Lennard
Hello, my name is Lennard. My animal id is #245355. I am a desexed male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 4 months 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/10/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormLennard is at risk due to behavioral concerns in a home environment. In care, Lennard has been easy to remove from the kennel, but was noted to become conflicted with handling during his assessment - head whipping, pinned ears, but moves closer by backing into the handler. While in his previous foster homes, Lennard was reported to enjoy enrichment games and was treat-motivated. They did report he did experience separation anxiety, mouthiness/nipping with hard pressure, on one occasion escalated to growling and lunging at a young child, and on another occasion snapping at the foster and a stranger when they had a conversation during a walk. Medically, Lennard recently recovered from CIRDC.

His foster parent writes"Lennard is so sweet and playful. He throws his toys up in the air and catches them. We giggle at his constant snoring and have taught him to play "go find it". He's incredibly curious and loves to stick his adorably large head into everything you are doing." Due to all noted concerns displayed in the home environment, the behavior department recommends Lennard be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. Lennard would benefit from a New Hope placement with experienced handlers who can provide structure, management, and behavior modification, particularly around impulse control.

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray(spent time in foster)
Other Notes:: April 2026: Second foster home - over 8 days before returning to shelter Lennard was reported to growl and lunge at a young child who was petting him. He was noted to jump up frequently for attention. When the foster would stop to talk with someone during a walk, Lennard would occasionally jump up and snap at the foster or the other person. They attempted to give him high-value treats on the ground when he would display this behavior to redirect him, but he would continue to the point where the foster described his behavior as "painful." Separation anxiety was also reported by this foster. 04/15/26: Lennard has been reported to have separation anxiety in his foster home. After 45 minutes in his crate, he will break out. FP is currently training within his threshold. Feb 2026: First foster home - lived with 2 adults (over 1 month) During the beginning of his stay in the home, Lennard was reported to fixate on smaller dogs and pull towards them during walks. Foster would use treats to attempt to redirect him. He was noted to not growl, bark, or bare teeth, he would just stare/fixate. When the foster would leave him alone in the home, he would bark as soon as they left and seemed to have continued barking when the foster got home ~ 15 minutes the first time they left him home alone. He was reported to become mouthy and start nipping the fosters hands and they would have to leave the room for him to stop.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/09/26 Lennard is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He approaches the gate with a slightly tense frame and will sniff briefly before disengaging. He does not return to the gate.
Summary (6):: 6/7/26: Lennard is siting on his bed at the back of his kennel as handler approaches. He comes forward to the front and is able to be leashed with ease. He is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk he has a neutral body frame as he walks ahead and next to the handler. He has no interest in treats and would take hem then spit them out. He would stare at dogs and people that would pass by. He begins to pull on the way back to the building and he tries to pull towards the dogs in kennels with a tense body before entering his kennel with no issues. 05/19/26: Leonard is standing at the front of his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is then brought to the play yard for an enrichment outing. Once inside the yard, a drag leash is placed on him and he begins roaming freely, exploring the environment and relieving himself while maintaining a neutral frame. Leonard participates in a game of fetch as the handler tosses a toy for him to retrieve. He brings the toy back, lays down, and begins chewing on it independently. When the session is complete, Leonard is brought back to his kennel safely without any issues.
Summary (7):: 5/9/26: Lennard is sitting in his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leash with ease and is then taken to the play yard for play group. In the yard, he has a tense body and low tail as he greets the other dog at the gate and begins to raise his hackles. Please see dog notes for more details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 04/29/26(BA note): Lennard stands at the front of his kennel and allows leashing with ease. In the assessment room, he tolerates placement of a collar and drag leash but displays conflicted behaviors head whipping, backing into handlers, pinned ears. He runs without becoming aroused but becomes alert during the knock test, raising his tail into a question mark position. He engages with the toy by grabbing and releasing it, then re-engaging before moving away. See Behavioral Assessment for more details. 2/7/26: A staff member reports that Lennard pulls hard, bunny hops out of kennel and pulls in multiple directions very hard/quickly. 02/05/26: Lennard is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame and allows leashing with ease. He is brought outside for an enrichment walk. While outside, Lennard hard pulls consistently on a loose leash while maintaining a neutral body frame. He explores the environment, including walking through snow and mouthing snow during the walk. Lennard does not display heightened arousal during the walk and is returned to his kennel safely without any issues. 1/24/26: Lennard is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, he is able to be transferred to a drag lead and engages in a snuffle mat full of treats. He is comfortable approaching the handler for treats and would run around the room with a loose and wiggly body. He would engage in a game of fetch with tennis balls. He is comfortable receiving a few pets and is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 01/14/26 ( Assessment Note): Lennard is standing at the front of his kennel and allows the handler to place the loop leash over his head with ease. He is escorted to the assessment room, where a drag leash is placed on him. Lennard initially appears skittish and fearful, displaying head lowered, ears pinned back, and a slightly tucked tail. He accepts treats and approaches handlers on his own time. Lennard allows handling but intermittently looks back during petting, indicating mild discomfort. He runs with the handler without becoming aroused and begins to warm up, displaying a looser body posture. Lenard does not respond to knocking. When presented with a toy, he grabs it, holds it in his mouth, and moves away from the handler. Lennard is returned to his kennel safely without any issues. See Behavioral Assessment for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccomend Lennard be placed in an adult-only home at this time. No cats: Lennard is noted in the foster home to have prey drive, crouch low to the ground, and stalk them. We recommended that he be placed in a home with no small animals. Place with a New Hope partner: Lennard came into the care center as a stray but has spent time in foster. his foster parent writes"Lennard is so sweet and playful.
Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Low threshold for arousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Lennard is noted in the foster home to become mouthy. He will occasionally become hyperfocused on nipping at their hands and we have to leave the room for him to stop. Foster parent mentions his biting is with pressure. His use of pressure indicates poor bite inhibition, and training should focus on impulse control, appropriate outlets for arousal, and teaching disengagement skills. Please see the handout on arousal and Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Separation anxiety: lennard is noted to show separation anxiety in the foster home he is noted to bark and whine and will break out of his crate.When home alone and out of the crate, Lennard has been observed pacing, panting and whining. He will also counter surf.These behaviors indicate significant distress when separated from caregivers and a need for structured alone time training, environmental management, and gradual independence building exercises. Please see the handout on Separation anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration:Lennard will have a prey drive, with small dogs and squirrels in particular. Lennard will crouch low to the ground and stalk them. In foster he is noted when a young child was petting him, he growled and lunged at them. Although he frequently jumps for attention. When stopping to speak with someone on a walk, he occasionally jumps and snaps at the foster parent or the other person. Other: prey drive with small dogs and squirrels.
