Pretty
Hello, my name is Pretty. My animal id is #212891. I am a female gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 12 years 2 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/1/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.
Pretty is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Pretty has been observed to be having a difficult time settling in kennel. Pretty is often observed to be barking at the transfer door. Pretty is also noticed to be dog reactive. She will pull hard towards dogs while barking. Her previous owner states that she will also lunge towards cats and children. While out with handlers is observed to have a neutral body. Medically Pretty has canine mammary tumors, a mass, and periodontal disease.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I need a home without cats or small animals. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. A volunteer writes: I love this dog!. Not only does she live up to the name Pretty, but she happens to be a lovely sweet little girl. Pretty is all about 2 main things: play and affection. She loves to grab toys and run around with them. And she loves to sit on the bench with me and try to sneak in kisses. What a wonderful character to spend time with. If you are feeling good, Pretty will raise your spirits even higher. What a charmer! Come meet Pretty at Manhattan ACC.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary (7):: 2/2/25: Pretty is lying down in her kennel as handler approaches. She then starts to bark at the door as the handler is unlocking it. She is able to be clipped to the back of her harness with ease and taken downstairs to go outside for a walk. On the walk, she only walked very close to the handler and liked to switch sides in front of the handler. She would stop in front to receive treats and likes to chase after them when the handler would toss them on the ground. She was able to be taken back to her kennel with no issues. 1/29/25: Pretty is observed to be standing on her hind legs, barking and pawing at the transfer door. 1/28/25: Pretty is observed to be barking at her transfer door. 1/20/25: Pretty is at the front of her kennel whining with a neutral body and a wagging tail. She is easily leashed and taken out of the room. The harness is clipped and she is taken to the street. She walks at a steady pace just ahead of the handler, ignoring outside stimuli passing by. She stops and sniffs her surrounds as she walks. She relieves herself and is walked back to the shelter. She spots a dog several feet in front of her and she barks and pulls. Her body tense and her tail is stiff and fast wagging. She is kept away and pulled out of sight of the dog. Her body returns to neutral as she is walked back into the building and returned to kennel without issue. 1/4/25: Pretty has been observed to bark at her transfer door. 12/14/24: Pretty is observed to pass out after coming out of the elevator. 11/28/24: Pretty is observed by staff to hard bark, fixate and lunge towards gizmo while in her crate. Staff had to move gizmos body away from pretty's kennel as he was getting close to the front and pretty kept trying to mouth him through the crate. Gizmo was returned to kennel and Pretty kept barking but eventually settled and went back to her enrichment. 11/19/24: Pretty is lying down in her crate she jumps up when the crate is unlatched with a wiggly body and a wagging tail. She is easily leashed and taken to the street where she walks next to the handler pulling mildly. She relieves herself and continues to walk alongside handler. ENERGY LEVEL:: Pretty is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Pretty.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5),No cats,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no young children. No Cats: Due to lunging and snapping at cats we recommend a home with no cats. No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend no trips to the dog park.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Pretty's previous owner states that she is fearful of loud noises such as storms and fireworks. Her previous owner also states that she will bark and growl when startled. During her medical exam Pretty was observed to growl during tasks. It is important to move slowly with Pretty, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Pretty's previous owner states that she will lunge towards cats, children, and small animals while on leash. Pretty will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
