Upon intake, Molly hid under the owner's seat and was not interested in treats that were placed in front of her or from staff's hands. While Molly was under the owner, they had their tail tucked in and would lip-lick. Staff approached Molly, and Molly lunged, bark, and growled at staff. Staff attempted again, but Molly continued the same fearful behavior. Staff asked the owner if Molly had acted like this before with strangers, and they stated no, that this was the first time. Canine behavior was called to bring Molly to her kennel.

Date of assessment:: 4/20/2026
Summary:: Molly has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to thrash and seek exit while on leash. Due to the high level of fear, stress, and anxiety Molly is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (6):: 4/30/26: Molly is at the front of her kennel loose and wiggly. She takes treats from hander's hand through the bars. Handler kneels and opens the kennel door, speaking in a soft tone. Molly retreats to the back of the kennel and sits. She is not longer interested in treats tossed in by handler. The leash is presented and Molly fidgets (readjusts her seated positions and licks her lips). Interaction is ceased due to stress levels. 4/22/26: Molly is at the front of the kennel with a tense body, whale eye, and hypersalivating. The handler offers her chicken, Molly licks it but does not further interact. The handler leaves to get Vienna sausages. When they return, the chicken pieces are gone. The handler offers her a piece of sausage. Molly is receptive and takes it with soft mouth. 4/20/26: Molly is at the back of the kennel when the handler approaches. She is tense, showing whale eye and scrambling to stay on top of the drain. She dodges the leash a few times, but the handler is able to get the leash on her. Molly then begins thrashing and defecates on herself. There is no leash pressure on the leash and the handler attempts to coax her forward. The handler is able to guide her out of kennel, Molly begins frantically scrambling forward and she is taken to the yard. While in the yard, Molly frantically paces back and forth seeking exit. She is jumping up onto the walls, and she is pressing her head into the corners of the fence. At the back of the yard, Molly jumps up on a bench and attempts to scale the back fence. She is not receptive to coaxing or treats. The handler is not able to clip her leash due to intensely thrashing when the handler bends towards her. When approaching her kennel, Molly begins to frantically scramble forward. The handler allows her to go into kennel, and they remove the leash using a hook. 04/19/26: Molly is at the center of her kennel sleeping as handler approaches. She wakes up and crawls to the back of her kennel, cowering and trembling slightly. She tolerates leashing with a tense body and needs to be muscled out of kennel, once out of kennel she scurries out to the yard for her walk. Outside she walks forward and sniffs around relieving herself. She sits on a bench near handler and tolerates contact briefly before usually moving away. Molly walks around the perimeter of the yard with handler until she is brought back to kennel. She allows her leash to be clipped and returns to kennel quickly and somewhat frantically.
Summary (7):: 4/18/26: Molly is lying down in the back of the kennel with a tense body and a whale eye. As the kennel is unlocked, Molly retreats to the back of the kennel. She hides her head as the handler reaches in to leash her. The leash is placed over her and she is begins to buck slightly and pull back away from the front. She approaches the front slowly then retreats. Handler tosses a towel over Molly and she is lifted out of the kennel towards the backyard. Molly urinates on the handler as she is carried out to the backyard. Molly is placed on the ground and wanders around the yard. She is whale eyeing and lip licking towards the handler with a lowered body. Molly begins seeking exit in the yard. She is taken out to walk around the perimeter of the yard. She pulls hard towards the back gate and frantically walks back and forth. Handler tries to walk her back inside the building and Molly begins to thrash and buck. She is taken back to the pen and is toweled back into kennel. She is placed in her kennel without issue. 4/17/26 (pm walk): Molly is neutral bodied in her kennel, and begins to retreat to the back when the handler approaches. Molly then begins to seek exit and growl when the handler attempts to leash her. After some attempts to lasso her, the handler gets the leash on her; with gently added leash tension, Molly begins to thrash and vocalize in kennel. The handler opens the kennel door wide for Molly to exit on her own, but she continues to thrash; at this point, the handler removes the leash tension. Then, when they gently and briefly apply leash tension again, Molly thrashes and oclaizes again, and urinating in the process. The handler then quickly adds leash tension and brings her out of her kennel. While in the hallway, Molly thrashes when they're standing still; the handler jogs Molly to the yard, and she stops thrashing to follow them. In the yard, Molly sniffs around; she also tends to seek exit or hide from the handler under yard furniture. She doesn't react to handlers and dogs walking past. Molly also climbs on the bench and stands on her hind legs reach up on the fence. When bringing her back inside, the handler quickly clips the leash. Molly is able to enter her on her own and the handler removes their leash.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Molly's previous owner states that she will snap towards strangers, children, and other dogs. They also state that she will lunge when held/restrained. While in care Molly has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to thrash and seek exit while on leash. It is important to move slowly with Molly, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
