Hello, my name is Willow. My animal id is #196729. I am a female black cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.

Willow is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Please check here for updated adoption hours. My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. What my friends at ACC say about me: Willow tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/2/24 Hiding in her privacy den. Attempted to lure her out with Squeeze-up on clicker but she didn’t budge. Tried dry treats and the laser toy but she never came out of the den. 4/4/24 willow was in her den upon approach and backed up when I opened the kennel door to interact. She tolerated some pets from the scratcher tool but kept a tense body during the entire interaction 4/5/24 Deep in hidey box - could barely see part of body. Put squeeze treat bowl by hidey box entry - no reaction or movement. Rested scratcher tool by entry - no reaction or movement. Ended interaction 4/7/24 Willow was in her den. I didn’t hear any hissing/growling. I couldn’t see her, so I lifted the den cover, and she was smushed against the back of the den. 4/12/24 Fearful, slowly retreating from the scratcher tool when attempting to pet with the scratcher tool through the side portal door. Frozen in place. Placed a heart shape felt sprayed with feliway inside the cage to help her acclimate. 4/13/24 In den when approached, spoken to & when door opened. Offered dry treats on scratcher. Left them right near the opening of den & outside of den. She will stick het head close enough to eat them. Then further back inside. Offered squeeze up on scratcher. Ignored but I saw her move a little. Left some squeeze up on edge of den. If step away the cat will eat a tiny bit. Also left tray of squeeze up outside of den. Briefly see her look out of den & back in. 4/15/24 In the den, cowers and pulls back with large pupils, sniffs treats but ignores them, ignored catnip. Dos not want to interact. 4/16/24 She was hiding in her privacy den when I approached the kennel. I tried to lure her out with Squeeze-ups on the clicker tool, but she wasn’t interested, She didn’t respond to the laser toy or the cat-dancer. She never came out of her den. 4/19/24 In hidey box - can see part of body. Put squeeze treat bowl by entry, no movement or reaction. Rested scratcher tool by entrance and then tried to approach - Willow moved away, deeper into box. Ended interaction. 4/20/24 In den box when approached & door opened. Offered & left dry treats just inside of den box. Left dry treats & pieces of chicken just outside of den box door. ate dry treats inside of den. Stepped away slightly. Poked head out with wide eyes, slight glance towards the front of kennel & ate treats & back inside den. Left more treats just outside of den. 4.21.24 Still super fearful, melting into back corner of den when staff tries to interact. 4/24/24 Willow was crouched inside den, facing away from opening. Her body was tense, with tail wrapped tightly around her, and her eyes were wide and dilated. She remained frozen in place throughout interaction, not reacting when offered treats or toys. - Vol.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Skittish,Shy

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization,Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Willow is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, she may attempt to flee and avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if she will respond to socialization, but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Upon approach Willow was sitting up in her den with wide eyes and a tightly tucked tail around her front paws. She tolerated pets on her head and cheeks with the scratch tool, then moved further backward in her den. She scanned the room for an exit and attempted to flee the den, then stopped and stayed frozen for a few seconds before returning to her safe space. Due to high FAS, pick up was not attempted. Willow tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
