Crouton
Hello, my name is Crouton. My animal id is #247812. I am a desexed male gray cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 2/18/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.
Crouton is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is an under socialized adult cat, not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home/facility as quickly as possible to facilitate socialization in an appropriate and consistent manner. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping an under socialized and fearful adult cat adjust to new environments and strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have lived with cats in my previous home. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
KNOWN HISTORY:: Crouton was brought in with limited information on their behavior history in a home environment. They came from a home with 40+ cats.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/26/26 FB58 Laying in the main area of his cage with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. He jumps up onto the shelf as the cage door is opened and flinches backwards as I place some dry treats down. He is wary of any touch or interaction but appears to be most tolerant of touch/slow scratches on the top of his head. Touch along his cheeks makes him flinch, and any touch along his body seems to make him want to flee. I give him a box hide and leave a catnip Feliway toy for him. Later I can hear him eating the dry treats I had offered. 2/27/26 FB79 At the top of the kennel, Crouton has soft eyes with forward ears and his paws tucked, he leaned in to sniff the treats i gave but didnt take his eyes of me for any movement. He sniffed the tool and when i pet the top of his head and spoke to him softly he was tolerant until the room door opened where his eyes shifted over and dilated. His back fur rippled when i pet down and around his body but he had no further reaction. 3/05/26 FB85 Laying curled up right in litter box, eyes wide, pulls away but tolerates some cheek pets with the scratcher tool. He flinches with pets along her side and she squints. He looks as if she wants to flee and shows no interest in the treats offered during our session. 3/6/26 FB79 At the side of the kennel, Crouton is perched with his paws away, neutral eyes and forward ears. He didnt care for any treats that i slid in front of him and lowered his head when i started to pet the top of his head. Cruella started to lean in when i reached in with my hand and gave chin rubs as well as pets up his head in between his eyes. 3/10/26 FB58 Flinched for pets on the head. He was lying in the back of his kennel with a tense face and body, his eyes wide and he slinks away when petting is attempted along his side.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer. Crouton came from a home with about 40 other cats, it is likely that he was not appropriately socialized to humans.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Crouton is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, he does avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Upon approach, Crouton was in a loaf position on the ledge with a neutral face and eyes, ears were forward. As the kennel door opened, the scratcher was slowly offered. He showed no interest in the scratcher as he remained neutral. He tolerated some head pets with the scratcher, but when pet along his back it rippled. No pick up was attempted at this time. Crouton tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
