Luna
Hello, my name is Luna. My animal id is #219920. I am a desexed female black dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 11 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 6/26/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive to other animals.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormLuna is at risk for behavior reasons. In her recently adoptive home, Luna was involved in an altercation with the resident dog over resources. This instance was over food resources, however she does guard toys from other dogs as well. This incident did break skin and the other dog needed medical attention. In care, Luna was initially highly fearful. With time she is adjusting well and social with staff. Medically, she is apparently healthy.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Luna is at risk for behavior reasons. Luna is a sweet, mellow girl who is most comfortable being close to people-she loves to follow you around and curl up next to or on top of you. Described as social and affectionate, Luna is also a true couch potato who enjoys lounging more than anything. In her previous home, she spent most of her time where people are and was known for her calm, friendly nature. Since coming into care, Luna has been very fearful, but she's beginning to open up with staff and is slowly showing her gentle personality. Luna walks well on a leash with very little pulling. Luna loves car rides and knows several cues, including sit, stay, down, and paw. Her favorite toys are stuffed animals. Due to a history of resource guarding, Luna must be the only dog in the home. She was involved in a bite incident with another resident dog in her previous placement and will need a calm, dog-free environment where she can feel safe and build trust at her own pace. Luna will thrive in a patient, loving home where she can continue to gain confidence and enjoy the companionship she clearly values so much.

Summary (1):: Luna is a social and affectionate dog who is also a true couch potato. She spent most of her time where people are and enjoys following them around, often laying next to or on top of them. Luna has never been groomed or crated but is well-behaved in the home. She walks on a leash with very little pulling and goes on short walks 1–2 times per day, usually lasting 15–20 minutes. Luna loves car rides and knows several cues, including sit, stay, down, and paw. Her previous owner described her as very mellow and friendly towards people. She enjoys playing with stuffed animal toys and eats both wet and dry food, specifically the Royal Canine brand.
Summary (5):: 7/15: Luna had a loose and wiggly body when a familiar staff member approached. She was easily leashed and brought outside to the yard. Once in the yard, she had a loose body and began playing with a soccer and tennis ball and would occasionally come over to the handler for pets on her head. After the session was over, she was leashed and walked back to her kennel with a soft body. 7.10 Luna was at her kennel door with a soft body and wagging her tail when staff approached. As staff was opening the door Luna became excited, she was easily leashed and taken on a walk. During the walk, Luna would get little bursts of excitement and would try to run. Staff was able to control her and not be pulled hard. Otherwise, during the walk, she walked nicely. Staff had no issues with Luna. 7.9 Luna is at the front of her kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. She is easily leashed and taken for a walk. She ignores people and the other dogs in the room. On the walk, Luna has a soft body, with an open mouth. She walks nicely, only pulling a mild amount. She regularly looks back and checks in with staff. Luna is easily returned to her kennel. 07.08 Luna is leashed and brought to the yard. She has a wagging tail and loose body as she grabs a ball and plays fetch with the staff. She runs back and forth around the yard, exploring. Upon return, she goes into her kennel and eats a treat.
Summary (6):: 7.7 Luna is at the front of her kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. She is easily leashed and walked to the yard. She ignores people in the halls and the other dogs in the room. In the yard Luna has a soft body and accepts pets from staff. She finds a large ball that she plays with, chewing on and pawing at. She brings the ball to staff and presses it against them before dropping it. She chases the ball with a loose and exuberant body, before grabbing the ball and bringing it back to staff for them to kick it again. She allows staff to leash her and drops the ball when returning to her kennel. 06.30 Luna is lying on her bed upon approach, shaking with her head down. Handler is able to step inside and leash her, she stands and walks out of the kennel and is brought out to the yard. A drag leash is attached and she paces the yard, standing against the wall and looking out seeking exit. After a while she begins to trot loosely and handler sits on bench and she sits next to them allowing petting. When session is over she attempts to pull towards the parking lot, balking. She begins to walk towards the door with coaxing. 6/29: Luna is shaking in fear on her Kuranda bed. She gives whale eyes and retreats further into the kennel. Once the leash is secured, she does not come forward. She is given a tug until she walks out on her own. She is brought into the yard and kept on leash. She paces anxiously. When exiting the yard, she reverses, pulling back at the end of the leash, refusing to walk back towards the building. Tension is lessened until she is able to be coaxed forward. She repeats this at the door once clipped. She walks into her kennel on her own. 6/28/25: Luna is lying on her bed in her kennel upon arrival. She has tense body language and is shaking. She is reluctant to get up, but comes forward very slowly when treats and sausages are offered. Luna is leashed and brought on a short walk. She maintains a tense posture but accepts pets to her head and looks at staff when they speak to her in soft tones. Luna pulls moderately at times when walking, but remains close to staff. When it is time to return to the Care Center, Luna is very reluctant and begins tugging backward on the leash, pulling hard. Staff is unable to coax her forward towards the building. Another staff member comes out to assist and they walk around the building in through another door, and Luna complies. She goes into her kennel and lies down, still displaying a tense posture. Treats are offered and the kennel is covered to allow Luna time to decompress.
Summary (7):: Previous stay at ACC: 3/13: Luna is easily leashed and walks past barking dogs. Staff member removes her collar as they stand at the door. She is brought to the yard and a martingale with drag leash attached is fitted. She explores on her own. One staff member calls her over and she approaches the other, leaning against her, trembling in fear. She tolerates pets. She approaches the first staff member attempting to engage her in play. Luna gives chase to tennis balls but does not retrieve. She is brought on a relief walk. When returning to the building, she begins to pull back but is easily coaxed along. She returns without issue. 3.12.25 Luna was lying down on her bed when approached, shaking as staff leashed her. Once leashed, she stood up and walked out of the kennel and to the yard. In the yard Luna was put on a drag leash. She wandered the yard and would tolerate pets from staff. She would not take treats from staff directly but would eat them readily once they were tossed to her and on the floor. she loosened up and started approaching staff more readily when staff began to throw tennis balls, which she chased after and played with. She was easily roped and returned to her kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Luna is observed to have a medium energy level in the care center
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to high level of fear, we recommend an adult only home. Single-pet home: Luna was involved in a bite incident over food resources. She bit the other dog leaving bite marks and causing 7 stitches and swelling. Although she has done well around other dogs in the past due to her size and strength, she should be the only dog in the home to avoid another incident. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to a bite incident to another resident dog, we recommend placement with an experienced New Hope Only Rescue Partner.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Anxiety,Strength/leash pulling,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Luna was reported to resource guard food and toys from other dogs. We recommend that Luna be left alone while eating, and that nothing should ever be taken directly out of Luna's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful: Luna is highly fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Luna the option to walk away from any social interaction. Luna should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Luna's choice to approach a new person or thing. Luna would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Fearfulness. Bite history (dog)/Multiple bites at one time: Luna had a bite incident with another resident dog over resources. This incident was over food; however, she will also guard toys from other dogs. Luna bit the other dog leaving multiple bite marks on the neck and 7 stitches. Please see handout on Bite History. Anxiety: Luna is anxious in care. The shelter is a stressful environment, so some anxiety is expected. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. Strength/leash pulling: Luna walks nicely on leash; however, she is very fearful and may attempt to run. Any adopter or foster should be able to manage her strength in these situations. Please see handout Leash Manners.
