcement techniques.
