Animal Profile

Spinach

Hello, my name is Spinach. My animal id is #72347. I am a desexed male white dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 8/11/2019.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Spinach is at risk for behavior concerns. Although he has shown some improvement and solicits attention from staff, Spinach remains highly fearful in the care center and is hesitant to interact at times. He has also exhibited resource guarding behavior over his food. Due to these observed behaviors, we feel he would be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner who can help manage these behaviors and allow him to acclimate and decompress at his own pace in a stable environment prior to seeking permanent placement. He has been diagnosed with dental disease and a cherry eye that may need follow up care.

However, he would also approach them sporadically with a wagging tail before moving away once more. No direct handling was performed. 8/14: When giving Spinach a high value treat a staff member went to move the tray closer to Spinach. Spinach snapped towards the staff member hand.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Spinach’s overall level of fear, potential for defensive aggression, handling sensitivity and resource guarding, we feel he would be best set up to succeed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Although he has shown some improvement and solicits attention from staff, Spinach remains highly fearful in the care center and is hesitant to interact at times. Force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing or exposing Spinach to new and unfamiliar situations, as well as utilizing guidance from a qualified, professional trainer/behaviorist.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Spinach exhibits resource guarding behavior over his food and treats, where he has been observed to snap toward staff members when they are moved (SEE IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS). Please refer to the handout for Resource guarding. Handling/touch sensitivity | Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Although Spinach has shown significant improvement during his interactions in the care center, he remains highly fearful and hesitant to interact with staff. When soliciting attention, Spinach rapidly escalates to baring teeth, snarling, head whipping and snapping toward handlers with contact or when uncomfortable. It is advised to use a slow approach when interacting or handling Spinach. Spinach should never be forced to interact or approach if he is not comfortable and positive association should be paired with anything he displays fear toward. Please refer to the handouts for Handling/touch sensitivity and Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
