Crypto
Hello, my name is Crypto. My animal id is #232427. I am a desexed male brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/6/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormCrypto is at risk due to behavioral reasons. He is observed to have poor bite inhibition, be rope reactive, and kennel reactive. During one instance when a handler attempted to place a lock on his kennel. Crypto bit them on the finger with hard pressure, leaving it red and swollen. Crypto has also been observed to snap and bite the leash in and out of kennel. While in the kennel room Crypto is observed to pull hard towards the other dogs. When the handler attempts to keep him away, he will turn towards the handler, jump up snap at their arms and begin leash biting. Crypto is highly treat motivated and may know cues such as sit. Medically, Crypto is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me.

Summary:: 7/22/25- Cypto FKA Vicci and Cho approaches the gate with a neutral body and sniffs at the other dog. He disengages and goes to handler, he engages again maintaining a neutral body.
Summary (5):: 4/21/26 (AM walk): Upon exiting kennel, Crypto was observed to immediately jump upward attempting towards handlers arm, pupils dilated and teeth are heard chattering each time. Handler stiff arms away and Crypto grabs the leash and hold with moderate force, once outside of the kennel room Crypto relinquishes the leash.
Summary (6):: 4/20/26: Crypto was at the front of the kennel, jumping up on the kennel door when the handler approaches. The handler tosses treats, and he is receptive eagerly taking them. The handler leashes him easily with a treat lure. Crypto than begins, jumping up and biting the leash. He is guided out of kennel where he begins to pull hard towards the other dogs in the kennel room. The handler puts him on a short leash and keeps him against the wall. Crypto then jumps up and continues leash biting before continuing to pull towards the other dogs. He is muscled out of the room, and continues to jump up and bite the leash before attempting to dart towards the handler. He attempts to pull hard towards the handlers legs. The handler straight arms him, and he is guided to the yard where he pulls hard and sniffs around. When seeing another dog, he becomes tense and pulls hard towards them. This behavior is not easily redirected. When returning to kennel the handler is able to clip their leash, and he is walked back to kennel on a short leash. 4/19/26: It is reported that Crypto jumped up and bit the handler on the arm, only catching their sweatshirt. The handler took off their sweatshirt, and they were able to continue their walk. It is also reported that Crypto is very frantic while in the yard and the handler had to continuously toss treats. 04/15/26: Crypto is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the street for his walk. Outside he is loose bodied and pulls with mild intensity. Crypto generally ignores people and dogs he sees and accepts treats tossed from handler. Crypto begins checking in on handler and recieves treats whenever he does, he is calm playful while outside and after a bit he is brought back inside. Crypto allows handler to lift and return him to kennel without issue. 4/12/26: (ASSESSMENT WALK) Crypto is at the front of the kennel bowing down with a tense body and slow tail wag. He is leashed with spray cheese sprayed onto the bars. He tries to mouth the leash a few times as the handler attempts to leash him. He is leashed successfully and the handler is able to remove him from the top kennel. He pulls hard out of the room, down the hall and out of the building towards the street. On the street, Crypto walks with moderate pulling. He relieves himself and does not react to people and dogs that pass. He is walked to the assessment office where he jumps up exuberantly on the handler. He is collared with treats and after his assessment is easily lifted and returned to kennel without issue.
Summary (7):: 4/12/26: It is reported that when the handler attempted to place the lock of Crypto's kennel, he bit their finger with hard pressure, leaving it red and swollen. When the handler attempts to leash him Crypto begins snapping at the leash persistently. The handler was not able to leash him and ended the interaction. 04/08/26: It is reported on the whiteboard that Crypto is highly food motivated and knows basic commands such as sit, down and paw. 10/28/25: Crypto FKA Vicci is at the front of his kennel while persistently barking at the handler. He would begin to jump onto the bars when handler goes to leash him, shortly after he would try to mouth the handler's hand as well. Once he is easily leashed, he would be taken to the street for his assessment where he would continue to pull hard and pant. Vicci would not react to any passing stimuli. He is then brought back to the assessment office where he would allow collaring and would continue to throw himself onto the couch in the office. He is then returned back to his kennel with no issues. 4/9/26: It is noted on the whiteboard that Crypto FKA Cho is "treat motivated and may need a toy to leash". 7/24/25: It is reported that Crypto FKA Cho will mouth handlers. 07/24/25: Crypto FKA Cho is loose and wiggly bodied as handler approaches. Cho walks out of make with moderate pulling, wiggly body, pounces in stride intermittently and tries to be exuberantly social with staff passing by. Cho maintains consistent moderate pulling on walk. Cho takes treats from handler, checks in visually with handler for verbal cues. Cho re-enters MACC, is lifted back into kennel with ease and takes treats through kennel door. 7/19/25: Crypto FKA Cho is laying down at the back of kennel his kennel as handler approaches.. He is able to be leashed with ease and is comfortable being carried to go outside for a walk. On the walk, he would walk slowly behind the handler and was comfortable approaching and sitting to receive pets and treats. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he had a loose body and would approach the handers and sit for treats. He was comfortable going on the couch and siting next to the handler for pets. Summary:: Friendly, allowed handling
Date of initial:: 4/9/2026
Summary:: Friendly
ENERGY LEVEL:: Crypto is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to resource guarding and reop reactivity we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Crypto was observed to snap and bite the assess-a-hand when in possestion of a toy. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Crypto mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition: Crypto FKA Vicci and Cho will accept treats with mild to moderate pressure at times. During one instance, when the handler went to clip their lock to their kennel. Crypto bit them on the finger leaving it red and swollen. This is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Crypto's teeth make contact with skin). Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive: Crypto's previous owner states that he is fearful when he is held. During his previous stay, during intake, Crypto's was observed to low growl when initially approached. It is important to always go slow and give Crypto the option to walk away from any social interaction. Crypto should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Crypto's choice to approach a new person or thing. Crypto would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Crypto is observed to be panting heavily during his assessment. If Crypto displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Crypto has been observed to pull hard and jump towards the other dogs in the kennel room. While on leash he is observed to pull hard towards the other dogs with a tense body. This behavior is difficult to redirect. Leash Biting: Crypto has been observed to snap at the leash when handlers go to leash them. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
